Buffalo ranks sixth in the country in possessions per game and will look to speed things up. Kent State rated 65th in the country in possessions per game prior to starting guard Michael Nuga getting injured, but has throttled down to 120th without him. Nuga led the team in made 3-point shots per game. The Golden Flashes must face Buffalo’s defense, which is ranked No. 6 nationally in opponents 3-point shooting, with just two players who make at least 31 percent of their 3-pointers. Nuga also led all scorers the first time these teams met in January with 23 points in Kent State’s 84-81 victory. The teams are equally efficient on...

Identifying the top trap games is admittedly a trap itself. Lopsided matchups are required to create the proper conditions, and there are only so many instances available over the course of a season. What are those conditions? How is a trap game defined? This comes courtesy of Football Outsiders: “Team X has a ‘trap game’ when it plays team Y but it’s looking forward to playing team Z the following week. If team X falls into the trap, they underperform against team Y, possibly losing a game that they would be expected to win easily.” Pro Football Focus offered this definition: “A trap game is defined in a variety of ways, but it essentially boils down to a high-ranked team playing in a game that everyone expects them to win against a far lesser opponent (not necessarily a losing team).” Still not clear? Just roll with us. The following list...
One night last October, 19-year-old, 7-foot James Wiseman, walked alone into a swanky restaurant in Miami’s fashionable South Beach district. He was there for a job interview. At an outdoor table sat the brass of the three-time NBA champion Golden State Warriors: owner Joe Lacob, GM Bob Myers, coach Steve Kerr and head trainer Rick Celebrini. They peppered Wiseman with questions and Wiseman, as unintimidated by the company as he was by the expensive steak on the plate in front of him, calmly answered. Do you like to go to parties, one of them asked. “I don’t go to parties,” he replied. He told them about growing up with a single mom who worked multiple jobs in the projects of Nashville, where he’d sometimes have to finish his homework under the lights of the school bus she drove. At one point, Wiseman turned the interview around...
STILLWATER, Okla. — As freshman star Cade Cunningham soaked in the cheers following Oklahoma State’s win over Oklahoma on Monday night, the home fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena chanted, “One more year!” He’s not coming back — he was introduced with the seniors and is projected by many to be the top pick in this year’s NBA draft. And when the game was on the line, it was easy to see why he’s on his way out. Cunningham scored 13 of his 15 points in the final 10 minutes to help the 17th-ranked Cowboys defeat No. 16 Oklahoma 79-75. Cunningham had 40 points in Saturday’s 94-90 overtime win at Oklahoma. This time, the 6-foot-8 point guard was a decoy much of the night but finished strong. “Cade just takes the pressure off the rest of us,” Oklahoma State guard Bryce Williams said. “He’s got so much pressure on him, but it’s...
(CBS Local)- The Big Ten has been college basketball’s best, and most difficult, conference this season and on Sunday, two of its best teams will meet on CBS. The No. 9 Iowa Hawkeyes make the trip to Columbus to face the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes as the end of the regular season nears. For the Buckeyes, they’re looking to break out of a brief slump suffering close losses against No. 3 Michigan (92-87) and unranked Michigan State (71-67) in their last two outings. Last Sunday’s game against Michigan was the most watched college basketball game of the season with good reason. Buckeyes guard Duane Washington poured in 30 points including five threes. Despite the loss, it’s clear the Buckeyes are one of the country’s, evidenced not only by their No. 4 ranking but also by the metrics. On Friday, the Boilermakers will visit a Penn State squad looking for revenge after an 80-72 defeat in West Lafayette, Ind., in January. The Penn State offense has sputtered in February, scoring more than 68 points twice in their seven games, averaging 64.7 points per game. The Nittany Lions are shooting 31.6 percent from 3-point range in this stretch after making 36.6 percent from distance in their first 13 games, a problem considering Purdue is giving up the fewest points per game on...
No. 1 North Dakota State — the three-time reigning FCS national champion — can join a three-member club with a victory at Southern Illinois on Saturday.   The Bison (2-0) are looking for their 40th straight victory, which would tie the mark set by Washington from 1908 to 1914 and inch the school closer to the legendary record set by Oklahoma from 1953 to 1957.   MORE: Meet the first-year FBS coaches for 2021 What is that record? Can the Bison break it this season? When was the last time North Dakota lost? Sporting News looks at those questions.   What is the Division I winning streak record?   Oklahoma set the NCAA record with 47 straight victories from 1953 to 1957. Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds, also known as PUBG, is expanding into the future. Developer Krafton has unveiled PUBG: New State for iOS and Android, taking the battle royale game into the year 2051 to a place called Troi. Unlike PUBG Mobile, which is was developed by China’s Tencent, this is an all- new experience created by the PUBG Studio team.  With a 30-year time jump, the new map promises futuristic weapons, techniques and vehicles, including a ballistic shield, combat rolls and drones. It also offers a new in-game customization feature, letting you build your own weapons via customization kits — including performance enhancements, fire mode selection and grenade launcher attachments.  The trailer shows pretty much what you’d expect with a PUBG title, like raging gunfights, car chases and cinematic set pieces. The futuristic but grubby environment is quite different from current maps, but PUBG: New State should look...
“PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” is expanding its slate of battle royale titles with a new entry to the franchise. Slated for release on iOS and Android devices in 2021, “PUBG: New State” sets its multiplayer experience in the future and drops players into new 8×8 maps. More importantly, the game is built from the ground up and optimized for mobile players. It takes advantage of more powerful smartphone hardware and introduces graphics that are on par with consoles. It will feature Global Illumination rendering technology to heighten the visual realism as well as provide stable and smooth gameplay, according Krafton. Because it’s set in 2051, players can expect futuristic touches to the combat. Players can drive high-tech vehicles and use fancy drones to apparently scout and attack adversaries. They’ll also find ballistic shields to create their own cover in a pinch. Krafton said players can expect a new in-game customization feature...
Moving Month is winding down as teams wrap up their regular seasons. For more than a few locals it actually means restarting paused basketball campaigns. American has played only six games this winter while George Washington recently returned from a 35-day hiatus. While Georgetown won four of its first six games after a pandemic-mandated three-week break, Virginia Tech, after a 17-day gap, struggled in a loss to Georgia Tech. Maryland has yet to enter the land of limbo that hijacked the school’s football season, while Virginia saw the front end of its annual series with Virginia Tech get wiped off of the slate. Time to cross one’s fingers and knock on wood. Last week, I focused on unbeatens Gonzaga and Baylor’s drive to make history. Tuesday night, the No. 2 Bears trailed by as many as 16 and almost fell for the first time all season at home to Iowa...
A well-timed four-game winning streak has helped the case for Duke basketball to get off the bubble and make the NCAA Tournament. Sometimes all it takes to get on the bubble is a well-timed winning streak. Duke wasn’t even on the page last week but a four-game winning streak that includes triumphs over Virginia and Syracuse has breathed new life into the Blue Devils’ March Madness hopes. Utah State finally came off a COVID pause and got swept by Boise State, which aren’t bad losses since the Broncos are one of the Mountain West’s best teams but still damaging for a resume without much substance on it. A home series with Nevada rates as must-win since a loss in either game could relegate the Aggies’ only path to the dance to winning the Mountain West’s automatic bid in the conference tournament. The momentum that Ole Miss was building came to...

Well, according to Sports Illustrated, the person delivering the post-game meal kept calling, and Hunter finally decided to answer. For the record, being on the phone on the bench is 100% against the rules, and it results in two technical foul shots. If the refs had been paying attention, it could have potentially changed the outcome of the game.   View this post on Instagram   A...

Golden State Warriors’ struggles continued once again tonight as the Dubs lost a close game vs Orlando Magic. This was a winnable game for them, and they were pretty close to it as well. But when the final buzzer sounded, the Dubs ended up being on the losing end. Regardless of the defeat, Steph Curry gave his best vs the Magic. The ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ finished the game with 29 points while playing 37 minutes! One might wonder what went wrong for the Warriors. For the seventh time in his career, Stephen Curry will start in the NBA All-Star Game. At 32, he’s showing no signs of slowing down and it’s realistic he could break the franchise record for All-Star honors (Paul Arizin, 10). The Warriors are banking on Curry doing just that, and playing at an MVP-level to keep the title window open. But for Golden State to be considered a championship contender again, Curry will need All-Star teammates. It’s unlikely any will join Curry at this year’s scaled-down showcase. Draymond Green has been important, but is not putting up All-Star-type numbers; and Andrew Wiggins is having a career renaissance but not yet deserving of quite an honor. So, who will be Curry’s next teammate to make an All-Star game? Here are the possibilities. Green: Though he made three-straight All-Star games from 2015 to 2018, Green isn’t the player who...
(CNN)This week, all eyes have been on Texas. An unprecedented winter storm left 4 million people without power across the state, and put nearly half of all Texans under a boil-water advisory. Initial reports from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which manages the state's power grid, suggested frozen wind turbines were partially to blame. Though ERCOT's report on Sunday said that limited natural gas supplies had also crippled the power grid, many Republican officials seized on frozen wind turbines and solar panels as primary culprits behind the outages. On Tuesday evening, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, told Fox News host Sean Hannity that due to the weather "our wind and our solar got shut down, and they were collectively more than 10% of our power grid and that thrust Texas into a situation where it was lacking power on a statewide basis."Texas GOP Rep. Dan Crenshaw listed "frozen...

The ACC’s top two teams will go at it in Tallahassee on Monday when Florida State plays host to the Virginia Cavaliers, who are looking to pick up their 12th win in their last 13 games. Virginia is known for its slow tempo and strong defense, and that reputation deflects from this team ranking eighth in the country in points scored on a per-possession basis while rating sixth in 3-point shooting percentage and third in fewest turnovers per game. Florida State’s offense has been at its best in ACC play, leading all schools in conference play averaging 79 points and making 40.9 percent of its 3-pointers. Leading scorer M.J Walker is connecting on 44.4 percent of his 3s. The Big South Conference announced its 2021 preseason accolades Thursday with Kennesaw State picked to finish second in the league, while the Owls swept the offensive and defensive player of the year honors. Prior to the fall 2020 season being canceled, Kennesaw State was the preseason favorite for the fourth consecutive year, but as voted by the league’s media and head coaches, the Owls are now picked second in the conference behind Monmouth heading into the spring campaign. There is no room for discussion in the player of year honors however, as linebacker Bryson Armstrong is the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, while running back Isaac Foster is the league’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Foster’s 2019 season was cut short due to injury, but through seven games he was one of the most dynamic running...

Golden State’s announcing duo summed it up perfectly – “why?” Draymond Green took one of the most bizarre shots in recent memory in the closing seconds of the Warriors’ 105-100 loss to the Spurs, a result that may have been different had he not chucked it up. Down 103-100, Golden State had the ball with 8.7 seconds left out of a time out. It’s notable because Warzone performs well for him on YouTube, and he’s also won tournaments. The footage then goes on to showcase a match where he plays against a cheater. While the Sunflower Showdown between Kansas State and Kansas has been one-sided to the Jayhawks throughout history, the gap between these teams is especially large entering Tuesday’s showdown at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence. Kansas has not been the dominant team we are accustomed to seeing, losing four of its past five games and failing to cover the spread in all five. However, each of the Jayhawks’ top five scorers is making over 35 percent of their 3-point shots. Kansas State ranks 325th in the nation in opponent 3-point shooting percentage. The Wildcats also have problems protecting the ball, rating 339th in opponents’ steals per possession, which leads to a lot of...
As region play winds down for the Trion Lady Dogs the team is gearing up for a run into the State Tournament. At the week 11 mark, the Bulldogs are ranked #5 in the state and remain undefeated in region play. The Ladies have two remaining region games: Bowdon Tuesday night and Mt. Zion at home on Friday. Since Trion has the #1 seed in the region, the Lady Dogs are guaranteed a state playoff game, but will have to finish #1 or #2 in the Region tournament to host a home GHSA playoff game. Trion girls will play the region tournament at Armuchee. At the beginning of the season Coach Gentry said his goal was to make a strong playoff run, and so far his ladies are delivering. The team, even while dealing with the challenges of COVID...
Jordan Poole hasn’t yet decided what necessities he’s going to bring with him to the NBA G League bubble near Orlando. He’s just excited about finally getting consistent minutes. “I’m just ready to play 15 games in 25 days,” Poole said Saturday, the day before he heads to Orlando to begin his mandatory quarantine. “So that’s all I needed to hear. A lot of games? I’m straight.” Poole, along with rookie Nico Mannion, will be a part of Golden State’s G League team that will participate in a 15-game season that will take place at the Walt Disney complex under a bubble format and run from Feb. 10 to March 6. It will be the first time Poole has played regular rotation minutes since 2019. Man, does No. 4 Michigan look good! Have you seen the Wolverines play lately? If you didn’t catch their 70-53 win over Purdue last Friday, you’ll have to wait a while. The entire University of Michigan Athletic Department has shut down for 14 days after positive COVID-19 tests, much like No. 3 Villanova had a 27-day intermission. The Wildcats looked rusty returning to action last week and one can only imagine how the Big East’s first place team will fare in the nation’s toughest conference after 14 days away. Georgetown returns after an extended hiatus with a vastly different view (the Hoyas are tied for last place in the Big East), while Maryland had its matchup with Wisconsin moved from this weekend to this Wednesday. Things to watch this week in Pac-12 Conference basketball: GAME OF THE WEEK: Oregon State at Southern California, Thursday. What would have been the marquee game of the week, Oregon at No. 23 UCLA, was postponed due to COVID-19 issues in the Ducks’ program. The other game between the Pac-12’s other Southern California and Oregon teams should be pretty good, too. The Trojans, coming off an eight-point win over Stanford, are 1.5 games behind UCLA for the Pac-12 lead at 6-2. The Beavers have been moving up the standings after winning three straight, including rival Oregon. They also beat USC 58-56 last week despite going scoreless over the final 3:13. LOOKING AHEAD: Arizona State, one of the preseason favorites to win the Pac-12, is looking to get back on track this week against Stanford and Cal. The Sun Devils are coming off consecutive losses to rival Arizona and...

Despite the poverty of Marseille’s game this Wednesday against Lens, ABV, unlike Mandanda, has no complaints about the state of mind of its players. The big bluff? Perhaps… André Villas-Boas appeared rather calm this Wednesday evening on Téléfoot’s antenna, in the wake of the new embarrassing setback of his OM at the Vélodrome – this time in front of Lens (0-1). The Portuguese coach admitted that the victory of the Blood and Gold did not suffer any dispute but did not blame his troops for all that. “In the efforts, we were present. We lacked percussion and we did not know how to create a game, it’s true, but the injuries of Rongier and Gueye (at the end of the first period, note) were a turning point. Pape had five stitches anyway … From there, we lost intensity in the midfield and it was felt in the second...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors are starting to make a habit of fourth-quarter rallies against teams from Los Angeles. Curry scored 26 points on Monday night as the Warriors rallied from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 115-113. “We kept our composure. The second unit was amazing both halves,” Curry said. “We got some momentum in the second half to give us a chance and carry us down the stretch. It was similar to the Clippers game. We’ve done it twice now, but want to get leads early.” Golden State trailed the Clippers by 22 in the third quarter on Jan. 8 before storming back for a 115-105 win. On Monday, the Lakers sprinted out to a 19-point lead in the first quarter and dominated the first 42 minutes. LeBron James’ 3-pointer gave the Lakers a 97-83 advantage early in...
Cade Cunningham has helped turn Oklahoma State into a Big 12 threat. It’s not often that the country’s best freshman ends up somewhere other than Duke, Kentucky, or Kansas, but that was the case this year with Cade Cunningham. The star point guard opted to sign with Oklahoma State and has maintained his commitment to the school even though the program was slapped with a one-year postseason ban, potentially preventing Cunningham from participating in the NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys are appealing the punishment, which could delay the proceedings long enough to get Cunningham into March Madness. That would be a win for all college basketball fans since Cunningham has become one of the nation’s most exciting players to watch on a nightly basis. Cunningham can do it all for the Cowboys, averaging 17.8 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game, 3.8 assists per game and shoots 45.6 percent from the...

Iwiński went on to explain, from his perspective, how the game came to launch with so many bugs on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One that it was often unplayable. One week after the game’s release date, Sony pulled it from the PlayStation Store entirely and offered a refund to anyone who wanted one. Microsoft also offered refunds to aggrieved Xbox players, and CD Projekt Red is facing legal action over claims that it misled investors and players. In the video, Iwiński essentially said the team was too ambitious with the PC edition of the game, which served as the foundation for the console version and proved to be too taxing for eighth-generation hardware. The in-game streaming system was a constant headache for the console team and developers missed a ton of glitches while testing its various versions, according to Iwiński. Alongside the apology video, CD Projekt Red laid...
Sometimes it’s the team that didn’t win it all that we remember most. This year marks the 23rd season since the BCS era began in 1998, a system that eventually gave way to the College Football Playoff, but still left us with several teams more remembered for the fact they didn’t win the national title. Ohio State became the latest team to lose the College Football Playoff championship in Monday’s 52-24 loss to Alabama, but Clemson did not make this list. Ohio State did based on our criteria of picking one team per season that didn’t win it all. Is that debatable? Absolutely given the controversy that surrounded the Buckeyes’ 29-23 loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.  We’re sticking with our choice, and Ohio State joins a list of could-have-been-champions.  MORE: SN Preason Top 25 for 2021 We did the same exercise for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in March. Don’t expect Nick Saban to retire from coaching any time soon after winning his seventh National Championship. Nick Saban had been coaching college football since 1973, where he started off as a graduate assistant at Kent State. He received his first head coaching gig in 1990 with Toledo, before jumping over to Michigan State, LSU and finally Alabama. On Monday, the top-seeded Crimson Tide defeated No. 3 Ohio State in the CFP National Championship Game by the score of 52-24. With this win, Saban passed the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant for most National Championships won by a head coach with seven. And he did so at the same age that Bryant retired. At 69-years-old, many are wondering when it will be time for Saban to ride off into the sunset and retire from the sport he so loves. He mentioned prior to the SEC Championship Game that he would consider...
(CNN)This college football season had a series of stops, starts and ripped-up schedules because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, despite its unevenness, the 2020 season did conclude -- and with a familiar team at the top. For the sixth time under head coach Nick Saban, the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide are national champions, pulling away to defeat No. 3 Ohio State 52-24 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. At 13-0, Alabama ended a dominant season as the nation's only undefeated team. The Crimson Tide also avenged their loss to the Buckeyes in the inaugural College Football Playoff semifinals in the 2014 season.Heading into the fall, the initial outlook for these two teams were quite different. Like throughout the US, the pandemic wasn't handled in the same manner across the college football landscape. The Southeastern Conference didn't waver, opting to play a conference-only schedule for the 2020 season. Ohio State’s loss to Alabama in the CFP National Championship Game proved the Buckeyes were out of their depth. Who bears the most blame? Ohio State hoped to shock the world on Monday night. Instead, they were shocked by Nick Saban’s Alabama. A series of unfortunate eventsThe Buckeyes were going to be underdogs in the title game regardless, but it didn’t help not having several key players on the night. The defensive line was particularly hard hit with starters Tommy Togiai and Tyreke Smith missing the game. The situation didn’t get better with replacement Jerron Cage getting shaken up early in the game. The positive of getting Master Teague back was offset by an injury to Trey Sermon on his first carry of the game. Right guard Wyatt Davis left with a leg injury, setting the offense back even further. Ohio State needed luck to be on their side to...

The Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors went neck to neck tonight as Damion Lee converted a pair of free throws with less than five seconds left on the clock to get Golden State a 106-105 win. However, the most disappointing performance came from the Warriors’ star player, Steph Curry. After giving blockbuster performances last week, this was certainly a setback. Pascal Siakam missed buzzer-beater The last quarter wasn’t pretty for the Warriors. They had a double-digit lead when they entered it, but were hanging on for dear life before Lee came to their rescue. In fact, if Pascal Siakam hadn’t missed his buzzer-beater jumper, the Raptors would have won the game. However, Siakam still finished the night with 25 points and 11 rebounds. And surprisingly, the lead scorer for Golden State was Andrew Wiggins with 17 points, 4 assists, and 4 blocks. Even though six more Dubs finished in...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Damion Lee converted the tying and go-ahead free throws with 3.3 seconds left and the Golden State Warriors withstood a rough fourth quarter to hold off the Toronto Raptors 106-105 on Sunday night despite uncharacteristic struggles by Stephen Curry.
