Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser wears a "D.C. Vote" mask. The United States is the world’s oldest democracy, and yet it’s in dire straits.  Democrats are forced to win a presidential election by 10 points in order to overcome the institutional disadvantages of the Electoral College and avoid potential violence incited by Donald Trump and his modern Republican Party.    The U.S. Senate is a deeply flawed legislative chamber, one in which North Dakota, population 762,062, has as many senators as California, population 39.51 million. In fact, metro Houston, population 7.1 million, is larger than 35 states. Thirty-five! Or put another way, Texas and California have 21% of the nation’s population, and only 4% of its senators. This is inherently disenfranchising to … pretty much everyone.    Small states cling to the Electoral College as a way to protect their interests in a presidential election under the presumption that they would be otherwise ignored in favor...

On the plus side, you still have time to make some smart money moves with retirement savings. On the minus side, saving what you'll need may be a bit more challenging than it was when you were younger. The reason is the power of compound interest, says Elijah Kovar, co-founder of Great Waters Financial in Minneapolis. "You don't need to invest a ton of money if you start in your 20s but if you wait till your 40s, you have to invest so much more to make up for what you didn't invest in your 20s," Kovar said. SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes Covid-19, evolved after several different coronaviruses merged into one, a study has found.  Scientists came to the conclusion while trying to understand the evolutionary history of the coronavirus in a bid to help make a vaccine.  High-resolution images reveal the spike on the surface of SARS-CoV-2 is 97 per cent identical to the spike on the coronavirus it most closely resembles, called RaTG13, which is found in bats. However, the slight differences make SARS-CoV-2 far more stable and 1,000 times better at latching on to a receptor on human cells, called ACE2, a study reveals. ACE2 has been called the 'entry key' to the human body and the mutations on the spike of SARS-CoV-2 make it a perfect fit.  The researchers from the Francis Crick Institute in London say their finding does not help clarify the origin of the virus which has killed more than half...
