After an MVP-caliber season in 2020 and fresh off a massive 14-year contract extension, the new face of baseball started off spring training the right way. Everyone in baseball is trying to get into shape this time of year — even those verbally attacking Angel Hernandez. Cardinals announcers went after the frequently shaky umpire in Sunday’s spring training opener, getting on him for a pitch call that was actually accurate. “And the 1-1 … Ángel Hernández is in midseason form,” Cardinals play-by-play announcer Dan McLaughlin cracked on the ball call. “Let’s not make this game too fast, Angel,” his partner added. Hernandez made the right call. It takes everyone time to get into the swing of things this time of year. Filed under mlb ,  umpires ,  3/1/21

The latest season of “The Ump Show” has returned to a TV screen near you. Angel Hernandez has not seen his shadow, meaning baseball season is right around the corner, and with the spring training schedule officially on Sunday, everyone has some rust to knock off — including controversial, long-tenured MLB ump Hernandez. A questionable strike call at the bottom of the zone during the Cardinals-Nationals matchup led to Cardinals’ announcer Dan McLaughlin letting a good ol’ one timer rip: “Angel Hernandez is in midseason form,” McLaughlin jests. While questionable, Hernandez’s call was (shockingly) seemingly right one, with the pitch just missing the bottom edge of the zone. Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty didn’t seem too pleased with the call, but the frame job by St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina made it look a little better than it was. Nothing unites Baseball Twitter quite like a poor Hernandez call, and that...

The New York Mets have improved a lot this offseason, but they will be even better if they traded for Chicago Cubs third basemen, Kris Bryant. It will not come cheap, but the New York Mets need to break the bank and trade for Kris Bryant. Trade talks may have stalled for the Chicago Cubs third basemen, but that does not mean the Mets need to stop their pursuit of him. New owner Steve Cohen has made it a point to be a big spender, or at least until the GameStop and Reddit combo may have slowed that down for him. Regardless, adding a player of Bryant’s caliber could make the Mets the new NL East favorites. However, payroll factors are coming into play that could influence any potential deal more than prospects or the price to trade for the former MVP. According to SNY, the Mets payroll is nearing $200 million...
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout released its mid-season “3.5” patch today, continuing the winter vibe of season 3. The update brings a live feed for spectators, variants of old courses, and a new winter-inspired course called “Snowball Survival”— just in time for the blizzard that hit the East coast. In Snowball Survival, you run around on the dissolving floor of a giant slime bowl as you try to escape from multiple giant snowballs. As the floor dissolves, it gets harder and harder to dodge giant cotton candy-like snowballs, which send the beans flying. The update also revamps a variety of old stages by introducing over 40 variations to current courses. These changes will switch up the game by adding new hidden traps, so your regular route might not be safe anymore. As far as features go, the new “Fall Feed” will allow you to keep a closer watch...
The greatest challenge for selecting Sporting News’ annual mid-season All-America team was not so much choosing the 15 most deserving players but deciding what, precisely, constitutes the mid-season in 2020-21. Precision is not really what this season is about. MORE: March Madness contenders informed of strict COVID-19 protocols It still is necessary to put the ball inside the rim to earn a field goal, and to place a pass into a catchable position for the player receiving it, but the dependability of a typical season’s schedule is a thing of the past (and, pretty please, the future). Some teams have played half their original (truncated) regular-season schedules. Some have not. Some probably have played half their games whether or not they realize it. So it seems as good a time as any to make and announce our selections. First team All-Americans Luka Garza, Iowa 6-11, 265, Sr., C Key stats:...

Along with some additions like a new Zombies map and new weapons, Treyarch is using the midseason point to add Express, a Black Ops fan-favorite map, to multiplayer. Express is set in a high-tech train station with teams facing off on opposites sides of the station. The map features a luggage area, two wide-open train tracks that are dangerous to cross, and some fantastic choke points for firefights. ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Auburn and Georgia finally have help from their top recruits as the teams try to escape the bottom of the Southeastern Conference standings. Freshman guards Sharife Cooper of Auburn and K.D. Johnson of Georgia proved after being cleared to play by the NCAA they can immediately lead their teams in scoring. Cooper, who boasts dynamic scoring and playmaking skills, gives the Tigers reason to dream big for the 2021-22 season, when they again will be eligible for the postseason. Johnson’s talents as a scorer and defender may not be enough to make up for the shortcomings of his Bulldogs’ teammates. Each guard played lead roles on Wednesday night, when Auburn overwhelmed Georgia 95-77. Playing in only his second game, Cooper had game-high totals of 28 points and 12 assists. “Sharife Cooper was the best player on the floor,” said Auburn coach Bruce Pearl. No...

James Harden has never been known for his defense and he certainly didn’t look interested in flipping the script in his first preseason game. Yesterday’s central protagonist on NBA Twitter was James Harden, looking a little extra thicc. Whether or not he’s actually put on a few pounds in the past few months, or the angle and warmup shirt created the illusion of paunch, the dam broke and a deluge of jokes ensues. Unfortunately, everyone kind of burned themselves out with the food puns and was busy patting themselves on the back when the game actually started. Harden did score 12 points in 21 minutes but he needed 10 shots to do it, added 3 turnovers and looked about as engaged as you’d have expected whenever the ball wasn’t in his hands. And then there was his defense. It’s never been his calling card but in this first preseason...

The NFL was not expected to be immune from the ratings declines that have hit all sports this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and presidential election. Predictably, the Pittsburgh Steelers went unrepresented on the offensive side of the ball, but the organization did place two defenders on the team. Most notably, Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt got the nod as first-team edge rusher (along with Chicago Bears edge rusher Khalil Mack). Watt came out ahead of second-teamer Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns, with Watt having the best PFF pass rushing grade of any rusher. “[Watt] was a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate a season ago and is coming back for another run at that award in 2020,” asserts Monson. SANTA CLARA — Two 49ers defenders are gaining national recognition despite the team’s 4-5, injury-marred start. Linebacker Fred Warner and cornerback Jason Verrett were named to Pro Football Focus’ Midseason All-Pro First Team. Left tackle Trent Williams made PFF’s Second Team. Nicknamed “All-Pro Fred” by teammates as this season has unfolded, Warner is the top graded linebacker in coverage and is allowing 6.2 yards per reception. Seattle Seahawks’ counterpart Bobby Wagner all made PFF’s First Team and look for those two to vie for The Associated Press’ more established All-Pro honors at season’s end. Warner’s coverage ability is especially noteworthy this week. He must slow New Orleans’ Alvin Kamara,, who’s already churned out 1,000 all-purpose yards and also is a PFF Midseason All-Pro. Kamara leads the Saints with 60 receptions on 72 targets for 565 yards (9.4 average) and three touchdowns; he’s run for 471 yards...

When the Washington Football Team fell at the previously-winless New York Giants last month, two turnovers led to both Giant touchdowns. Not to be outdone, the Burgundy and Gold turned the ball over five times in their 23-20 loss last Sunday. The first fumble (Antonio Gibson after a 21-yard catch from Kyle Allen) led to a Giants field goal, while the second (Isaiah Wright after muffing a punt at the Washington 15) resulted in a Giants touchdown. The first interception came in the red zone right before halftime (taking at least three points off of the board), while the other two came in the fourth quarter of a one-possession game. The NFL has reached the midpoint of the 2020 season, but it’s reached that point with far fewer television viewers than it had at this time last year. According to Front Office Sports, “At halftime of the 2020 season, the league is averaging 14.9 million viewers, down 7% from last season.” One of the league’s bright spots was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants game. According to Front Office Sports, with Tom Brady leading them, the Buccaneers racked up a 17 percent jump over last season’s Week 9 game and earned 11.7 million viewers.
