By MARCIA DUNN, AP Aerospace Writer CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA on Monday released the first high-quality video of a spacecraft landing on Mars, a three-minute trailer showing the enormous orange and white parachute hurtling open and the red dust kicking up as rocket engines lowered the rover to the surface. The quality was so good — and the images so breathtaking — that members of the rover team said they felt like they were riding along. “It gives me goosebumps every time I see it, just amazing,” said Dave Gruel, head of the entry and descent camera team. The Perseverance rover landed last Thursday near an ancient river delta in Jezero Crater to search for signs of ancient microscopic life. After spending the weekend binge-watching the descent and landing video, the team at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, shared the video at a news conference. “These videos...
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations announced Tuesday it is releasing $15 million from its emergency relief fund to help Guinea and Congo combat new outbreaks of Ebola. U.N. humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock made the announcement, and U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the funding will help both countries respond to the outbreak and support neighboring countries to prepare. This is the first time that Ebola has been recorded in Guinea since an outbreak that ended in 2016. The West African nation officially declared it had an Ebola epidemic after at least three people died and four others became infected. Neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia have put their citizens on high alert because of the situation in Guinea. The three nations battled the world’s deadliest Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016, which began in Guinea and in which more than 11,300 people died. Dujarric said the outbreak in Congo “is...

There are nine practices that could significantly improve the climate of free speech on American college campuses nationwide. This, according to a report released by Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) Free Speech Center last week, aimed at offering best practices for First Amendment advocacy, activism, and engagement amongst college students. The nine practices proposed were: physical environments incorporating the First Amendment, social media engagement, cultural boundary bridging, writing exercises, case studies, targeted campus events, hands-on engagement, building bridges, and a combination of assessment and iteration. Examples of these practices included establishing monuments enumerating the First Amendment rights, or offering exercises where students experience loss of these rights momentarily by exchanging their First Amendment freedoms for a free lunch. The author of the report, MTSU Associate Vice Provost for Data Analytics and Student Success Dr. Brian Hinote, compiled data from 10 universities across the country...
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The number of Indiana children who died from neglect or abuse totaled 61 in 2019, down four from the previous year, the state Department of Child Services said in a report released Thursday. Eighteen of the deaths were due to abuse and 43 were due to neglect, the department said in its 2019 Annual Report of Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities in Indiana. The report detailed 11 unsafe sleep-related deaths in which a caregiver was determined to have been neglectful. Lack of supervision was cited in 10 death investigations: Caregivers were found responsible in seven drownings, and three children died after they or another child got ahold of an unsecured gun. Marion County had 13 child fatalities caused by abuse or neglect, more than any other county. DCS is legally required to review all child deaths that involve allegations of neglect or abuse and, if the child...
By SUSAN MONTOYA BRYAN, Associated Press ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A man who was tased during a confrontation with a ranger at a national monument in New Mexico was seen climbing on and among petroglyph cliff features off-trail in violation of park regulations, according to the National Park Service. The federal agency released more details and video of the interaction between the ranger and Darrell House late Wednesday, saying an investigation is ongoing. The video shows the ranger telling House that Native American tribes from the area consider Petroglyph National Monument as sacred and that visitors are supposed to stay on designated trails to preserve the cultural resources and allow the desert vegetation to recover. The video also shows House, who identified himself as Navajo and Oneida, giving the ranger a fake name and trying to walk away. Video taken by House showed the ranger asking for his identification. By The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Surveillance video showing an Ohio judge being shot and wounded at a courthouse before the assailant was himself shot and killed has been released by a county prosecutor. The video was made public by Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin following a three-year open records fight for the footage brought by The Associated Press. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled last month the video is a public record that should be released. The court rejected the prosecutor’s arguments that releasing the video could endanger court personnel by revealing details of security protocol. The video shows Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. being shot outside a courthouse in Steubenville in eastern Ohio in August 2017 by Nathaniel Richmond and then Richmond being killed by a probation officer. In the video, which does not have sound, Bruzzese walks toward the courthouse when Richmond approaches from a...

By JONATHAN J. COOPER, Associated Press PHOENIX (AP) — U.S. Sen. Martha McSally made just under $288,000 last year and paid an effective tax rate of 22%, according to tax returns she provided Tuesday to The Associated Press ahead of her only debate against retired astronaut Mark Kelly. McSally, an Arizona Republican, released five years of tax returns and called on Kelly to do the same. She and her GOP allies have relentlessly criticized Kelly's income sources since he retired from NASA in 2011, including paid speeches and a high-altitude balloon business he co-founded that a Chinese company invested in. A barrage of television ads accuses Kelly of being willing to “do anything for a buck.” “He’s not being forthright with voters, who deserve to know what is in his tax returns,” said Caroline Anderegg, a spokeswoman for McSally. "If he has nothing to hide, this shouldn’t be a problem.”...
By BABA AHMED, Associated Press BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Malian authorities have released 180 Islamic extremists from a prison in the capital and flown them to the country's north, an official confirmed late Sunday, fueling speculation that a prominent opposition politician held by jihadists could soon be freed after more than six months in captivity. The militants who abducted Soumaila Cisse back in late March were believed to be seeking a prisoner exchange with the Malian government. Some 70 men were released on Saturday and another 110 on Sunday, according to an official who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. Cisse, a 70-year-old who has run for Mali's presidency three times, was campaigning ahead of legislative elections not far from Timbuktu at the time of his abduction. His bodyguard was killed in the attack, and the only proof of life has been a handwritten...

The book is a split short story anthology entitled MONSTERS. Author Stephen J. Semones, of Bristol, TN and Miller, both contributed six short stories to the project. “We thought it imperative for it to be released for the Halloween season,” Miller said. The audience the book is geared for 18 years old and up, given some of the scenes. “There’s nothing overtly over-the-top, but some stories deal with subject matter that some would consider suited for those over 18,” Miller said. When asked what made him want to write this book he shared, he had a love for horror since the ’80s. “I love the classic slasher flicks. Also, I love to read and write, so I’ve been writing since I was in grade school. A...
On March 11, when the NBA shut down its games in light of several positive Covid-19 tests and kicked off a rapid-fire series of events and news items that would trigger nationwide lockdowns, Denver Nuggets coach Mike Malone had a few words of wisdom for how he planned to spend his time away from the game:  “I’m probably going to drive up to WeldWerks Brewery in Greeley, Colorado, get some Juicy Bits, get on my mountain bike and figure out how we’re going to move forward,” he told the Denver Post and other media outlets at a news conference. Words of wisdom — and words that could have come from just about any Colorado resident with a penchant for local craft beer and getting outdoors. Weldwerks, after all, has become one of the state's most popular breweries over the past few years, based partially on its flagship, Juicy Bits IPA....
