to take a quarterback:

If the New York Giants want in on the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes, they have to be prepared to give the Texans an offer they can’t refuse. Deshaun Watson wants a trade from Houston. The New York Giants need a spark to get their franchise back into contention. "If I was Dave Gettleman of the New York Giants, I would take Daniel Jones, I would take Saquon Barkley and I would take three first-round picks, and I would call Houston." —@danorlovsky7 on Deshaun Watson pic.twitter.com/K5Ud2nCTb5 — Get Up (@GetUpESPN) January 29, 2021 That just seems like madness, even if Watson is a game-changer at quarterback. It doesn’t have to be Barkley, but the team that ultimately brings in Watson will have to make some huge sacrifices to get the quarterback they desire. If New York wants him, they’ll have to show it undeniably since they don’t have the same level...

And according to head coach Bruce Arians, once six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady became available for the first time in his career, it was time for Tampa Bay to push all of their chips in. It’s a continual cat-and-mouse game. These guys are headaches that can do both.” The full talents of Allen and Jackson will be on display Saturday night as their teams square...

New York Giants Hypothetical: What would it take to land Deshaun Watson in a trade? By: Alexander Wilson January 8, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe hypothetical scenario where the New York Giants land star quarterback Deshaun Watson in a trade is quite optimistic and unlikely. However, it is always fun to dabble in the improbable, as Watson represents one of the best passers in the NFL, but is also an incredible athlete. Some might say that Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has similar traits: throwing on the run, utilizing his legs to pick up extra yards, and making throws downfield. The primary difference, Watson, is simply better in every category. However, the Houston Texans have done him zero favors when it comes to maximizing his potential. After they traded away DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals and did little to bolster his protection on the...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Oklahoma will returning to the stadium where the Sooners just won their sixth Big 12 championship in a row to play SEC runner-up Florida in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 30. The only other time Oklahoma and Florida played each other was 12 seasons ago in the BCS title game that the Gators won 24-14 for their last national championship. It will be the first Cotton Bowl for the 10th-ranked Gators (8-3), who are coming of a 52-46 loss to No. 1 Alabama in the SEC championship. The eighth-ranked Sooners (8-2) ended a three-year run of making the College Football Playoff even after winning another Big 12 title with a 27-21 win Saturday over Iowa State at AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. Oklahoma finished sixth in the final CFP rankings released Sunday, one spot ahead of Florida. Oklahoma is in the Cotton...
Is there anyway the Bears can make the jump into the top three conversation? Mitchell Trubisky is not the answer at quarterback for the Chicago Bears. The pick became Carson Wentz, but the plan to move up high enough to get the guy you want worked. That’s what the Bears could do. Chicago should look to swing a trade with either Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, or the Chargers, teams without big enough quarterback questions to justify taking one in the Top 10. Pulling off a trade would probably require pairing the pick with a top-tier player tailored to the receiving team’s specific area of need, but being bold isn’t about doing things the easy way. From there, the best move would be to entice New York or Jacksonville to move back with a package of picks. According to the NFL Draft value chart, depending on which pick they landed in the No....
The Cowboys are never safe from Stephen A. Smith, even when he’s not on the clock. The fiery “First Take” commentator, who has a notable history of dragging America’s (oft-maligned) Team, took advantage of a unique situation Thursday to blindside Dallas with another stinging remark. That opportunity came at The Game Awards, an annual awards ceremony established in 2014 that honors achievements in the video game industry. Smith, asked to present the award for “Best Esports Player,” was effusive in his praise of the genre as it kept going amid the COVID-19 pandemic. That he could use the platform to take a dig at the Cowboys only made it better: MORE: Troy Aikman at loss for words watching Cowboys lose to Ravens It’s hard to disagree with Smith’s take this year, even knowing he never misses an opportunity to call the Cowboys out. If the New York Jets are looking to land Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawerence, they may want to think about finding a new head coach first.  Adam Gase spoke to reporters on Thursday about the team's struggles at quarterback and took full ownership over Sam Darnold’s lackluster performance this season.  RAIDERS’ JON GRUDEN NOT TAKING THE WINLESS JETS LIGHTLY AFTER LAST SEASON’S BLOWOUT LOSS “I came here to help him, to help him develop his career, and we haven’t been able to do that,” Gase said. “That’s why these next [five weeks], every game, is so important to keep trying to help him grow, keep trying to help him develop and see things the way he needs to see them and play the way that I’ve seen him play in certain games.” The Jets are 0-11 but Darnold is 0-7 as starter after missing four games with a shoulder injury. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones used his Tuesday radio appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas to make one thing very clear: “Dak (Prescott) is our quarterback.” Jones called it “crazy” that people are speculating that Dallas could take a QB in the 2021 NFL Draft. Since Prescott’s season-ending ankle injury in Week 5, the Cowboys have relied on a combination of Andy Dalton, Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert at quarterback, and Prescott’s lack of a long-term extension has been noted when people speculate on the Cowboys’ future draft intentions.  At 2-7 and currently owning the draft’s No. 3 selection if the season ended today, Dallas is trending toward a position to take one of the draft’s best QBs not named Trevor Lawrence, but Jones insists that’s not the plan. “Don’t get me wrong, if we earn it, I’ll take it,” Jones said of a high draft pick. “… You...

The 49ers turned down trade multiple offers this offseason for Nick Mullens, believing a good backup quarterback was too valuable to move for a late-round pick. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields have been competing since they were high school stars in Georgia, sharing a quarterback coach. They battled each other until the final minute of last season’s College Football Playoff semifinal. They approached this season as co-favorites for the Heisman Trophy, leading perhaps the country’s two best teams. Then, the Big Ten season was postponed, granting Lawrence an even larger spotlight. Before Ohio State had taken the field, the Clemson quarterback had thrown for 15 touchdowns and just one interception while leading the top-ranked Tigers to a 5-0 start. “Justin was a whole lot upset because they weren’t playing and Clemson was playing,” quarterback coach Ron Veal — who also trains Lawrence — told Yahoo Sports. “[Justin] just felt like I’m sitting here being quiet, and no one is paying attention to me while someone else is going off.” Now, the nation’s attention turns to Fields....
Getty Bills head coach Sean McDermott watches the game from the sidelines. Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott spent six years in Carolina as the Panthers defensive coordinator and although he was coaching on the opposite side of the ball, McDermott said he grew very fond of then Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. The current New England Patriots quarterback spent nine years in Carolina and six with McDermott after he was drafted by the Panthers in 2011. In his press conference on Wednesday, McDermott said he’ll never forget how Newton treated him and his family during those years. “He’s certainly a great player and I think people don’t know who he is off the field and they always wonder,” McDermott said. “Cam and I, our relationship goes back a long time and he is a real joy to be around and a pleasure of a man just in terms...
(WJZ)- It’s hard to find any fault with the Ravens performance through two weeks of the season. At 2-0 with decisive wins over the rival Browns and Houston Texans, John Harbaugh’s group is off to a strong start. But, if there has been one area of concern so far, it’s been the number of hits opposing defenses have gotten on quarterback Lamar Jackson. Through two games, the Ravens have given up six sacks, tied for 5th-most in the league with several other teams. Jackson has been hurried 10 times according to Pro Football Reference’s stats and while he’s largely avoided getting hit on those hurries, he’s been pressured on 26.7% of his dropbacks this season. Left tackle Ronnie Stanley told reporters this week that the line is well aware that needs to change as the season goes on. “It’s never as good as you think, it’s never as bad as...
The New England Patriots revamped their offensive approach to suit the strengths of new quarterback Cam Newton ahead of their 21-11 victory over the Miami Dolphins, head coach Bill Belichick said on Monday. The Patriots called a number of designed quarterback runs and zone reads during their season-opening victory. Belichick said the approach was tailored to “take advantage” of Newton’s abilities as a dynamic dual-threat quarterback. "We always try to do what's best for the team to win," Belichick said Monday, according to NFL.com. "Everything we've done for the last 20 years, and rightfully so, has been for Tom Brady, it was for Tom Brady. Everything was dedicated to him, other than the games that he didn't play in, like when [former Patriots quarterback Matt] Cassel played, or Jimmy [Garoppolo] and then Jacoby [Brissett] when Brady was suspended. So you know there were times when he had to plan differently."...
Sign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York City New York Giants’ first-year head coach Joe Judge wants to see his second-year quarterback, Daniel Jones, get knocked around a little bit. You don’t hear many NFL head coaches say that too often. But on Tuesday night, the former Alabama and Patriots assistant said that he wants to take the red non-contact jersey off the Giants’ field general and have him take a few knocks in preparation for the 2020 season. “With quarterbacks, you want to be calculated in how you start banging them around,” Judge said. “I don’t think we’re going to throw [Jones] in any Royal Rumbles or anything like that. But at some point, we’ll pop his pads a little bit in a controlled environment.” It’s an important aspect of a quarterback’s preparation to take some hits and...
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Kirk Cousins took some significant strides last season as Minnesota’s quarterback, progress that still might need a repeat if the Vikings are going stay in the championship chase. The next step in his development? Literally, taking off. “I wouldn’t say take more chances. Just if we get man coverage and the pocket breaks down, being ready to take off and run and become more of a scrambler,” said Cousins, who has begun his ninth year in the NFL and his third with the Vikings. “If we’re off schedule, get out of the pocket and make a play that’s kind of drawn up in the dirt. That’s just one place to begin, but I think that’s probably the biggest place to focus.” Cousins has never been much of a scrambler, with only 509 yards rushing over five full seasons as a starter. Last year, he...
DJ Uiagalelei, #5,(Photo by Logan Riely/Getty Images) D.J. Uiagalelei will make the transition at quarterback easy for the Clemson Tigers. The New England Patriots had to move on from Tom Brady, the San Francisco 49ers had to move on from Joe Montana, the Clemson Tigers had to move on from DeShaun Watson. Moving on at every position in the game is important but especially at the quarterback position. Teams need to have a capable player take over for the guy before him and put the team in either a better position than they were before or maintain the same standard of excellence that the other quarterback was held to. When you have great talent at the quarterback position, prepping for the successor can either be difficult or smooth. In Clemson’s case, Trevor Lawrence is likely going to be a top pick if not the No.1 pick in the 2021 NFL...
