CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. (CBS) — Camden County health officials are seeing rising cases of the coronavirus and it’s something they attribute to the Labor Day holiday. On Sunday, 56 new cases were reported — the most reported in a single day since July. “Over the last six months we’ve constantly seen cases increase following holidays. This should make clear that we cannot afford to take days off for COVID-19,” Camden County Freeholder Jonathan Young said. “It doesn’t take a day off and neither should we.” Officials also urged parents to keep their children home from school if they are not feeling well and to cooperate with contact tracers if they are contacted.

By Vishwadha Chander (Reuters) - Reopening college and university campuses for in-person instruction during late summer this year could be associated with more than 3,000 additional cases of COVID-19 per day in the United States in recent weeks, according to a new study. The findings call into question the practicality of face-to-face classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, and are important as colleges and universities plan their spring 2020 semesters, said researchers from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Indiana University, the University of Washington and Davidson College. The findings are yet to be peer reviewed and have not yet been published online. To track COVID-19 cases and study their association with students attending classes at college campuses, the team...
During a somber September 22 press conference about the continuing impact of COVID-19 in Colorado, Governor Jared Polis cited data showing a significant rise in cases, led by infections among college students but including every other demographic. He also referenced national projections showing that Colorado is currently among the top ten states for virus transmission — data he called "alarming." According to Polis, the current figures are similar to "the warning sign in July," when a spike in cases followed the Independence Day weekend. "We were able to correct course then," he added. "Generally, what we're doing is working. We just need to do it a little better." The gathering began with a moment of silence to acknowledge the U.S....

The United States skyrocketed back in July and looks like it’s now turning upward for a third time. The UK is going up, and so was Switzerland until a week ago, when it suddenly slammed the brakes on. Even Germany is rising a bit. I’m not quite sure what conclusion to draw from this, but it sure looks as if even a modest re-opening quickly causes cases to boil over. On the...

A little over six months into the COVID-19 crisis, nearly all of Colorado has been touched by the novel coronavirus. Indeed, most people in the state now know someone who's contracted the disease, and with good reason: According to new data, in 21 Colorado counties, more than one out of every 100 residents has tested positive. The statistics, updated yesterday, September 21, are drawn from the Colorado COVID-19 page maintained by the New York Times, and they vividly illustrate how often we're likely to share a space with someone who's survived an infection or may be about to experience one. Leading the list of Colorado's 64 counties is Logan County, which has logged 834 cases, breaking down to one out...

Why do children appear to fight off COVID-19 more effectively than adults? A new study published Tuesday on the immune response by children and adults to COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, has important implications for vaccines and drugs being developed to curb the novel coronavirus, according to the researchers. The study in Science Translational Medicine, an online journal that publishes research at the intersection of science, engineering and medicine, was conducted by scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, and Yale University. “Our findings suggest that children with COVID-19 do better than adults because their stronger innate immunity protects them,” co-senior author Betsy Herold, chief of infectious diseases and vice chair for...

(CNN)One of the things that's getting in the way of clear and consistent messaging when it comes to Covid-19 in the US is the country's current divided state, Dr. Anthony Fauci said. "We are in such a divisive state in society that it tends to get politicized," the country's leading infectious disease expert said Monday night on "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.""It's almost the one side versus the other," Fauci said. The US is now months-deep into navigating the Covid-19 pandemic and several safety measures remain points of contention -- including face masks. Thousands of people may have been exposed to COVID-19 on airplanes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Agency officials believe nearly 11,000 people may have been exposed to one of the 1,600 known cases of people flying while contagious with the virus — despite being unable to confirm a single case of viral transmission on a US plane. “An absence of cases identified or reported is not evidence that there were no cases,” CDC spokeswoman Caitlin Shockey told the Washington Post, which first reported the stats. “CDC is not able to definitively determine that potential cases were associated (or not) with exposure in the air cabin or through air travel given the numerous opportunities for potential...

A child-care facility is at the heart of a recent uptick in Sonoma County’s coronavirus case counts, giving some county officials pause as elementary schools prepare to reopen. County health officials have traced an outbreak of at least 30 cases to one student at a child-care center in Sonoma’s north county. The facility closed for a two-week quarantine after at least 16 students, 11 relatives and three staff members tested positive for the coronavirus, county health officer Dr. Sundari Mase said. “I don’t think it’s surprising, but it is something that gives us a little pause when we think about going back to reopening schools,” Mase said at a virtual briefing last week. MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — We’re learning about some of the early COVID-19 cases happening in schools and how schools are responding to them. The Minnesota Department of Health said Monday that there have been 351 schools in the state that have had at least one COVID case. Schools follow guidance from state health officials on what mode of learning they should follow based on the number of cases in their surrounding county. But as Kate Raddatz explains, how a school responds to a COVID-19 case can be made on a case-by-case basis. At Southwest Christian High School in Chaska, three students tested positive for COVID-19. But school is going on as usual for most of its four hundred and seventeen students....

Over the summer, there has been a sustained campaign from Boris Johnson’s government to return to life as normal. Brits have been urged to head back to their favorite pubs and restaurants for government-subsidized meals, and office workers have been told to return to mingle with their colleagues and revitalize the economy by buying sandwiches. On Monday morning, that all came to a juddering halt. In a grave televised address from Prof. Chris Whitty, England’s chief medical...

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho school districts vary widely when it comes to letting the public know about coronavirus cases in classrooms. An investigation by the Idaho Statesman reveals that school districts across southwestern Idaho have wide-ranging levels of transparency when it comes to the number of COVID-19 cases in local schools. Some notify the public of each case in each school, while others only provide that information at the district level. Others don't track coronavirus cases at all, instead relying on the local health department to do it. The Boise-area newspaper sent public record requests to districts across the Treasure Valley asking for the number of COVID-19 cases and related quarantines in each school. PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona health officials on Monday reported 233 new coronavirus cases and two additional deaths, increasing the statewide totals to 214,251 cases and 5,478 known deaths. The lower count may partly be due to hospitals sometimes lagging in reporting on the weekends. According to Johns Hopkins University data analyzed by The Associated Press, the seven-day rolling average of daily new COVID-19 cases in Arizona rose over the past two weeks — going from 575 new cases on Sept. 4 to 774 on Friday. The increase in the average followed the state Department of Health Service’s recent changing of its case-counting methodology to adopt an updated national standard that newly includes “probable” results from less-accurate antigen testing. By Pedro Fonseca RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A new study that analyzed the coronavirus outbreak in Brazil has found a link between the spread of the virus and past outbreaks of dengue fever that suggests exposure to the mosquito-transmitted illness may provide some level of immunity against COVID-19. The not yet published study led by Miguel Nicolelis, a professor at Duke University, and shared exclusively with Reuters, compared the geographic distribution of coronavirus cases with the spread of dengue in 2019 and 2020. Places with lower coronavirus infection rates and slower case growth were locations that had suffered intense dengue outbreaks this year or last, Nicolelis found. "This striking finding raises the intriguing possibility of an immunological cross-reactivity between...
