It was only a matter of waiting it out those mandatory five years to be eligible for the induction. Magic Johnson was looking forward to a speech from Kobe Bryant The event was set to take place in August last year. But the COVID-19 pandemic led to its delay, and it is now scheduled to take place this year in May. A father and daughter were found electrocuted to death early Monday morning at the site of a downed power line near their Panorama City home, officials reported. The two were apparently investigating a power outage caused by the downed equipment in the 14700 block of Tupper Street, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange. Fire officials responded around 2:45 a.m. to a call from a family member, Prange said. Because of the risk of electrocution, the caller was instructed not to intervene or try to prevent further injuries, he said. When firefighters arrived, the 20-year-old woman and 53-year-old man were dead, Prange said. It was wet outside when the pair were found, but weather conditions have not been linked to the incident, he added. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power shut off the power after being notified of the incident by fire...

Getty Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. When LeBron James was still playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference, he played in four straight NBA Finals’ against the Golden State Warriors. His team was able to win one of the four. At the center of the Warriors dynasty was Steph Curry, who quickly became one of the most prolific shooters in league history. Curry has played a large role in why LeBron hasn’t won more championships. If it wasn’t for the former, the latter may have already caught up to Michael Jordan’s six championship wins. Despite that, the two superstars appear to get along just fine. However, veteran sports insider Bill Simmons is claiming that LeBron actually isn’t very fond of Curry. “Steph is the most lovable superstar maybe ever. No one gets mad at Steph, no one dislikes Steph,” MacMullan said on The Bill Simmons...

California has been a stage for celebrated works of fiction, its lyrical landscapes the proscenium and often the star. And the state’s urban rivals, Los Angeles and San Francisco, elbow each other for attention, whether you take your words hard-boiled or gussied up with literary lather. Paging through books where California is the context writ large or small, a few truly great volumes deserve to be considered part of a canon of our golden state. Let’s try to see if we can boil down this canon to a dozen works, beginning with a wrenching drama. (Note: no definitive spoilers here, just a dipperful of flavor.) She had two tables left to serve Saturday afternoon when city workers showed up, she said, and shut off her gas. It’s the latest in a string of enforcement efforts officials have lodged against Restauration and Tanner personally in recent weeks, she said, including nine citations and misdemeanor charges. Still, Tanner refuses to close her doors. “I’ve seen the damage this does to people when they lose their livelihood,” she said. “I refuse to participate in that.” So, she dusted off some stove tops and a countertop fryer in her storage, bought an electric water heater from Home Depot and worked with her chef to revise her menu. French fries and steak are off the table. Pancakes take up too much space to make, she said, but she does...

California is conducting an immense sociological experiment, testing whether reducing prison time for criminal acts will, in the long run, mean less crime. Over the last decade, politicians and voters have lowered penalties for dozens of serious and minor crimes, reduced state prison populations by about 40% and adopted multiple programs to treat underlying conditions, such as drug use and lack of education, to deter offenders from committing new crimes. It’s been a dramatic turnaround from previous decades, when the public demanded ever-tougher sentences and the state couldn’t build prisons fast enough to handle a tidal wave of new inmates, resulting in overcrowding so severe that federal judges intervened. The change coincided with California’s equally dramatic political reorientation. From the late 1970s to the early 1990s, a fear of crime, particularly violent crime, dominated the state’s political atmosphere, symbolized by the “three strikes and you’re out” law aimed at putting...
Sara and Juan Saravia had three pandemic strikes against them. They are elderly, Latino and live with a daughter who works in a hospital where some of the sickest patients in the region are being cared for. But on Saturday, that last liability became an advantage. Because of their daughter’s work as a housekeeper at Keck Hospital of USC, 81-year-old Sara and 83-year-old Juan were able to get their COVID vaccines. “Now I don’t have to worry as much,” said Sara, who proudly wore a red sticker that read, “I got my shot!” The couple were among about 300 people vaccinated Saturday at USC’s health sciences campus. The inclusion of elderly relatives of hospital housekeepers, cafeteria and warehouse workers came amid a chaotic push across the county and state to quickly get the vaccine to at-risk groups to stem the relentless rise of COVID infections. Freehling graduated from the University of Miami and then tinkered in different jobs, trying his hand at furniture manufacturing with his father and public relations. He also filled nonrabbinical leadership roles at two local temples. As the civil rights movement roiled the world around him, Freehling decided the best way to get involved was to become a rabbi in the progressive Reform practice, “dedicated to radical freedom,” as Jacobs put it. Patricia Reber walked out of the vaccine clinic at L.A.’s Lincoln Park pumping her arms overhead like a champion. A friend told the 80-year-old she had waited four hours for a shot at Dodger Stadium, but Reber was in and out within 30 minutes. “This was wonderful,” Reber said from beneath a Kobe Bryant face mask. “I think they’ve done the best they can with the lack of federal help.” But in the chaotic rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, the triumphs were matched by heartbreaking disappointments and confusion as older residents struggled with appointment websites that crashed because of huge demand while workers waited for official information that never came. Aria Shafiee, 53, was almost in tears because her attempt to enter the vaccination site at Crenshaw Christian Center in South L.A. had been flatly denied. Shafiee knew she was younger than the 65-year minimum for vaccination under California’s rules...

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- President Joe Biden moved swiftly within his first hours in office to sign several executive orders, reversing many policies of the Trump administration. With a stroke of his pen, he signed a flurry of executive orders, including rolling back the so-called "Muslim Ban" enacted by the previous administration."It's a relief. The case was filed on Jan. 19 by the Wine Country Coalition for Safe Reopening, according to KTLA, and names California Public Health Department director Tomas Aragon as well as the governor. It alleges that Gov. Newsom and the public health department have not provided scientific evidence that shows outdoor dining is more dangerous than permitted activities like shopping at an indoor mall or working on a film set.
