New England:

The Patriots’ defense deserved a victory over Denver on Sunday, but the Patriots’ offense didn’t “do its job” at all in a shocking 18-12 home loss to the Broncos in Week 6. Now New England (2-3) has the same record as Denver and is well out of AFC playoff contention after blowing a chance to gain ground on first-place Buffalo (4-1) in the AFC East before the Bills play the Chiefs on Monday night. Really, the Patriots shouldn’t have had a chance to win Sunday’s game on their final drive with Cam Newton. That opportunity came about only because of two head-scratching interceptions late by his young Broncos quarterback counterpart, Drew Lock. MORE: Cam Newton finally recovers a fumble vs. the...

BOSTON (AP) – Enrollment declines at many New England colleges during the pandemic are putting further pressure on financially struggling institutions. The number of full-time graduate and undergraduate students plummeted by more than 20% this September compared with the previous year at more than two dozen colleges and universities across the region, according to the New England Commission of Higher Education, the regional accrediting agency. The pandemic has hit community colleges and many of the students they serve particularly hard, the Boston Globe reports. Many students are opting out because of remote learning or difficulty paying tuition because of job losses, and that will accelerate difficulties at institutions that were already struggling, the newspaper reported. Another 50 colleges saw enrollments drop...

LONDON (Reuters) - Tougher restrictions announced on Monday by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for areas of England classified as being at "very high" risk from COVID-19 will not be enough to control the outbreak there, the government's top medic said. Under the new three-tiered system, "very high" risk areas face pub closures and other restrictions on socialising. Speaking at a televised news conference alongside Johnson, Chief Medical Adviser Chris Whitty urged local authorities in these so-called "tier-3 areas", the worst-hit, to use their powers to introduce additional restrictions. "I am not confident, and nor is anyone confident, that the tier 3 proposals ... if we did the absolute base case and nothing more, would be enough to get on...

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new system of lockdown rules on Monday, classifying the risk level in regions to help tackle rising infection rates in parts of England and simplify existing regulations. WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT DOING THIS? Two reasons: 1. Because infection rates in parts of England, particularly in the north of the country, are rising fast. Health officials say data show infections are beginning to move from younger people to more vulnerable older age groups, and will continue to spread further across the country. 2. The existing rules are confusing. Over the summer, the government has tried to shut down outbreaks by tightening restrictions on an area-by-area basis. That has spawned a patchwork...

(Oct. 2 Foliage Update) — Some bad news to pass along. . . we have received several reports from up north in the past 24-48 hours that there has been a massive leaf drop and many of the vibrant reds and oranges have become rusty and muted. This is likely in response to the rain and wind event that occurred earlier in the week. So, the far northern New England region is now classified as slightly “past peak.”  This includes the highest elevations of the Greens and Whites. There are still some splashes of color and areas of brilliance, so all is not lost. . . but the overall landscape is changing quickly in northern Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine....
(CBS Boston) — The New England Patriots struggled early in their Week 3 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. But the sputtering offense started to purr by the second quarter. The Patriots never looked back, delivering the Las Vegas Raiders their first loss of the season. They’ll face another undefeated team this Sunday in Kansas City. While the Chiefs have been known to start slowly too, they rarely remain in first gear for long. Against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3’s matchup of leading AFC Super Bowl contenders, that wasn’t an issue. Quarterback and defending NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes led his offense on lengthy touchdown drives on four of the team’s first five possessions. They then held off the Ravens...
LONDON (Reuters) - There is some evidence that a recent sharp rise in new COVID-19 cases in England is levelling off, Britain's Office for National Statistics said on Friday, adding it was too early to know for sure. New cases of COVID-19 in England were around 8,400 per day in the latest week to Sept. 24, down from around 9,600 per day during the previous week, an ONS estimate said. "There is some limited evidence that the incidence rate may be levelling off following steep increases during August and September, however the wide credible intervals mean it is too early to say", the ONS said. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tightened restrictions and urged people to follow social distancing to...
LONDON (AP) — Britain imposed tighter restrictions on social gatherings in the port city of Liverpool and three towns as scientists reported Thursday that the number of COVID-19 cases in England has quadrupled or more in the last month. Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the House of Commons on Thursday that the infection rate in Liverpool had risen to 268 per 100,000 people, seven times the national average. He said it was time to extend tougher measures to the city, as well as to the nearby town of Warrington and in Hartlepool and Middlesbrough, which are at the other side of the country. The restrictions are similar to those imposed in northeastern England earlier this week, which forbid...

BOSTON (CBS) — Few things say New England more than bursting fall colors this time of year. This weekend may be your best chance to soak it all up, the best New England has to offer, with colors now nearing peak in a large portion of the region. Every season is a bit different, mainly dictated by the years weather. This year, the drought has had the biggest impact on the fall foliage season and the two words I hear most often are; “early” and “vibrant”. On average, the peak fall colors have been arriving later and later due to recent warming trends in the fall. This year however, has been just the opposite. Our severe to extreme drought has...

NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) — The federal government is once again urging mariners to slow down off New England to help protect a rare species of whale. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has extended a voluntary vessel speed restriction zone south of Nantucket. The agency implemented the zone in late August due to a sighting of a group of right whales. The use of the zone has been extended through Oct. 9. NOAA is asking mariners to proceed through the area at 10 knots or less, or avoid it altogether. The right whales number only a few hundred and they are vulnerable to collisions with ships. Las Vegas Raiders entered their Week Three clash against the New England Patriots as underdogs. They were unbeaten in the league at the start of the weekend. However, things did not go as planned for the Derek Carr-led Raiders at the Gillette Stadium on Sunday.
