LAKE JACKSON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Texas officials on Saturday lifted a warning for all but one Houston-area community to stop using tap water because it might be tainted with a deadly brain-eating microbe. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality warned the Brazosport Water Authority late Friday of the potential contamination of its water supply by naegleria fowleri. The authority initially warned eight communities not to use tap water for any reason except to flush toilets, but on Saturday it lifted that warning for everywhere but Lake Jackson. The city of more than 27,000 residents is the site of the authority’s water treatment plant. The advisory also was canceled for two state prisons and Dow Chemical’s massive Freeport works. During an appearance on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman expressed his concern over what could happen in November if there were enough doubt about the outcome of the November 3 presidential election. Friedman warned such a lack of confidence in the American election process could lead to a second civil war. “I found it stunning and surprising,” Friedman said of President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to commit to accepting the possible outcome of election results. “Anderson, you know, I began my career as a journalist covering Lebanon’s second civil war and its history. And I’m terrified to find myself ending my career as a journalist covering America’s potential second civil war in its history.” Host Anderson...
How risky is it to fly during the coronavirus pandemic? For clues, consider the travel histories of two of the country’s top infectious disease experts, each with parents on the other side of the country. One hasn’t flown since January when the new coronavirus was just emerging as a global threat. The other just flew back to San Francisco after visiting his 90-year-old father in Florida last month — wearing a face shield and removing his medical-grade N-95 respirator mask for just 30 seconds to chug some water and pretzels — and “felt pretty safe” to see everyone else wearing masks as well. “If the virus was able to get to me through that, it deserves it,” said Dr. Bob...

Since losing Al Horford in the 2019 free agency, the Boston Celtics have been active on the trade market searching for a defensive-minded big man. Though they currently have Enes Kanter, Daniel Theis, and Robert Williams III manning the center position, none of them could fill the hole that Horford left on the defensive end of the floor. The Celtics may be currently doing well in the 2019-20 NBA season, but they are still expected to continue finding a better center this fall. One of the most realistic targets for the Celtics in the 2020 offseason is Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers. With the emergence of Domantas Sabonis in Indiana, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Pacers decide to...

Filling the Supreme Court vacancy is of upmost importance to conservatives, but it will not lead us to the promised land of a constitutional paradise. At present, there is only one full-fledged originalist on the court, and in general, until the other GOP appointees get more aggressive in reversing new, malignant precedents in the lower courts, we will continue to suffer from judicial tyranny. However, the most auspicious prospect for a return to constitutional jurisprudence at the court will likely be in cases involving gun rights. Nothing to sneeze at, indeed, especially with the growing violence menacing our safety daily. Years after discovering many novel pseudo-rights, the Supreme Court finally recognized the Second Amendment's individual right to self-defense...

The Pacific Gas & Electric Co. may cut power to about 21,000 customers in parts of Butte, Plumas and Yuba counties this weekend as dry, unseasonably hot conditions and strong winds are expected to increase fire danger in the region. Utility officials said Thursday that a “public safety power shutoff” could be necessary because “hot and dry conditions, combined with expected high wind gusts, pose an increased risk for damage to the electric system that has the potential to ignite fires in areas with dry vegetation.” Though there’s “still uncertainty regarding the strength and timing of this weather system,” according to a PG&E statement, “high fire-risk conditions are expected to arrive Saturday evening, continue through Sunday evening and subside...

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman fears America could be at the cusp of a “potential second civil war” if President Donald Trump’s insinuations and suggestions are not taken seriously. On Thursday evening, Friedman appeared on CNN’s “AC360” with Anderson Cooper where he expressed concern about the president’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power and what it could mean for America. “I think what happened in the last few days is a six-alarm fire,” said Friedman. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist offered a chilling translation of Trump’s words as he insisted the president only laid out two choices for the upcoming election — both of which would lead to the same outcome if Trump is not stopped. “The President...

Dershowitz, the Harvard Law School professor emeritus, was among the 19 names on this list. A noted commentator on legal issues and criminal defense expert, Dershowitz gained notoriety with his involvement in a number of high-profile cases: He represented O. J. Simpson in his...
New York Knicks’ Dennis Smith Jr. is taking the superstitious route to spark his potential By: Alexander Wilson ShareTweetFlipRedditUnder new management, the New York Knicks are headed down a different path than in recent years. Of course, focusing on the youth agenda is a priority, but sparking some of their talented players will be a challenging task for new head coach Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeau was enamored by point guard Dennis Smith Jr. when he was drafted, but since entering the NBA, he has struggled immensely. With some of the most athletic traits you could ask for in a basketball player, he has not lived up to his potential so far. Averaging 15.2 points per game...
Giants’ Marc Colombo says ‘there’s a lot of room for improvement’ regarding Andrew Thomas By: Alexander Wilson ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Giants haven’t had an easy start to their 2020 season, especially rookie tackle Andrew Thomas, who has faced off against some of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Coming out of Georgia, Thomas was known as a solid pass protector with run blocking potential. He faced off against Bud Dupree in week one against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Khalil Mack in week two against the Chicago Bears. Both represent some of the best pass rushers in the league, and Thomas held his own for the most part despite an overall 56 grade by PFF....
An officer with the Seattle Police Department was placed on paid leave after a video appeared to show him rolling his bike over a protester's head. The Office of Police Accountability, a civilian-led review board, demanded an investigation into the incident after receiving more than 30 complaints from citizens who saw footage of the officer hitting the protester on Wednesday night. The incident took place in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, where protesters set up an autonomous zone for several days earlier this year called CHAZ and later CHOP. The King County Sheriff’s Office was asked to investigate the officer's actions after the Seattle Police Department's Force investigation team spotted "potential violations of SPD policy, as well as potential criminal...

In one of the transactions, Chinese billionaire Ye Jianming’s company sent $100,000 to Hunter’s law firm, according to the report. In another transaction, Chinese financier Gongwen Dong opened a line of credit with Hunter, which Hunter Biden, James Biden and James’s wife Sara used for a $100,000 spending spree, the report stated. Streams of foreign money flowing to Hunter Biden repeatedly triggered internal banking alarms as “potential criminal financial activity,” according to an investigation by two...
Chris Herndon looks the part. Now he needs to play the part. Because, more than ever, the Jets need him to start playing like the player they believe he is. He needs to be that guy now. Not in a couple weeks. Not later in the season. Like … starting this Sunday in Indianapolis. Dating back to the beginning of training camp, if you go back and listen to the interviews with coach Adam Gase and log the number of times he mentioned Herndon’s return from an injury-plagued 2019, you’ll be here for a while. In anticipation of having Herndon back, Gase spoke of the third-year tight end as if he was expecting Tony Gonzalez or Antonio Gates to run...
Despite colleges campuses throughout the country struggling with coronavirus outbreaks in recent weeks, new early data suggests that the situation may be less severe for younger students and their teachers, according to a report by the Washington Post. Researchers at Brown University released their first set of data Wednesday from the college's new National COVID-19 School Response Data Dashboard, which has been created in partnership with school administrators across the nation to track coronavirus cases among students and teachers. The researchers found that during a two-week period beginning Aug. 31, about 0.22 percent of students and 0.51 percent of teachers had a confirmed or suspected case of the coronavirus. The rates were even lower when looking solely at confirmed cases at 0.075 percent for students and 0.15 percent for...
The "Sex and the City" franchise is famous for putting four iconic female characters on television and the big screen, Kim Cattrall among them, but the star has made it known that she is ready to say goodbye to her character. Cattrall, 64, played Samantha alongside Cynthia Nixon's Miranda in the franchise, and a third film was nearly ready to begin filming until Cattrall reportedly dropped out, allegedly because her participation hinged on Warner Bros. producing projects she had in development, which they nixed. The studio ultimately chose not to move forward without all four of their leading ladies. Since then, fans have suggested recasting the role, often throwing Sharon Stone's name into the mix. Four U.S. companies have brought potential coronavirus vaccines to the third phase of trials, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday. Trump said the administration will grant $200 billion to companies to support the distribution effort so the vaccine can be as readily available as possible should it pass the third phase. Trump announced that Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) potential vaccine is the fourth U.S.-developed option to enter the third phase. He maintains that an effective vaccine could begin distribution in October, if it is approved. Barrett, a federal judge on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is a Catholic, and is considered the front-runner to be Trump's nominee to replace late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Barrett was also considered in 2018 when Brett Kavanaugh was ultimately nominated and confirmed. After a Kentucky grand jury opted to indict only one of the three Louisville Police officers in the raid that led to Breonna Taylor's death earlier this year, the city braced backlash. Former Sgt. Brett Hankison was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment for firing rounds during the raid that went into neighboring apartments, but not in the death of Taylor. The attorney for Taylor's family, Ben Crump, tweeted that the decision was "outrageous and offensive." Taylor, a 26-year-old Black emergency medical worker, was shot five times by officers who entered her home using a no-knock warrant during a drug investigation March 13. The warrant was connected with someone who did not live there, and no drugs were found during the search. The use...

He told reporters Wednesday that Democrats should “go to the American people, make the case why this is a gigantic mistake and abuse of power.” He said if there were another conservative justice on the court, the Affordable Care Act could be overturned and healthcare cost protections for women could be eliminated. Biden has said he won’t release...

Republicans senators have finished an investigation that President Donald Trump was impeached for pursuing. The central thesis of GOP’s findings about Hunter Biden focused on information largely known to the public: Biden’s position on the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma while his father Joe Biden was vice president “created an immediate potential conflict of interest that would prove to be problematic for both U.S. and Ukrainian officials and would affect the implementation of Ukraine policy.” But other salacious details about Hunter Biden receiving a large wire transfer from the widow of Moscow’s former mayor and Biden allegedly making payments to Russian women linked to human trafficking are now entering the public sphere at the height of his father’s...

House Democrats unveiled a sweeping package of government reforms Monday aimed at curbing future abuses of power by a president and strengthening congressional oversight powers, in response to the conflicts they've had with the Trump administration in the last three years.  The legislation, called the "Protecting Our Democracy Act," wouldn't pass the Republican-controlled Senate even if it were to pass the House before the end of the current Congress, but it is among the bills Democrats have prepared, should they recapture the Senate and White House this November. It would complement H.R.1, another reform package targeting voting rights, campaign finance and government ethics House Democrats passed in 2019.  The committee chairs who authored the legislation say it will prevent future abuses...

Up to 60,000 adult volunteers will be enrolled for the single-dose vaccine trial across 215 clinical research locations, according to the National Institutes of Health. Though months behind other candidates, it is the largest scale trial thus far and may yield sufficient data for results by the end of this year, according to Johnson & Johnson chief scientific officer Paul Stoffels. “Four COVID-19 vaccine candidates are in Phase 3 clinical testing in the United States just over eight months after SARS-CoV-2 was identified. Among the candidates for President Trump's potential Supreme Court pick to succeed Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a little-known Washington attorney who joined the White House to handle judicial nominations and has advised on a broad swathe of legal and constitutional issues. Like Ginsburg, Kate Comerford Todd, 45, is a graduate of Cornell University. She is the only attorney on Trump's potential shortlist who has never served as a judge. "She's a lovely lady," one former White House official told the Washington Examiner, who said that Todd, a former law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas who has twice counseled the White House, was a typically well-credentialed Washington attorney. (CNN)In a tense exchange between Amy Coney Barrett and Sen. Dianne Feinstein in 2017, the California Democrat sharply questioned whether the judicial nominee could separate her Catholic views from her legal opinions. "The conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you," Feinstein pointedly said. "And that's of concern when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for years in this country." The exchange became a rallying cry for Republicans -- and quickly put Democrats on the defensive as the GOP accused them of creating a religious litmus test for President Donald Trump's nominee to sit on the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Democrats said the exchange was in reference to Barrett's...

Joe Biden is already benefitting from eating into key Donald Trump support among seniors and white voters. But now there's evidence that younger voters—who largely side with Democrats—could turn in numbers not seen since Barack Obama jazzed the demographic back in 2008, according to the Washington Post's Greg Sargent. A new survey of 18-to-29 year olds from the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics not only showed Biden leading among the demographic by 33 points, 60%-27%, it also found nearly two-thirds of those voters (63%) saying they will "definitely be voting." Both numbers represent a marked improvement from 2016, when Hillary Clinton only garnered a plurality of support from the group at 49% and only 47% said they "definitely" planned to...

But Vivendi's opposition has forced Mediaset to freeze plans to create a Dutch holding company to pursue alliances in Europe. The two groups have been locked in a fight since 2016 when Vivendi ditched an accord to buy Mediaset's pay-TV unit and built a 29% stake which Mediaset...
