Brazil's 'super-covid' variant has arrived in the US with a first case in a Minnesota resident who recently returned from the hard-hit South American country.  The variant - known as P1 - is thought to be at least 50 percent more infectious.  It comes after President Biden reinstated travel bans blocking people travelers from entering the US from several countries with dangerous variants, including the UK and Brazil and added South Africa to the list.  But it was far too late. The Twin Cities resident tested positive for COVID019 on January 9 and was already ill by then   Brazil's variant is particularly worrisome because its mutations may render vaccines less effective.  The Brazilian variant has a mutation in its spike protein (circled in yellow) that makes it more contagious, capable of reinfection and potentially more immune to vaccines  The
A coalition of 15 Catholic priests working in Cuba defied the Communist Party and decades of Vatican distance from Cuban politics to publish a letter this weekend urging the Cuban people to “co-involve” themselves in their own liberation from communism and work to “break the chains” of the Castro regime. The letter, published in English by the U.S.-based human rights organization Global Liberty Alliance, states plainly, “Cuba needs political changes.” “We, as believers, consider that it is time, as a people, to return to God,” the priests write. The letter was published to coincide with the 23rd anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cuba, who left an extended legacy of confronting human rights atrocities under communism. The priests represent congregations nationwide, in all six traditional provinces of Cuba, and the list of signers of the letter include clergymen who prominently denounced communism in public throughout the last year,...
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Here is some free, unsolicited advice for Matt LaFleur: Don’t do what you just did. Sure, that message may be slightly tardy, but it also should’ve have been necessary at all. It’s just common sense. Don’t do that! “That”would of course be kicking a field goal from the 8-yard line while trailing by eight points with 2:09 left in a game that determines which NFC team will make the Super Bowl, and in a game where Tom FREAKING Brady is standing on the opposite sideline. Don’t do that. Don’t ever do that. Sure, sure, sure, Brady finally looked his age in that second half, perhaps succumbing to the Wisconsin winter and crumbling with three interceptions and a number of misfires in the second half. The Bucs’ 28-10 lead kept shrinking and shrinking and shrinking, thanks in large part to Tom Brady’s sudden addiction...

After over a year of laying the groundwork for a gubernatorial run, the former White House press secretary released a video on Monday formally announcing her campaign. Sanders is expected to have a major political foothold in the state as the daughter of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, and with Trump having carried the majority of Arkansas’ 2020 election vote, she used her video to highlight her service to his administration. “With the radical left now in control of Washington, your governor is your last line of defense. In fact, your governor must be on the front line.” Sanders said. “Our state needs a leader with the...
Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley is demanding an investigation into the Democrats who filed an ethics complaint against him. “This complaint is none other than a transparent attempt by seven Senators to punish a political opponent for the entirely lawful representation of their constituents,” Hawley wrote in one of two letters sent Monday morning. “The Senate cannot function if its neutral administrative processes are hijacked for bad-faith ends, but that is precisely what is occurring here.” The Missouri Republican called for the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate seven Democrats who called for an ethics investigation into both him and Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz  to probe and “fully understand their role” in the Capitol Riot on January 6, arguing that Hawley and Cruz’s actions “lend credence to the insurrectionists’ cause and set the stage for future violence.” Cruz and Hawley have both condemned the violence that took place during the...

Juan José Origel is giving something to talk about on social networks after he uploaded an image to his Twitter where he is seen receiving the vaccine against Covid-19 for which he has received several comments from Internet users. The 73-year-old television host in his message showed that he had to travel to the United States to receive the injection against the coronavirus that keeps the world in a health emergency, since here in Mexico he was not given such a shot. It should be remembered that the National Vaccination Plan of the Ministry of Health indicates that the first to receive the dose would be all health personnel who fight from hospitals, day after day and on the front line, this disease; in a second stage older adults are covered. However, Pepillo could not wait any longer and went to the neighboring country to the north to get the...

Sean McDermott played way too conservative against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs and learned his lesson the hard way. Fans of the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers are both having rough Sundays. The two fanbases are also sitting at home wondering why their coaches couldn’t stop opting for field goals over touchdowns. It is one thing to play like this in a regular season game. But being ultra-conservative in the playoffs is never going to be a recipe for success. That is true against the Chiefs or any team at this point in the year. Kicking short field goals just delayed the inevitable and prevented the Chiefs offense from ever feeling much stress. Andy Reid kept running his usual scheme and the Buffalo defense was faced with an impossible task without help from their head coach. The Bills are still in great shape moving forward. The team won a...

President Biden continues to believe the ruling Chinese Communist Party is committing genocide against the Uighur Muslim population, the Washington Examiner can confirm, after the Trump administration designated China’s actions as such the day before Biden’s inauguration. Emily Horne, the spokesperson for Biden’s National Security Council, told the Washington Examiner that “President Biden has called the oppression of the Uighurs a genocide, and he stands against it in the strongest possible terms.” Confusion ensued after a Friday press conference with Biden press secretary Jen Psaki, when Philip Wegmann of RealClearNews asked, “The previous administration on their way out the door declared that China’s human rights abuses against Uighur Muslims were, quote, ‘crimes against humanity’ and, quote, ‘a genocide’ — does the president agree with that determination and will he keep it?” The Biden spokesperson appeared noncommittal. “Well, I know that our secretary of state is just about...

There’s been some rumors about the political future of other Trumps now that Donald Trump is no longer president. Speculation of potential runs from Don Jr. and Lara has been going around, as well as a rumor Ivanka Trump could run for Senate against Marco Rubio. So towards the end of his interview with the Florida senator on Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace asked Rubio about a potential primary challenge from the former First Daughter. “There has been talk, as I’m sure you know, about the possibility that Ivanka Trump might run against you in a Republican primary in Florida in 2022,” Wallace said. “How seriously do you take Ivanka Trump as a potential opponent?” Rubio dismissively said he doesn’t “get into the parlor games of Washington” and added, “When you decide to run for reelection in a state like Florida, you have to be prepared for a competitive race.”...
President Biden enacted several executive actions to restructure U.S. immigration policy upon his inauguration and former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf shared his skepticism with "Sunday Morning Futures" on the lawfulness of these orders. The new president lifted the travel ban from several Muslim-majority countries, halted the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall and strengthened legal protections for Dreamers. Wolf asked and answered three questions in challenge to the orders: Are they lawful? Will they make DHS law enforcement officers' jobs more difficult? And will they entice more individuals to cross the border? CHICAGO (CBS Chicago/CBS News) — Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and former home run king Henry Louis “Hank” Aaron was remembered around the country and the world Saturday, a day after he passed away at the age of 86. Cubs legend Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins pitched against Aaron for 11 years. He shared some memories about the true home run king with CBS 2’s Matt Zahn. “Hank was diligent – very patient at the plate; didn’t swing at bad pitchers. And that’s, I think, a tribute to his ability. He knew the pitchers. He knew who he was going to face – from (Don) Drysdale, Jenkins, (Tom) Seaver, (Don) Sutton, whoever; (Juan) Marichal – he was pretty tolerant when he’d come to the plate, and he was swinging at his own pitch, not one that you were trying to get him out with,” Jenkins said. Jenkins played two stints with...

Healthcare centers across the U.S. have had to start canceling thousands of appointments to provide the COVID-19 vaccine in the face of dose shortages, prompting desperation and unanswered questions from health officials. York Times. Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city, is struggling with a similar problem when hospitals serving some of its poorest residents run out of the vaccine, prompting some public health experts to wonder why doses aren’t they are available to vulnerable communities, the newspaper also notes. By The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO — A federal appeals court has denied a Southern California church’s request to overturn the state’s coronavirus restrictions barring worship services indoors during the coronavirus pandemic. The Sacramento Bee says Friday’s ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals leaves the door open for addressing Gov. Gavin Newsom administration’s limits on church attendance if a California county is in a less-restrictive COVID-19 tier. A three-judge panel ruled against South Bay United Pentecostal Church of Chula Vista over public health orders that restrict religious services from being held inside while virus case rates and hospitalizations remain high. Currently in California, indoor worship services are banned in all purple-tiered counties — those deemed to be at widespread risk of coronavirus transmission. This tier accounts for the vast majority of the state. Just four counties are in less-restrictive tiers. __ THE VIRUS OUTBREAK: Life in the...

Cobra Kai season 3, the first batch of episodes to premiere on Netflix, does something fascinating with its Big Bad, John Kreese: In a story arc about how old rivalries and past trauma can continue to deal damage across decades, the show’s writers use the character to question the amount of automatic respect and trust that America places in its veterans. Such a loaded, nuanced criticism sticks out on Cobra Kai. The story of two karate students who fought each other in a tournament when they were kids, and find their rivalry revived in their adult lives as they both take on new karate students, is ridiculous. The show’s characters seem to know none of this makes sense, or is plausible in a normal reality, but knowing a situation is silly doesn’t mean you’re out of that situation. Every character in the show is stuck, in their own...
Leading Off ● 2020 Census: Shortly after taking office, President Joe Biden issued an executive order aiming to undo Donald Trump's attempt to weaponize the census against Latinos and Democrats to undermine their political representation. Biden's order rescinds Trump's directive that would have unconstitutionally removed undocumented immigrants from the population totals used to reapportion congressional seats and Electoral College votes among the states. It also directs the Census Bureau to halt the collection of citizenship data from administrative records, which Trump had ordered after he failed to get a citizenship question added to the 2020 census. Consequently, the census announced that it would no longer release citizenship data at the granular geographic level that used to craft new maps, likely making it impossible for states to draw districts on the basis of adult citizens instead of total residents, the latter of which has been the longstanding norm throughout U.S. history....

What does that mean for the vaccine‘s effectiveness, and will we need boosters every few years? Those questions are beginning to worry some experts. Charles asks: “Will the present vaccines protect us against the new strains of virus or will we have to have a new yearly vaccine for every new mutation?” There’s good news and bad news here, CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez says. The approach to biocompitable drug development begins with the use of tools such as advanced human genetics to unravel the complexities of disease and understand the fundamentals of human biology. While generics require approximately 50 quality control tests as part of the manufacturing process, biotech and biocomparable products may require approximately 250 tests to ensure that they meet all the necessary quality criteria. Biocomparability must be proven with specific clinical studies for each product. “Sufficient...
Economist Art Laffer argued against a Democratic push to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour as “extremely damaging” to poor people and minorities during a Thursday morning segment of Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” The $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan introduced by then President-elect Joe Biden on January 14 includes an additional $1,400 in direct payments to Americans as well as a federally mandated $15 per hour minimum wage. The proposed increase would more than double the current minimum wage of $7.25, which has been in effect since 2009. “It will really hurt these jobs a lot, Dana, as you point out. It will hurt them,” Laffer told anchor Dana Perino in response to a question about how such a hike would affect small businesses. “But it also has a very definite impact on the demographics of the United States as well.” WATCH: “A high minimum wage...
French health honchos are urging citizens to say au revoir to cotton masks because they simply aren’t effective enough against new, potentially more contagious variants of COVID-19. Instead, France’s health advisory council has recommend that single-use surgical masks should be worn. Experts here agree — and tell The Post it’s an important time to consider upgrading your mask choice. One homegrown mutation of the virus, dubbed 20C-US, is believed to be responsible for up to 50 percent of all US cases — hitting the Midwest the hardest, researchers said earlier this month. Those findings come a day after scientists at Ohio State University said they discovered a different strain of the COVID-19 virus — which carries a mutation similar to the UK strain. “As we progress in this pandemic, we are coming to the realization that no, not all masks are the same,” said Dr. Martin Cohen, assistant chair and teaching professor in...
Makan Delrahim, U.S. assistant attorney general for the antitrust division, speaks during the Wall Street Journal Tech Live global technology conference in Laguna Beach, California, U.S., on Monday, Oct. 22, 2019.Martina Albertazzi | Bloomberg | Getty Images Over more than three years at the helm of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division, Makan Delrahim has ventured to define antitrust enforcement as much by what it is not as by what it is. It is not only about whether prices go up or down for consumers — a yardstick that would make enforcement of tech platforms offering their services at zero cost to consumers virtually impossible to pursue. It's also about the quality of services for consumers and whether they have viable alternatives to turn to if they're not up to par. It is not, however, a "panacea" for all social ills, he often says. Under Delrahim's leadership, which ended Tuesday, the...

LThe Biden administration unveils Thursday a detailed roadmap focused on scientific expertise to fight Covid-19 by increasing vaccinations and screenings, as the pandemic enters its “deadliest” phase according to the new US president. The Democrat will immediately sign, according to officials, 10 decrees and other directives to launch this national strategy which was sorely lacking under his predecessor Donald Trump, in the opinion of many experts. “For nearly a year, the Americans couldn’t find any strategy, let alone a comprehensive approach to deal with Covid, with the federal government,” said Jeff Zients, who coordinates the new administration’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. “With President Biden taking office today, all that will change,” he told reporters. All this is motivated by a racist man who hates me ”. Oliveras says he never...
