Islamist fighters in Gao, Mali – 2012 A month after the coup in Mali, the military leaders remain firmly committed to the fight against jihadists, but until there is a deal on restoring democracy the position looks fragile, writes West Africa analyst Paul Melly. The final shape of Mali’s promised transition to new elections is yet to be settled several weeks after soldiers seized power in Bamako, forcing President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta to resign, although former Defence Minister Ban Ndaw has been named as interim leader. The junta hope this will satisfy fellow members of the Ecowas bloc of West African countries to accept its plan, after weekend talks to reassure opposition sceptics. But from the outset, the putchists...

The Los Angeles Lakers won a thrilling Game 2 on Sunday night against the Denver Nuggets, with Anthony Davis knocking down a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to give his team a 2-0 series lead. For Denver forward Paul Millsap, the feeling of losing to a LeBron James-led team in the playoffs is all too familiar. Yannick Ngakoue gets his welcome to Minnesota moment Ngakoue was acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars just a few weeks before the start of the regular season in an effort to replace Everson Griffen, a longtime Vikings edge rusher who signed with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason. Without much time to prepare in a new system, Ngakoue didn’t make much of an impact in the Vikings Week 1 loss against the Green Bay Packers. To be fair, though, most of the Vikings defense failed to show up in that one. Week 2 has been a different story for Ngakoue, as his sack-fumble could prove to be a pivotal turning point for Mike Zimmer’s team. Yannick Ngakoue sack-forced fumble against #Colts Philip...

Last year, Jones played consistently without Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard, and Saquon Barkley. That is not to mention tight end Evan Engram, who missed half the...

As much as half of the world's population may have some immunty to coronavirus, a small but growing body of research suggests.  Tests done on donated blood in the US found that about 50 percent of the samples had immune T cells that reacted to coronavirus, suggesting that the donors' bodies might have the natural ability to fight of the deadly virus.  Similar results have been found in the UK and Sweden.  COVID-19 is thought to be so deadly in part because it's an entirely new virus to  which humans have no natural immunity.  And while that is clearly the case for many people, British Medical Journal associate editor Dr Peter Dosh wrote on Thursday that the evidence is beginning...

It’s hardly new or revelatory to say this, but it’s critical to remember the role that “The Apprentice” played in turning Donald Trump, a notoriously bad businessman with a string of bankruptcies, into an American icon of capitalist success. Everything from careful editing to set designers giving the dreary Trump Organization offices a glow-up came together to create the illusion of success where only failure and mediocrity had been before. It was an experience so profound for Trump that he did something highly unusual: He learned something. He absorbed the idea that a well-constructed illusion of competence gets you all the benefits of being accomplished, without having to do the hard work of actually achieving anything. Unfortunately, it was a lesson we are...

VIDEO2:1302:13Chinese government bonds are an attractive proposition: JPMorgan Private BankSquawk Box Asia SINGAPORE — The Chinese yuan strengthened sharply against the U.S. dollar this week, following gains seen in recent months as the country's economy recovers and the greenback weakens. The offshore yuan has jumped more than 1% since last Friday, from levels above 6.83 to as much as 6.74 on Friday. The currency hit its strongest level against the dollar since May 2019. The onshore yuan also gained more than 1% over the same period. Overall, both the onshore and the offshore yuan have spiked more than 5% against the greenback since May. Analysts say recent strength in the yuan is due to a weakening dollar, which has slumped significantly this year,...
In a few days, the president contradicts his government’s scientists. A risky bet for his re-election? Presidents seeking reelection often confront their political rivals. But American Donald Trump has decided instead to contend with science. Two clear signs of that defiant attitude emerged this week, less than 50 days before the November 3 election. On Wednesday, Trump publicly contradicted the director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), who had ruled out that a coronavirus vaccine could be massively available before mid-2021 and said that use of masks can be more effective than the vaccine to prevent infections. “He made a mistake,” Trump said of each of those two Dr. Robert Redfield considerations. The president insisted...
Who knew a star like Urmila Matondkar would have faced nepotism in the industry? For the ones who thought if the practice gained momentum only recently and the production houses like Dharma should be blamed for making it so prevalent, here’s what Urmila has to say about her experiences. The actress in her recent conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt opened up about her struggles in the industry and how she believes she was written off like nobody else in the industry and why media was more discriminating towards her. Urmila Matondkar Appreciation Tweets Flood Twitter After Kangana Ranaut Calls Her ‘Soft Porn Star’. “This word called ‘nepotism’, if I start talking about it, I will have to talk for quite...
Waves of former officials working for President Donald Trump have consistently turned on him and denounced his conduct throughout his first term in the Oval Office, a trend that only seems to be accelerating as the November election approaches. Olivia Troye, a former aide to former Vice President Mike Pence who worked on the coronavirus task force, was the latest to condemn the president in searing terms on Thursday. In an ad for Republican Voters Against Trump, she described the president as callous to the deaths of Americans and only interested in his re-election. She likely isn’t the last Trump officials to come out against him, and she certainly wasn’t the first. Miles Taylor and Elizabeth Neumann, both former high-ranking...
New York Giants: A More Creative Rushing Attack Is The Key To A Win Against Chicago By: Anthony Rivardo September 17, 2020 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Giants‘ rushing attack was shut down in Week One of the 2020 NFL season. The Giants were handed a disappointing loss on Monday night against the stout Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Pittsburgh has one of the best defenses in the league and they absolutely suffocated Saquon Barkley and the Giants’ offensive line. Saquon Barkley is under criticism this week for his performance as a pass-blocker in Week One. But all are aware of the fact that Saquon is one of the best running backs in the NFL when his...
Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump railed against what he described as "the liberal indoctrination of America's youth" during a Constitution Day speech on Thursday, marking his latest attempt to inflame the culture wars raging in America ahead of the election. In a speech rife with race-baiting and dog whistles, the President decried "left-wing mobs" and claimed their tactics were comparable to anti-American propaganda used by foreign adversaries. "We must clear away the web of twisted lies in our schools and classrooms and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country. We want our sons and daughters to know that they are the citizens of the most exceptional nation in the history of the world," Trump said at the White House Conference...
(CNN)Justice Department prosecutors looked into the possibility of bringing criminal or civil charges against local officials in Portland, Oregon, over their handling of weeks of protests that for a period laid siege to a federal courthouse and other buildings, according to Kerri Kupec, a Justice Department spokeswoman. The idea is part of Attorney General William Barr's push for aggressive action by federal prosecutors against violence surrounding nationwide protests following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police in May.Typically, in times of local unrest, local prosecutors take the lead in bringing charges against people carrying out violence. But Barr has pushed for greater use of federal prosecution, even in relatively minor cases usually left up to local...

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said on Thursday that a report which claimed Attorney General Bill Barr had suggested charging her with sedition for allowing the 'CHOP' zone to be created in her city is ‘chilling and the latest abuse of power from the Trump administration.’ ‘The Department of Justice cannot become a political weapon operated at the behest of the President to target those who have spoken out against this administration's actions,’ Durkan, a former US attorney, said in a statement. ‘That is an act of tyranny, not of democracy.’ ‘Ultimately, this is not a story about me. It is about how this President and his Attorney General are willing to subvert the law and use the Department of Justice...
(CBSLA)- The Chargers got the victory in Week 1, albeit with a bit of luck, 16-13 over the Cincinnati Bengals as Cincy kicker Randy Bullock missed a 31-yard field goal wide right. Still, a win is a win, and the Chargers enter their Week 2 matchup with the division rival Kansas City Chiefs 1-0. The Chargers dropped both matchups against Kansas City last season though they were close, 24-17 in Week 11 and 31-21 in Week 17. The biggest problem in each of those games was turnovers. Philip Rivers threw four picks in the first matchup and another two in the final game of the year. Rivers threw two picks late in the fourth quarter of the Week 11 contest...
Harris is now the top GOP target for brutal racial stereotypes, 'birtherism' conspiracy theories, and inappropriate sexual comments. Kamala Harris, the first Black woman in history to be nominated as a major party's vice presidential candidate, has been the near-constant target of racist and misogynist slurs by Trump and his supporters. American law professor John Eastman — who unsuccessfully ran in the primaries for California Attorney General in a race Harris ultimately won — was among the first to jump the bandwagon after Harris's nomination on Aug. 11, penning a Newsweek op-ed questioning Harris's eligibility for the office of the vice presidency. Eastman argued that although Harris was born in Oakland,...
Miami Heat came off with a hard-fought game one victory to open their Eastern Conference Finals series against the Boston Celtics. However, the Celtics were just one play away from snagging this win. Bam Adebayo rose to deny Jayson Tatum at the rim in a stunning block, which allowed Miami to hold on to their two-point lead in OT. Five-time NBA Champion Magic Johnson was in disbelief with what he saw. He promptly tweeted out a statement saying that Bam’s block might have been the best defensive play in Playoffs history. Six years ago, when California lawmakers mounted a campaign to repeal the state’s ban on affirmative action in college admissions, Chinese American opponents of the proposal flooded lawmakers with calls, emails and petitions. Their campaign, mobilized on the group messaging app WeChat and in Chinese-language media, was successful, and the constitutional amendment died in the Legislature. This year, a better-organized effort has put Proposition 16 on California’s November ballot. It’s an even broader initiative that would reverse the measure approved by voters in 1996 banning any consideration of race and gender in public college admissions, as well as other government functions such as hiring and contracting. The initiative’s supporters have dwarfed their opponents in fundraising and endorsements. But they are...
The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world: ___ The Tennessee Titans won’t have fans at their home opener Sunday against Jacksonville. That will change in October and increase with each of their next three home games. Nashville Mayor John Cooper announced Thursday the Titans will be able to have up to 10% of capacity at Nissan Stadium, or about 7,000 fans, on Oct. 4 against Pittsburgh. Barring setbacks, that will jump to 12.5% or 8,500 on Oct. 11 for a home game against Buffalo and up to 15% (10,000) on Oct. 18 for a game against the Houston Texans. That’s part of a plan to reach a fixed capacity of 21% for the...
Photo by Kyle Zedaker via Tampa Bay BucsLast week it was Mike Evans, this week it’s Chris Godwin. Godwin entered concussion protocol this Wednesday after taking a big hit to the head during Sunday’s game versus the Saints. The former Penn State man apparently seemed fine Monday and Tuesday but showed symptoms Wednesday at practice. This will make him at least questionable for Sunday’s game against the Panthers, but more than likely he’ll be (as Mike Evans was last week) listed as doubtful. The star receiver took a big hit from Saints safety DJ Swearinger, but stayed in the game after walking off the field on his own. Godwin racked up 6 catches for 79 yards in the loss and...

The Los Angeles Clippers and the Denver Nuggets matchup has been the talk of the town now.  There were so many speculations about who will end up winning the series. Ultimately, the Nuggets took the opportunity and grabbed this series from the clutches of defeat. They recovered from a 3-1 deficit, one considered nearly impossible to rise from. On the first Sunday of September, a work crew showed up alongside the Cattaraugus Tunnel, a highway underpass in Los Angeles, and stacked 66 large boulders along its walls. The rocks appeared in the tunnel, which connects the L.A. neighborhoods of Reynier Village and the Culver City Arts District, without notice or forewarning, leaving residents to discover them on their own. The next day, a local organizer snapped a picture of the scene, writing: “What the absolute fuck is this shit?”  The answer was “hostile architecture,” or urban design features ostensibly deployed to deter crime, but which often serve only to limit where unhoused people can sleep. Before the boulders arrived, the tunnel had been home to at least three...

By Patpicha Tanakasempipat BANGKOK (Reuters) - Chemicals giant Bayer and the U.S. government cooperated closely last year to lobby Thailand to reverse its ban on glyphosate, used in the company's controversial weedkiller Roundup, documents obtained by an environmental group and reviewed by Reuters show. The lobbying, including U.S. trade officials asking Bayer for information on Thailand's deputy agriculture minister, is detailed in more than 200 pages of partially redacted documents and emails, some directly between U.S. officials and a Bayer representative. The documents were obtained under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act by the Tucson, Arizona-based Center for Biological Diversity, which shared them with Reuters. Thailand eventually dropped plans to ban glyphosate a few days before the ban was due...

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that masks are the most effective way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 — even more effective than a vaccine. Director Robert Redfield, testifying before a Senate committee, urged everyone in America to wear masks in public, saying the pandemic could be controlled in six to 12 weeks if everyone complied. "These face masks are the most important, powerful public health tool we have," Redfield said. "And I will continue to appeal to all Americans, all individuals in our country, to embrace these face coverings. I've said it, if we did it for six, eight, 10, 12 weeks, we'd bring this pandemic under control. These, actually...

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) — With the COVID-19 pandemic remaining a public health threat, Contra Costa County health officials Wednesday advised against the usual Halloween traditions — trick-or-treating, haunted houses, big parties — to minimize the risk of spreading the virus. County Health Officer Dr. Chris Farnitano told the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors he is recommending families forego trick-or-treating this year, as the candy given out is typically touched by at least a few people, and that even doorbells touched by multiple people could result in greater spread of the coronavirus. “COVID-19 can easily pass from person to person through close contact, and it’s difficult to maintain a safe distance on porches and doorsteps, especially in neighborhoods where...

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is preparing a possible antitrust lawsuit against Facebook after a year of investigating whether the social media giant is stifling competition through acquisitions, according to a source.   The consumer trust watchdog is gearing up to file a suit against the social media giant before the end of 2020, an unidentified person familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.  The FTC, headed by Republican chairman Joseph Simons, has spent more than a year carrying out a probe into Facebook's practices and whether the company has broken antitrust laws and used its dominant position in the tech sector to stamp out competition. News of a possible suit comes after founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was brought before the...

In a case where Washington is challenging the company’s dominance on Facebook social media, according to people familiar with the matter, the Federal Trade Commission is set to file a no-confidence motion against Facebook Inc. by the end of the year. The lawsuit was filed after the FDC spent more than a year worrying that Facebook was using its powerful market position to mitigate competition as part of a broader effort by U.S. trust officials to investigate the behavior of a handful of dominant technology companies. No final decision has been made on whether to sue Facebook, and those familiar with the matter have said that when it comes to filing a no-confidence complaint against Google, the Commission does not...
Getty Michael Gallup Michael Gallup eschewed the high road in the emotionally-charged moments after Sunday’s controversial loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Robbery victims tend to be unforgiving, and Gallup won’t soon forget what was taken from him. “Honestly, when you’re playing away, you’ve got to make sure you know you’re playing against the refs and the other team. Lawmakers in Pennsylvania are considering a bill that would make not wearing a mask in public against the law. Senate Bill 1287 says that failing to wear a mask or another face covering during the pandemic would be akin to "recklessly endangering another person." It would be a second-degree misdemeanor. "Failure to adhere to emergency order. A person commits a misdemeanor of the second degree if the person willfully fails to wear a mask or other face covering that is necessary to protect public health as a result of a declaration by the Governor," the bill text reads. State Rep. Tim ONeal, a Republican, told NorthcentralPA.com he opposes the legislation. "While we should all wear masks, keep our social distance,...
Sean Rayford/Getty Images As I predicted near the start of the pandemic, the response to the virus has caused America to be more clearly divided between “red” and “blue” factions than at any time in our modern history. Nothing is more emblematic of this dangerous reality than the dramatic difference in the way that mask mandates are viewed within these two worlds. People in red/conservative states are far less in favor of government mask mandates than those in the blue/liberal states (today has even been declared a day of “Mask Off” protests in some portions of the country). This disparity was most obvious at the recent political conventions and campaign events, showing that Donald Trump supporters are very likely to...

Three months before Election Day, James Barnes teleconferenced into a strategy meeting about how, exactly, to persuade people not to vote for Donald Trump. The 32-year-old wore his hair loosely gathered in a man bun and had the sober expression of someone who, as a hazard of his occupation, thinks about the president nearly all the time. Other faces popped up on his monitor, offering glimpses into millennial apartments, until someone started a screen share. They were here to review a series of video testimonials by conservatives who had decided to oppose Trump. Barnes and his colleagues wanted to know which ones resonated most with prospective voters on Facebook. Were testimonials from men or women more effective? Midwesterners or Southerners?...
