The strike was organized by supporters of Fight for $15 and a Union, the labor advocacy group that has been pushing to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour and grant collective bargaining rights to fast food employees, who are disproportionately Black and Brown.Fight for $15 organizing director Allynn Umel said her organization's cause is one King would have championed, noting that the civil rights icon marched in support of labor rights for Memphis sanitation workers the day before he was assassinated in 1968."There are workers in the South still continuing to...

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — It's been a tough year for Omaha's zoo, but the director of the facility sees better times ahead. The COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on attendance and membership sales at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. The zoo recently set a budget for 2021 of about $36 million — about 60% less than the original 2020 budget. The zoo suffered an estimated $26 million revenue loss in 2020. “(We’re) moving one cautious step at a time,” Dennis Pate, the director and CEO of the zoo, told the Omaha World-Herald. The coronavirus closed the zoo to the public from March 16 through June 1, and it reopened with significant restrictions. That resulted in salary reductions and layoffs affecting about 10% of staff. But in recent months have seen an increase in attendance, membership purchases and aid from federal coronavirus relief money. It helped that the fall was...
CHICAGO (CBS) — It’s a decades long tradition on Chicago’s South Side. On Friday morning, Christmas morning, Saint Sabina Church will deliver hundreds of meals to people in need. CBS 2’s Brandon Merano reports the parish has lots of volunteers to help with the effort. It’s a cold Christmas, but hundreds of volunteers have been working to warm the hearts of the homeless and veterans all week. Normally there would be plenty of people packing into the church to get a free holiday meal. But since COVID cancelled a lot of holiday plans this year, Father Michael Pfleger and his team are getting creative. They’ve enlisted the help of six Black owned businesses in the area, paying them to cook Christmas dinners, then delivering the food to the homeless and veterans. It’s the second event they’ve done like this in the last week alone. Volunteers will be out from 11:00...

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The season’s first major snowstorm may be over, but now the area is dealing with bitter cold temperatures. With the snow freezing over, some roads and sidewalks continue to be slick and dangerous. New Jersey has lifted all vehicle travel restrictions on interstate highways, but the Department of Transportation still urges caution, saying “drifting snow and ice is a concern.” “Only by God’s grace I can handle it. Just have to be careful and smart. Hopefully we will be alright,” truck driver David Coulbourne told CBS2. A look at the day ahead from Julien Ponthus. European futures are cautiously lower, which matches the cautious mood of 2020’s Black Eye Friday: far from the wild office parties and nights out, most of Europe is under tight restrictions. The last Friday before Christmas is typically one of the busiest of the year for the British police and emergency services as revellers flock en masse to city centres for a last round of drinks with friends and colleagues. But this year most of the partying has been on Wall Street, where stocks have reached new records, high on hopes of more U.S. fiscal stimulus. In Europe, expectations for a post-Brexit trade deal finally being struck have also propped up markets to a large extent. Black Eye Friday may prove to be a painful reminder for investors as COVID-19 continues to cause damage, with the death toll and economic disruption...

By JOSEPH PISANI, AP Retail Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Retail sales fell 1.1% in November, the biggest drop in seven months, and a sign Americans held back on spending during the start of the holiday shopping season. The U.S. Commerce Department also revised October’s number, saying on Wednesday that retail sales actually fell 0.1% that month, instead of rising 0.3% as it previously reported. Americans have cut back on spending after losing a $600 weekly boost to unemployment checks that expired over the summer. A surge in coronavirus infections nationwide is also keeping Americans from spending. Shoppers mostly stayed home on Black Friday, which is typically the busiest day of the holiday shopping season. Crowds at malls and stores were thin after health officials warned people not to shop in person. Retailers followed suit by putting their best deals online. Half as many people shopped inside stores this Black...

(CBS Detroit) — COVID-19 will have a huge effect on Black Friday this year, much as it has on everything else. Some of those effects can already be seen in the expanded holiday shopping season, which has been going on since mid-October. Other effects will become more evident over the long Thanksgiving weekend. At one time, Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving, marked the beginning of the holiday shopping season. The name is derived from the day retailers see their balance sheets turn from red to black. According to Jie Zhang, Professor of Marketing and Retail Management at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, “the legend was that retailers work their heads off for much of the year, and it’s only the beginning of the holiday shopping season, that is, the Friday after Thanksgiving, that they turn black. So they turn red to black,...

Activists in France staged a demonstration against Amazon’s ongoing expansion in the country last week. Protesters piled up Amazon delivery boxes and unveiled several banners with anti-Amazon slogans in front of the Finance Ministry. Three activist organizations, ANV-COP 21, Attac, and Amis de la Terre, took part in the demonstrations. ANV-COP21’s Sandy Olivar Calvo spoke to Reuters about her group’s involvement. “Amazon is destroying jobs and climate in France. It plans to massively expand in France, with dozens of warehouses already built and more to come. We demand a freeze [on building more],” she said. In particular, the groups are concerned with the conversion of farmland into urban space that results from the building of Amazon warehouses and the loss of biodiversity that this entails. Additionally, the protesters outside the Finance Ministry say Amazon’s practices are at odds with the French traditions of supporting small-scale local businesses and shops....

In the 1830s, according to local lore, Huston Hollow, located eight miles above Portsmouth, became the location of an African-American community, which often served as the first Underground Railroad stop for figutive slaves who had crossed the Ohio River at Portsmouth. Here Joseph Love and Dan Lucas, both African American, are said to have been the most active operators, helping move runaway slaves up the Scioto Valley to the next station in Pike County. Huston Hollow’s black community is said to have its origin in one of Portsmouth’s most notorious events and what must be considered one of the city’s darkest chapters of history. “Black Friday,” as it has come to be known, involved the forced expulsion of much of the city’s black population, a number of which found refuge in Huston Hollow. On Friday, January 21st, 1831, the following notice appeared in the city’s paper: “The citizens of Portsmouth...

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – New data tracking the movements of North Texans is helping researchers gauge whether the Thanksgiving holiday will actually turn out to be a superspreader event for COVID-19. Leading up to the holiday, health officials sounded the alarm about taking part in typical Thanksgiving traditions as cases surged in the Metroplex. Two of their biggest concerns were large group gatherings and in-person Black Friday shopping. “So both of these two events can be potentially dangerous from a spread of COVID-19 perspective,” said Dr. Rajesh Nandy, an associate professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the UNT Health Science Center. He’s been analyzing mobility data from Black Friday, which shows how many people actually went out to stores by tracking their cell phone movements. “We did find that it actually wasn’t any higher than normal, and we saw that all across the four counties in the Metroplex,” he said....
Holiday shoppers spent less while staying at home over the Black Friday shopping weekend this year. Shoppers on average spent $312 on holiday-related items over the Black Friday weekend, accounting for a 14% drop from the same time in 2019, a survey released by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights and Analytics on Tuesday found. The survey also found that 37% fewer shoppers participated. The coronavirus pandemic hurt numbers as shoppers concerned about the risk of large crowds ditched the in-person experience of Black Friday and turned to the internet for deals. Shoppers spent over $10 billion during Cyber Monday, a shopping holiday on the Monday following Black Friday that emphasizes online commerce. Black Friday, the cornerstone shopping event of the U.S. holiday season, has become notorious for big savings, big crowds, and viral videos of shoppers fighting one another for the latest consumer gifts. Black Friday was a bust this year, but not for those selling the new Playstation 5. Videos show hourslong lines in front of GameStop stores and unruly crowds of eager fans trying to get their hands on the freshly released $500 console. “The second they opened the doors to the mall,” Agata Lendziszewska told ABC7 of a clip she recorded on Black Friday showing gamers running and falling through Fort Myers, Florida’s Port Charlotte Town Center toward a GameStop.   “You guys need to relax,” one security guard demanded of a disorderly crowd at a Irvine, California, GameStop.  In Dublin, California, 20-year-old Tyler Lopez waited 36 hours to score one of the only two PS5s being sold at his local GameStop, but said he had no regrets. “Definitely relieving,” he reflected after finally getting the device. “The console itself was already good enough, but now I get to be on...
This Cyber Monday set the record as the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history. According to an analysis from Adobe Analytics, people spent $10.8 billion in online purchases on Cyber Monday. But while online shopping saw a surge, spending at traditional brick-and-mortar stores saw a significant decline. Likely a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Black Friday shopping saw a decrease of roughly 50% this year, according to CNBC. However, online Black Friday shoppers spent $9 billion, Adobe revealed. Adobe originally estimated that the total Cyber Monday haul would be $12.7 billion, but the company decreased its forecasting in recent days. The firm estimates that shoppers will spend $184 billion online throughout the entire holiday season. If the country does spend that much, the purchases will represent a 30% increase over last year's numbers. On Tuesday, Amazon reported that selling on its website surpassed $4.8 billion worldwide...

A 32-year-old man was struck in the ankle and taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan by private means, cops said.  It was unclear whether he was the intended target, and the motive was unknown.  The shooter bolted on foot, and the Nissan driver took off, the clip shows.  The suspect is shown in a surveillance image wearing a dark-colored, patterned Nike hoodie, black pants and sneakers.

The major trade group said about 186 million holiday shoppers bought holiday gifts, food or decorations from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday. That's less than the 189 million shoppers who bought items during that period last year, but higher than the 166 million who shopped in 2018. Average spending on gifts, decoration and food was $312, down about $50 from last year, the trade group said. On a call with reporters, NRF Chief Executive and President Matt Shay said shoppers concentrated less of their shopping during the weekend since...

Cyber Monday spending rose 15.1% year over year, according to Adobe, which analyzes website transactions from 80 of the top 100 U.S. online retailers. For many retailers this year, however, the one-day online shopping event has a diminished role because of the coronavirus pandemic. Many big-box retailers like Walmart and Target started their deals in mid-October to coincide with Amazon Prime Day and plan to have more in the weeks ahead. And on Black Friday — a one-day event that's typically centered around stores and malls — customers made many of their purchases on...
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Police have arrested the teen who allegedly shot and killed two other teens inside Arden Fair Mall on Friday. Damario Beck, 18, has been arrested for the shooting that killed brothers Dewayne James Jr., 19, and Sa’Quan Reed-James, 17, during one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The victims’ father Dewayne James Sr. was devastated to learn both of his sons were killed. “My kids, they gone I can’t get them back,” James Sr. said. “At first I wanted to get revenge, but as days go by I get a little stronger.” Shooting victims Dewayne James Jr. (left) and Sa’Quan Reed-James (right). An Amazon fulfillment center in Frankenthal, Germany.Thorsten Wagner | Bloomberg | Getty Images Amazon said Tuesday that this year's holiday shopping season has been the biggest in its history, as the coronavirus pandemic forced more people than ever to do their shopping online. The e-commerce giant said in a blog post that customers have been shopping early for gifts and seasonal items for their loved ones. It comes as many retailers reliant on physical stores have been struggling to survive. Popular purchases so far include the new Echo Dot, Barack Obama's "A Promised Land" book, and the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Brush, Amazon said. Self-care, "nesting at home", and "cozy comfort" were among the most popular trends during the period. "In a holiday season unlike any other, it's clear that customers still want great deals on gifts for their loved ones or a little something extra for themselves,...
CHICAGO (CBS) — On Cyber Monday, Americans are expected to spend more than $12 billion in online stores. Some small mom and pop shops in the northern suburbs are fighting for a piece of that e-commerce pie. CBS 2’s Jim Williams reports they may be winning. At Style Shack, a store in Highland Park, lots of items are packed up, ready to be shipped out. “We sell a number of home decor items, jewelry, gifts of all sorts. Things to definitely boost the mood,” said the owner of Style Shack, Sherry Levin. Levin’s mood is certainly brighter this Cyber Monday. For the first time in her store’s 14 year history, she’s selling online. Sales are up 20%. “It’s been marvelous. It has most definitely helped us,” Levin said. “We are able to reach a much broader audience.” Like all brick and mortar stores, Style Shack has been hurt by the...
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Holiday shopping is in full swing and with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday behind us, some small businesses saw a bump in sales over the weekend. But was it enough to offset the lost revenue from the COVID-19 pandemic?"There's still a good portion of people who just don't feel comfortable coming in yet and we are negatively impacted by that," said Richard Price, owner of the Alamo Shoes in Andersonville.Their shelves are stocked - but the store is nearly empty because the small business just isn't getting the foot traffic it once did before the pandemic. But over the Black Friday weekend, things changed - for just a bit."Since we reopened in June, this past Friday and Saturday were the busiest days we've seen since June, so that is positive," Price said. But it's still down in comparison to last year's sales."Year over year, if we compared 2020 to...
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – It’s expected to be a record-shattering day for online shopping. Sales on this Cyber Monday could surpass $11 billion, according to an industry group. Black Friday was the second-largest online shopping day in U.S history, according to Adobe Analytics data, making for an optimistic start to the season. “Strong growth in online, not just on Black Friday but on Thanksgiving Day itself,” said Katherine Cullen of the National Retail Federation. “Strong growth in mobile as well as services like curbside and ‘buy online, pickup in store.'” And during a year that’s ravaged the retail sector, business owners say they’re counting on it. “We’re hoping for, of course, a great holiday season,” said Amy Coffey, co-owner of Dallas-based Accessory Concierge. “We feel the pinch of a lot of other online retailers who might not have been so reliant on online in the past but who are now.”...
NEW YORK – The viral pandemic is accelerating a transformation of America's holiday shopping season. Few people showed up at the mall this weekend, with millions of pandemic-wary shoppers staying home to shop online. The result? Overall holiday sales are projected to rise a slight 0.9% in November and December — and even that modest gain will be due to an explosion in online shopping, according to the research firm eMarketer. It expects online sales to jump nearly 36%, while sales at physical stores fall 4.7%. The online rush was on fully display Monday, known as Cyber Monday, a day of sales promoted by retailers back in 2005. Once the final numbers are tallied up, this year's Cyber Monday is projected to become the biggest online shopping day in American history. Here’s how this holiday shopping season is shaping up: “BLEAK FRIDAY” Black Friday, typically the frenzied...
There was an 8% drop in the number of FBI criminal background checks regarding firearms sales on Black Friday from a year ago, but the more than 186,0000 was still the fourth-highest number of one-day requests on record. The Friday after Thanksgiving typically sees large numbers of FBI checks, USA Today reported, occupying half of the top 10 one-day requests, but the 186,645 processed last Friday was fewer than the 202,465 in 2019. It comes in a year of unprecedented numbers of FBI checks and guns sales. The FBI said through October it had processed more than 32 million requests, 4 million more than the previous record with two months remaining. Additionally, analysis firm Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting said in late October a record of nearly 17 million firearms had been sold in the United States this year. The previous record was eclipsed in August. FBI background checks have...
Toy cars, video games and Apple products were among the top-selling items on Black Friday this year. Consumers spent a whopping $9 billion online the day after Thanksgiving, up nearly 22% from last year's shopping extravaganza and the second-biggest day for ecommerce sales in U.S. history after Cyber Monday in 2019. Concerns over COVID-19, along with customer capacity limits at retailers, thinned crowds at stores and malls this year. But shoppers still pounced on online deals for Hot Wheels, tracks and gift sets, which were among the top-selling items on Black Friday, according to Adobe Analytics.  The Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Animal Crossing video games for the Nintendo Switch system were also in demand, as were Apple's Airpods ear buds and the Apple Watch. The smartwatch category saw a big surge in sales, soaring more than 600% over the daily average in October.  Get Breaking News Delivered to Your Inbox Adobe identified...

Police say that based on preliminary evidence, the shooting was caused by a verbal altercation between two groups of people who had previous run-ins, according to a Sacramento Police Department statement. Detectives are continuing their investigation and believe there are additional people involved in the incident and witnesses. They plan to release more information as the investigation progresses. Arden Fair Mall is being credited with helping identify the suspect. As a result of the shooting, Arden Fair mall had to close early.
Over 186,000 firearm background checks were performed on Black Friday 2020, making it the fourth-highest one-day total for National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks on record. USA Today reported that there were 186,645 NICS checks on Black Friday 2020. Forbes observed this year’s Black Friday shoppers would be met by “lean inventories and Covid-19 restrictions,” noting that Friday was the day North Carolina’s mask mandate took effect. The outlet also noted that lockdowns in California were not helpful to gun sales. For example, Danielle Jaymes, general manager of Poway, California’s Poway Weapons and Gear Range, said, “[On] Black Friday we were down about 50% versus last year. We were still busy, but we were down 50% because California is on lockdown. We could only allow a certain number of people inside at a time, so it really hindered what we can do.” This year has been a record for...

People walk through the King of Prussia mall, on Black Friday, in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.Sarah Silbiger | Reuters Instead of rushing to malls, Black Friday shoppers largely headed to retailers' websites this year. The deal-heavy holiday came in the middle of a sales season that began in October and will stretch beyond Christmas. Black Friday did not play its typical role of starting the holiday shopping frenzy, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. The health crisis has upended the cadence of holiday shopping, making it difficult to gauge how successful the season will be for retailers based on the size of Black Friday crowds. Shoppers have been checking off their gift lists since October. That led to a drop in demand over the holiday weekend. Consumer spending fell 22.4% year over year during the period from Thanksgiving to Sunday, according to GlobalData, which uses consumer panels and data from retailers,...

American shoppers spent a record amount of money online during Black Friday this year as the coronavirus pandemic kept shoppers at home.  An estimated $9 billion was spent on goods from U.S. retail websites as part of the annual shopping blitz, according to Adobe Analytics. The Associated Press reported that figure is a 22 percent increase over the last record, set in 2019 when $7.4 billion was spent online. Sales of jewelry and footwear reportedly saw some of the largest decreases in terms of in-person sales.  With coronavirus cases surging in several states across the country, public health officials have warned all Americans against gathering in-person or leaving their homes for non-essential reasons.  Just before the Thanksgiving holiday, the Centers for...
