Owners of older Cowboy 2 and brand-new Cowboy 3 e-bikes will receive a free software update that adds crash detection by the end of September. It’s an industry-first safety feature, according to the Belgian startup that recently took in $23 million for expansion. Cowboy can detect a fall using the bike’s built-in sensors. The company uses the speed sensor in the wheel, the torque sensor to check if force is being applied to the pedal, and the accelerometer to determine if an accident has occurred. The company says that its algorithm is able to reduce the number of false positives “close to zero.” Emergency braking, dropping your bike on its side, hitting a pothole, or riding over cobblestones won’t...
Washington, DC (CNN)"VanMoof is like the Mercedes-Benz or the Tesla of electric bikes," Casey Neistat, who has 12.2 million subscribers on YouTube, said earlier this month. And now, the Dutch electric bike startup has raised a $40 million funding round from venture capitalists.VanMoof's sleek bikes automatically shift gears. They have lights built into the bicycles' frame. There's automatic anti-theft technology that locks the wheel and sounds an alarm if someone tries to move the bike while it's parked, and each bike is also geo-tagged. VanMoof CEO Taco Carlier told CNN Business that the company employs a team of "bike hunters," who track down stolen bikes and have a 75% success in Europe. (It's lower in the United States because geotags...
E-bikes continue to disrupt the commuting industry and have made urban transport easier, greener, healthier, and faster. Most e-bikes offer either a pedal-assist function that kicks on a motor after a rider completes a few pedal rotations or a throttle-assist in which it features a dedicated accelerator capable of powering the bike with or without a rider pedaling.  Like non-motored bikes, there are many different types of e-bikes including electric commuters, electric mountain bikes, and electric road bikes, as well as compact, folding models.  Our top pick, the Priority Embark, wowed us thanks to its wide, grippy tires, smooth ride, and the fact it needs hardly any routine maintenance to keep it running in top shape.  Over the...
By KATHY BERDAN, St. Paul Pioneer Press ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — “You can make it as easy or hard as you like.” Sounds like a mobster threat from a vintage noir movie, but Eric Weber is talking about riding a pedal-assist electric bicycle. Weber recently launched Port Of Hastings Outfitters, an electric bike rental business in Hastings. The 2003 Hastings High School grad has a trailer outfitted with charging outlets and a fleet of 12 electric bikes. He meets customers in a parking lot near the riverside trail in Hastings. As the Summer of Nothing To Do winds down and restlessness grows, Weber’s venture offers a chance to get out and try something new, he tells the St. Paul...
The SWIND EB-01 is one of the most powerful electric bikes on the planet, with top speeds of more than 60mph. Indeed, it’s got so much va-va-voom that it wouldn’t be allowed on British roads, where the top legal speed for e-bikes is a stately 15.5mph. But this does go some way towards explaining how Simon Cowell ended up with his back broken in three places at the weekend after falling off his new toy. It has been claimed the ‘impact missed his spinal cord by about a centimetre’, a factor that spelled the difference between life in a wheelchair and the ability to walk again. But this does go some way towards explaining how Simon Cowell (pictured) ended up...
Citi Bike’s fleet of pedal-assist e-bikes has barely grown since its February launch despite a pledge to put “thousands” on city streets by the summer, its parent company admitted on Monday. Lyft now promises only “hundreds” of e-bikes this summer, Gothamist first reported — a marginal increase over the 300 or so currently service. Lyft rep Julie Wood told the site the delays were caused by coronavirus-related supply chain issues, as well as limited labor capacity. Lyft laid off 17 percent of its workforce in April. The slowdown comes almost two years after Citi Bike, under previous ownership, introduced 1,000 pedal-assisted electric bikes to its massive 12,000-bike fleet in November 2018. The e-bikes were enormously popular in the few months they...

While many drivers are finally back behind the wheel, others are looking for alternative ways of getting around, either to avoid mass transit or just to get some fresh air. It’s no wonder sales of bicycles have skyrocketed. And many folks are trying out electric bikes. The electric bikes are like traditional two-wheeled bikes that are upgraded with a battery and motor, so you can pedal a lot or a little. Consumer Reports put some e-bikes to the test. Testers looked at several performance factors, including acceleration, handling, and braking. Bicycles with dual-disc brakes perform better in all kinds of weather. Another key consideration is battery range. In Consumer Reports’ tests, with the battery at maximum capacity on...
Lime is relaunching Jump’s electric bike-share service in London in its first move since acquiring the struggling bike brand from Uber. To start out, the bikes will be available to rent in the Uber app only — they will added to the Lime app at a later date “following further systems integration,” Lime said. A few hundred e-bikes will be available at first, and will grow with demand, the company says. Pricing will be £1 unlock and 15 pence per minute after. The bikes will initially be deployed in Camden and Islington. The return of Jump’s e-bikes may come as a surprise to some who were pessimistic about the brand’s survival following Lime’s acquisition in June. The bikes were...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — As we cruise into the summer season, many people are choosing a bicycle to get around town. Now if you’re looking to put a little power in your pedal, CBS3’s Ukee Washington checked out some electric bikes. “It’s freedom, it’s going wherever you want, ” said Brian Hackford, with Keswick Cycle, about the advantages of owning a bike. So why are people so charged up about electric bikes? “Everything that you put into this bike, the motor throws back at you, meaning if you pedal hard, the motor ramps up,” Hackford said. “I think e-bikes are for everybody because if you can ride and have more fun and if you can ride further — I have a...
By Tina Bellon NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York City Council on Thursday approved several bills that will legalize the private use of electric scooters and bicycles in the city's five boroughs, a change long-sought by food delivery workers and transportation advocates. The city will also create a shared electric scooter pilot program that will allow e-scooter companies to apply for permits to operate in the city, with the exception of Manhattan. E-scooter companies have long complained about not being allowed to operate in the largest U.S. city, with more than eight million residents, while permitted in dozens of other U.S. cities. The pilot program is scheduled to start by May 2021 and is expected to last no more...
The City Council is set to approve legislation Thursday that will finally legalize electric bikes and scooters in New York City. The three bills will legalize bicycles with electric motors that can travel up to 25 mph and scooters that can travel up to 20 mph across the Big Apple — and would require the Department of Transportation to set up a Citi Bike-style e-scooter share pilot program outside of Manhattan. “With the legalization of e-bikes that travel only up to 25 mph, and restrictions on impoundment to those e-bikes that don’t meet this standard, our delivery workers, who provided an essential service during the coronavirus pandemic, will feel safer in their daily work, supporting their families,” said Councilman Fernando...
Rad Power Bikes, one of the top electric bike manufacturers in the US, is out with a new slimmed- and stripped-down city commuter called the RadMission Electric Metro Bike. This bike is no frills, with a single-speed drivetrain, a torquey 500W geared hub motor, and a battery that’s somehow smaller than Rad Power Bikes’ regular packs but just as powerful. But the real shocker is the price. The Seattle-based company, which is known for its value-based prices, is offering the RadMission at an introductory price of $999 — its cheapest model yet. That’s about $500 less than most of Rad Power Bikes’ lineup. (No word yet on what the regular, non-introductory price will be.) the real shocker is the price...
