A scammer is sending bogus emails from the US Small Business Administration to steal personal information from unsuspecting Americans, the feds have warned. The messages direct potential victims to a malicious webpage disguised as an SBA website that the “unknown malicious cyber actor” uses to steal credentials, according to an alert from the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. The alleged scam is one of several reported attempts by cybercriminals to pose as the federal agency tasked with distributing billions of dollars in coronavirus relief loans to struggling businesses. The emails — which have been sent to federal, state and local government officials — are doctored to look like they’re coming from an official SBA account with...
PIKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ) — A new email phishing scam is targeting Maryland’s firearms dealers. Maryland State Police reports the emails pretend to be from the licensing division. On Tuesday, state police was notified of the phishing scam by at least two Maryland regulated firearms dealers. The e-mail looks like its being sent from licensing division employees, but will contain an attachment with a virus. All email addresses used by Maryland State Police end with @maryland.gov. Troopers tell firearms dealers to be sure to verify the email address before opening the email. “Under no circumstances should they open any attachment without verifying that it was received from a valid Maryland State Police email address,” the press release states. By now you're hopefully familiar with the usual advice to avoid phishing attacks: Don't be too quick to download attachments, don't enter passwords or send money somewhere out of the blue, and, of course, don't click links unless you know for sure where they actually lead. You may even scrutinize each sender's email address to make sure that what looks like help@techcompany.com isn't really help@techc0mpany.net. But new research shows that even if you check a sender's address down to the letter, you could still be deceived. At the Black Hat security conference on Thursday, researchers will present "darn subtle" flaws in industry-wide protections used to ensure that emails come from the address they claim to. The study looked at the...

One million customers affected According to the company’s official statement, Ledger became aware of the presence of a vulnerability on the July 14, when a cybersecurity researcher informed him through his bug bounty program. After receiving the researcher’s report, the company says it immediately fixed the breach and launched an internal investigation. Unfortunately, Ledger quickly discovered that the security breach had been operated on June 25, 2020 by a third party, which has gained access to the Company’s marketing database, used to send order confirmations and promotional emails. The scale of the attack is considerable. Indeed, the attacker stole the email addresses of approximately one million customers. For 9,500 of them, information such as name, surname, postal address, telephone...
Phishing is one of the internet’s biggest security risks. That’s when a scammer sends you an email that appears to come from a legitimate source, like your bank or a government agency. There’s usually a Larry Magid (Gary Reyes / Mercury News) link for you to click that takes you to a website that may look exactly like the real one, but it’s designed to trick you into providing information — such as log-in credentials — that can be used for a number of nefarious purposes. President Trump on Wednesday ordered federal officers to Chicago to counter what he called “a rampage of violence.” “The FBI, ATF, DEA, US Marshals Service and Homeland Security will together be sending hundreds of skilled law enforcement officers to Chicago to help drive down violent crime,” Trump said in the White House East Room. “For those people in Chicago and other cities where we’ll be, help is on its way.” The deployment comes as Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot vowed to turn away the feds, with support from Democrats in Washington. Trump said officers would enforce federal laws and seek to partner with local police. Trump said “extreme politicians” have joined an “anti-police crusade,” resulting in “a shocking explosion of...
Meek Mill appeared to address Kanye West’s tweets regarding his 2018 meeting with Kim Kardashian. In tweets that since have been deleted, West, 43, claimed that he had been trying to divorce Kardashian “since Kim met with Meek” at the Waldorf Astoria to discuss “prison reform.” The two had attended a criminal-justice summit at the luxury hotel. West appeared to imply that something inappropriate took place between Kardashian, 39, and Mill, 33, writing, “Meek is my man and was respectful … Kim was out of line.” On Wednesday afternoon, Mill seemed to deny West’s thoughts, tweeting, “S–t is cappp cmon …..” “Cap” is a slang term meaning a lie. Though Kardashian hasn’t directly addressed any of her husband’s claims, she...
A top New York judge may also have been in the cross-hairs of “anti-feminist” lawyer Roy Den Hollander — her photo was found in the car where he killed himself, officials revealed Tuesday. Now, Janet DiFiore, the Empire State’s Chief Judge is being guarded in the wake of the unnerving find, made after Den Hollander fatally shot a New Jersey federal jurist’s son and wounded her husband before taking his own life, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday. “In the car that the body was found they also saw a picture of our Chief Judge Janet DiFiore, her name and her address, so I have directed the state police to provide security for our Chief Judge,” Cuomo told reporters in a...

Maybe the rider or riders failed to wear a helmet, or maybe they were riding on sidewalks or bike lanes. I’ve personally witnessed maniac Revel users in New York City treating the scooters like their own personal go-karts, in many cases at the expense of their own safety. According to an email sent to customers in its New York City market and obtained by the Brooklyn Paper, Revel has suspended more than 1,000 users in the...
Following the recent hijacking of numerous high-profile Twitter accounts, security experts have begun attempting to track down the hackers behind the attack, with some believing they may have an idea who was responsible. Cybercrime journalist Brian Krebs recently published an article on his popular cybersecurity blog KrebsOnSecurity in which he attempts to track down the hackers behind the recent major security breach of Twitter and the hijacking of multiple high profile user accounts, which were used to execute a Bitcoin scam that some estimate generated over $100,000. The accounts hijacked include Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden, Former President Barack Obama, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and the official accounts of ridesharing service Uber and tech...

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday offered no concrete answers to address the recent wave of shootings plaguing the Big Apple — as he dodged questions from every major city newspaper. “[There’s] a lot we need to do to provide more and better options, particularly for young people in Harlem, in Upper Manhattan,” de Blasio told reporters during his daily City Hall press briefing. “We’ll have more to say on that in the next few days, but a lot will be done preparing for this weekend to change the reality on the ground,” de Blasio said. The non-specific comments come amid an ultra-violent uptick in New York that includes a grisly Fourth of July holiday weekend in which at least...
Recently, a friend sent me a preview of a book that she was about to have published and asked me to read it. I was delighted — but unfortunately, the copy she sent was formatted as a PDF file. And as many of us know, reading a PDF on a smartphone or even on an ebook reader is a recipe for eyestrain. I spent a frustrating three days squinting at my screen until somebody reminded me that you can email a PDF file to your Amazon account, and it will convert the file to Amazon’s .Mobi format, making the document much easier to read on a phone or a Kindle. It worked like a charm. There are a few...
Two weeks ago, longtime software engineer Kenton Varda got an email that wasn't meant for him. It was from AT&T Mexico to a customer named Jorge, whose most recent phone bill was attached. You've probably gotten an email intended for someone else at least once. But then Varda got another AT&T Mexico bill for Gloria. And then a third for Humberto, who is overdue on paying more than 6,200 pesos, about $275. To Varda, the incident wasn't a surprise. As the owner of the email account temporal@gmail.com, he gets dozens of messages a day from Spanish-speakers around the world, all sent by people who thought they could use his address as a dummy input: "Temporal" translates to "temporary." Varda...
Apple on Monday officially split from longtime chip-provider Intel during its Worldwide Developers Conference. The iPhone-maker, which has since 2006 sourced its processors for Mac computers from the company, announced the long-awaited move to its own house-designed chips during its WWDC keynote address, the Wall Street Journal reported. Apple already uses its own processor designs in iPhones and iPads, and with Monday’s announcement moved its full suite of products in-house. The WWDC keynote is normally delivered in front of a crowd of thousands, but is being held virtually this year for the first time ever due to the coronavirus pandemic. The processors that California-based Apple is developing have been shown to perform better than Intel’s chips, according to reports. Apple is...
As cop shows continue to be put under the microscope, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Jamie Gray Hyder hopes the long-running NBC drama will address the ongoing protests against police brutality. The show could feature “some of our officers standing up against the issues that are in the public right now because you’re not really seeing that side of things,” the series newbie — who joined the show last season as Officer Katriona “Kat” Azar Tamin — suggested during a recent interview with Page Six. “Even if it’s fictional … what would these so-called ‘good cops’ that people keep claiming exist do in a system that was more open to hearing from them?” Hyder, 35, said, adding: “We...
