Another great one is streaming the Chesapeake Film Festival virtually. The 13th annual event arrives free of charge this Thursday to Sunday. “Once we realized we were going to go virtual, [we] thought, you know what, let’s just provide this festival as a gift,” festival board member Irene Magafan told WTOP. “A lot of people are struggling financially. Why do we want to charge people for this?” This year’s slate includes 45 independent narrative, documentary and short films. “We’ve always known this to be a grassroots festival,” Magafan said....
Traffic is always a problem in the Bay Area, but October is bringing the kind of gridlock a film fan can only dream of. Instead of Carmageddon, we get FilmFestageddon — 10-plus Bay Area film fests in one month. What spurred the film festival gridlock? Look no further than COVID-19, the pandemic that shuttered movie theaters in March and derailed the normal film fest calendar. San Jose’s Cinequest and San Francisco’s CAAMFest, for example, had to regroup and reconfigure and are returning this month with online screenings that were supposed to play in theaters last spring. Others, including the Mill Valley Film Festival, are sticking to their original schedule. Here’s a guide of what’s out there. Cinequest/Cinejoy Showcase The skinny:...
The Berlin International Film Festival is finally acknowledging its founder’s Nazi past. Alfred Bauer, who launched the German movie fest 69 years ago, had close ties to the country’s Nazi regime and produced propaganda, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Berlinale festival released the findings of an independent study of Bauer’s past this week, commissioned with the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History after local media reports in February questioned his legacy. “The new and now scientifically researched findings about Alfred Bauer’s responsibilities in the Reichsfilmintendanz and his behavior in the denazification process are startling,” festival executive director Mariette Rissenbeek said of the revelations. “Nevertheless, they constitute an important element in the process of dealing with the Nazi past of cultural...

BERLIN (AP) — A study has concluded that the founding director of the Berlin International Film Festival made a “not insignificant” contribution to the German film system under Nazi rule and later covered up his role, festival organizers said Wednesday. Alfred Bauer led the “Berlinale” from 1951 to 1976, building the festival into a major draw for then-West Berlin. It is now one of the major European film festivals, along with Cannes and Venice. In January, the festival suspended a prize named for Bauer after German newspaper Die Zeit reported that he was a senior figure in the Nazis’ moviemaking bureaucracy. It said it hadn’t previously been aware of Bauer having held an important position during the Nazi era and...

This year has not been a normal year for movies – or for film festivals, either. Truth be told, we're lucky to have any kind of film festival during the year of COVID-19 — and after months of lockdown, virtually streaming films, press conferences and filmmaker talks doesn't seem all that odd. What's more, because this year's New York Film Festival has gone virtual, audiences from around the country can partake in its offerings, which wasn't the case when screenings were limited to theatres in Manhattan. In addition to online offerings, many films are also being shown at "drive-in" venues in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, allowing for proper social distancing.  With no competition or awards getting in the way,...

The coveted Golden Lion awards were being handed out Saturday night before a masked audience conspicuously lacking in Hollywood star power, given coronavirus travel restrictions kept all but a few American productions away from Venice. Eighteen films were vying for the top awards in the main competition, including a record eight directed by women. Cate Blanchett headed the main jury. That the 10-day festival happened at all was hardly a given, after northern Italy...
NEW YORK (AP) — In a film festival season that’s been turned largely virtual, Spike Lee’s “American Utopia,” a documentary of David Byrne’s concert musical and the opening-night film of the Toronto International Film Festival, has nevertheless supplied the giddy rush of live performance in a packed house. The film was shot during the late 2019-early 2020 run of Byrne’s acclaimed Broadway show at the Hudson Theatre. In it, Byrne deconstructs the traditional rock concert, sketching a narrative through his songbook from familiar Talking Heads classics up to his 2018 solo album of the same name. With 11 other musicians, all of them barefoot and dressed in silvery gray suits, Byrne gathers together a jubilant march on a road...

VENICE—It took two full hours to stop thinking about Kyle Rankin’s 109-minute masterful mindfuck called Run Hide Fight, named after the mantra kids are taught to remember in order to survive school shootings in America.  But the film is surprisingly not really about school shootings. It doesn’t even have an anti-gun slant, and instead opens with a scene of a teenage girl, in mourning over the loss of her mother, shooting a deer under her father’s delicate guidance.  The setup is risky. The exploitation of the epidemic of school shootings in the U.S. still feels far too raw to use as the context for an action-thriller. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, school shootings have dropped considerably, and perhaps this...

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Associated Press On the eve of its first event, the Toronto Film Festival has made a last-ditch U-turn on its controversial policy that would have allowed attendees to remove their face masks while watching films.  Festival organizers took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to tell all attendees that the festival — which is offering both in-person and virtual screenings — will now require all festival-goers to wear face coverings during physical screenings. "As no food or beverage will be consumed on-site," organizers wrote, "TIFF requires that masks are worn for the entirety of the time patrons are in TIFF Bell Lightbox, including while seated during screenings."  A recent surge in new COVID-19...

Tilda Swinton is taking the humble face mask to high-fashion heights at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, where nose and mouth coverings are required as part of the event’s pandemic-era precautions — as are temperature checks and social distancing. At the festival’s opening ceremony on Wednesday, the 59-year-old Oscar winner hit the red carpet in a black-and-white Chanel Haute Couture look and carrying a sculptural gold mask by James Merry that was more about fashion than function. Free advice to anyone who feels adrift these days: put Tilda Swinton in charge of your life. Blanchett, who is heading the jury at the virus-restricted Venice Film Festival, arrived on the Lido wearing a surgical mask and skipped the typical water taxi photo op that stars have long used. Both were evidence of the safety and social distancing norms that have added a certain degree of sobriety to the usually glamorous festival, the first international in-person film showcase after COVID-19 shut down the film industry in March. A spot in competition at the Venice Film Festival can launch careers and Oscar winners, but in recent years, films directed by women have been mostly excluded from vying for the coveted Golden Lion. ROME (AP) — Venice is reclaiming its place as a top cultural destination with the opening of the Venice Film Festival — the first major in-person cinema showcase of the coronavirus era after Cannes canceled and other international festivals opted to go mostly online this year. But don’t be fooled. The 77th edition of the world’s oldest film festival will look nothing like its predecessors. While the network, which is known for its cheesy-romantic holiday fare, reversed its stance and put the ad back on the air, the uproar resonated with Abit. “I realized my movie has all of the elements that Hallmark looks for,” the 35-year-old Queens native told The Post. “But it’s gritty and urban. Also, the leads are black and Latino. And the real romance is between two women.” In “A New York Christmas Wedding,” which is playing online through Sunday as part of the American...
Frameline’s virtual film festival in September is anything but a drag even though the Sept. 17 opener features drag queens galore and has a naughty word in its title.
