Thanks to Dev Davis for new fire station The city of San Jose recently broke ground for a new fire station located on Lincoln Avenue next to the Willow Glen Community Center. On Monday, firefighters worked to keep the blaze away from neighborhoods on the fire’s northern side. New evacuation orders were issued near Colby Ranch and Hidden Springs. As the blaze once again advanced on Mount Wilson, fire crews on Tuesday torched brush along roads, etching a charred perimeter to protect the observatory and the billion-dollar-plus in communications equipment atop Mount Wilson.  Aircraft also continued making water drops in hopes of taming the flames. The national forest said Los Angeles County residents would see a large plume of smoke near Mount Wilson as part of a defensive operation to keep the...
It wouldn’t take much for the remote Mendocino County town of Covelo to be cut off completely from the rest of the world. “There’s one paved road, one power line, one phone line and one cell tower,” said longtime resident Lew Chichester, one of the founders of the town’s all-volunteer radio station, KYBU Round Valley Radio. “There are also no fire hydrants here, because there’s no water system and everybody’s on a well.” So when the August Complex Fire (now the largest wildfire in California history) began inching closer and closer to Round Valley this month, the community understandably grew worried. And their worry turned into panic last week when the skies suddenly turned “dark as night,” prompting Chichester to...

POINT REYES STATION, Calif. —  With evacuation warnings still in place, smoke from back burn fires drifted out of the oaks and pines above the tiny town of Point Reyes Station in Marin County on Friday, mixing with thick, coastal fog until the two were indistinguishable to most people. But Amanda Eichstaedt, general manager of KWMR, the local public radio station, easily saw the difference. Like most topics related to this quixotic town of about 400 that abuts the West Coast’s only National Seashore, she was happy to share her knowledge — with everyone in about a 20-mile radius. “We know that people totally rely on the radio,” she said of this Arcadian territory, where cellphones are spotty on...

The fire will be extinguished, but a community has been changed for a lifetime. I just hope we don't find the fire took more than homes and buildings. I pray everyone got out in time," Myers said in...
