Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., this week warned he has “grave concerns” over North Carolina’s mail-in voting process after several tentative changes were made, including allowing more time for ballots to arrive after Election Day in November. “I have said in the last two debates that I trusted the absentee ballot system in North Carolina, until yesterday,” Tillis said on a radio show, according to the News & Observer of Raleigh. “And now, I have grave concerns about North Carolina Board of Elections, non-legislators." Tillis said the board of elections has “undermined the integrity of the process in North Carolina. It’s a sad day.” NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF ELECTIONS MEMBERS RESIGN OVER 'CHANGES' TO MAIL-IN BALLOT LAW JUST BEFORE ELECTION  U.S....
Black North Carolina voters are seeing their ballots rejected at twice the rate of white residents in North Carolina, a study by a University of Florida (UF) elections expert reported. Black voters in the state are seeing around four percent of ballots rejected. Voter advocates say this is because a higher proportion of Black voters are voting by mail for the first time, leading to minor mistakes that nullify votes. The data was collected by the U.S. Elections Project and managed by Michael McDonald, a UF professor who specializes in American elections. The race of voters is disclosed in the data because voters can list their race when registering in North Carolina. Elections officials report the three most common mistakes...
A pair of state elections board members in North Carolina resigned this week after a lawsuit settlement pushed by the Democratic-controlled board that would tweak absentee ballot law to make ballot harvesting easier. Ballot harvesting, or the practice of allowing political operatives and others to collect voters’ ballots and turn them in en masse to polling stations, has drawn bipartisan concerns of fraud from election watchers. Ken Raymond and David Black were the only two Republican members on the board that has been split 3-2. Notice of their resignations was submitted Wednesday night. By BRYAN ANDERSON, Associated Press/Report for America RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Supreme Court ruled on Friday that three death row inmates will have their sentences reduced to life in prison through the state's now-defunct Racial Justice Act. The 2009 law allowed death row inmates to go through an appeals process to receive life without parole if they could prove racial bias was the reason or a significant factor in their original death sentence. North Carolina Republican state lawmakers amended the law in 2012 and then repealed it a year later. The state Supreme Court decided in June that the repeal could not be applied retroactively, which paved the way for more than 100 prisoners awaiting execution to...
By GARY D. ROBERTSON and SCOTT BAUER, Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — As the pandemic prompts a surge in voting by mail, voters in a handful of states, including the presidential battlegrounds of North Carolina and Wisconsin, are facing a requirement that already is tripping up thousands — the need to have a witness sign their ballot envelope. A lack of a witness signature or other witness information has emerged as the leading cause of ballots being set aside before being counted in North Carolina, with problems disproportionately affecting Black voters in the state, according to an Associated Press analysis of state election data. The Winston-Salem Journal reported Thursday that the state had 12,591 claims for the week that ended Sept. 19. The number is slightly down from a revised 13,437 the previous week. Since the pandemic began, the highest weekly total for unemployment insurance claims in North Carolina has been 172,745. That was for the week that ended March 28. WSOCTV reports that 25-year-old Darius Sessoms was arrested the day after the shooting and charged with murder. It is believed he allegedly “walked up to Cannon while the boy was playing outside with his siblings and shot him in the head.” The Blaze reports that the killing occurred in front of “Cannon’s 7-year-old and 8-year-old siblings.” ABC 11 reports that Sessoms is being held in jail without bond, and that 21-year-old Aolani Takemi Pettit was arrested Tuesday of this week and charged with “felony accessory after the fact.” The Blaze reported that Pettit “allegedly helped Sessoms flee from police before...
During an interview in the hotly-contested battleground state of North Carolina, former Vice President and current Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden delivered a quick but punchy riff on President Donald Trump’s physical and mental fitness. On Wednesday, the former VP gave a trio of local interviews in North Carolina — where Biden holds a slim lead in the polling average — including with anchor Cullen Browder of NBC affiliate WRAL. Browder asked Biden to respond to a series of ads that are running in the state, some of which question the candidate’s mental and physical fitness. “For those North Carolina voters who buy into that, who may question whether you’re physically, mentally fit for this job, how do you...
Both Republicans on the five-person North Carolina State Board of Elections submitted their resignations on Wednesday night, saying they were misled about the ramifications of the board's recent legal settlement making rules governing absentee ballots less restrictive. "Regarding the settlement agreement with the plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed by the North Carolina Alliance for Retired Americans against the State Board of Elections, attorneys from [Attorney General] Josh Stein’s office did not advise us of the fact that a lot of the concessions made in the settlement have already been denied in a prior case by a federal judge and another case by a state court three-judge panel," Ken Raymond, who had served on the board since 2018, wrote in his resignation letter. North Carolina could move into its third phase of reopening next week if COVID-19 trends remain stable, Gov. Roy Cooper said Tuesday. In the meantime, Cooper said large entertainment venues should prepare to reopen at 7% capacity Oct. 2, giving them time to put safety precautions in place. "We will continue analyzing our data and indicators as we determine how to move forward safely in other areas that may be included in the new order on Oct. 2," Cooper said. "In it, we hope to ease some other restrictions, while still keeping safety protocols like masks, social distancing and mass gathering limits in place." Cooper's current executive order, signed Sept. 4, moved the state into phase 2.5...
Election polling in North Carolina shows President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in a tight race, with Biden leading by just over a point.
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden will be in Charlotte, North Carolina, Wednesday for a campaign appearance. Prior to boarding a plane for the event, Biden wouldn’t say if he is vetting a list of potential Supreme Court picks. But he says Democrats should be campaigning on the issue as voters get ready to make their choice this November. He told reporters Wednesday that Democrats should “go to the American people, make the case why this is a gigantic mistake and abuse of power.” He said if there were another conservative justice on the court, the Affordable Care Act could be overturned and healthcare cost protections for women could be eliminated. Biden has said he won’t release...

(AP) — Called both a legal “rock star” by Republican senators and an “ideological extremist” by critics, Allison Jones Rushing had already landed what most lawyers would consider a career-defining position before turning 40. But the Trump administration may have even bigger plans. President Donald Trump indicated that Rushing is on his short list of four or five nominees to succeed the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the U.S. Supreme Court. Confirmed just 18 months ago to the federal appeals bench, Rushing's relatively short legal experience, previous work with a conservative Christian legal group and litigation involving civil rights issues are sure to stoke Democrats and their allies to fight her...

Democrats won major concessions on Tuesday from state election authorities in North Carolina, who agreed to their demands to relax the rules on mail-in ballots. In an agreement filed with the courts in North Carolina, the plaintiffs — a coalition of Democrat-aligned interest groups — agreed to settle their lawsuit against the state in return for allowing ballots to be counted up to nine days after Election Day; allowing voters to “cure” problems with submitted ballots; and creating ballot “drop-off” stations. The motion for a consent decree states (citations included): As set forth in the Consent Judgment and in the exhibits thereto, (Numbered Memos 2020-19, 2020-22, and 2020-23), all ballots postmarked by Election Day shall be counted if otherwise eligible...

With less than 50 days until Election Day, progressive groups are investing millions into voter registration, education and mobilization efforts in battleground states amid the coronavirus pandemic.  These groups do not claim to be affiliated with either political party but are clear in their desire to prevent President Trump from being re-elected in 2020. Touting a progressive agenda, these groups aim to educate voters about the political process and walk them through voting step-by-step amid the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, most of the local-based groups have been organizing in  states long before the 2020 election cycle.  In some cases, the ground game efforts of these progressive groups have been in the making for more than a decade. North Carolina football’s defense outshined Sam Howell vs. Syracuse football. The defense of North Carolina football, not Sam Howell, is why the Tar Heels won big on Saturday. As the No. 18 team in the country, the North Carolina Tar Heels had no issues putting away Dino Babers’ Syracuse football team in the early window, winning 31-6. While the offenses largely sputtered throughout most of it, it was the North Carolina defense that gave Tar Heel Nation a lot to be excited about going forward, especially because it knows Howell will inevitably play better. How unpopular is gun control in states with contested Senate races? Ask Everytown for Gun Safety, a firearm prohibition lobby backed by billionaire Michael Bloomberg. They’re spending big piles of Bloomberg’s cash running campaign ads to flip Senate seats in Iowa and North Carolina. But for a gun control advocacy group, their messaging is suspiciously silent on, well, gun control. So much for having the courage of their convictions. According to a June article in the New York Times, Everytown bought $15 million worth of digital advertising in a bid to influence political contests this fall in eight states, among them U.S. Senate races in Iowa and North Carolina.
