A strategy meeting of a Massachusetts-based drug company played a much greater role in spreading the novel coronavirus than previously believed, a new study finds. The international Biogen Inc conference, held at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf hotel in late February, led to roughly 20,000 cases of COVID-19 across the US in two months. On a personal note: This column was extraordinarily enjoyable to write. It feels like months since the Hotline last dove deep into a football-y football topic. Feels like, because it has been. Since the coronavirus shutdown began, we have attempted to cover every angle, from academic instruction models to testing timelines; hypothetical schedules, projected schedules and real schedules: player safety and presidential power shifts; positive test results, justifications for football, the Greek Row factor and player boycotts. Oh, and a loan program. Everything, really, but traditional football topics. Of course, traditional football topics weren’t relevant football topics when we didn’t know if there would be a season. And we still don’t know, but at least we have a schedule to obsess over. Starting with the...
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports LeBron James is celebrating his Los Angeles Lakers clinching the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference even though the home-court advantage is virtually meaningless inside the NBA bubble. James told the Los Angeles Times that he'll "enjoy this one" because skeptics "said I couldn't do it." The 16-time NBA All-Star spent the first 15 years of his career playing in the Eastern Conference, which has been regarded as the less competitive of the two in recent years. This season marks the first time the King has dominated out West, suggesting that his success was not dependent on competing against weaker opponents in the East. However, the conference-only schedule will also provide some of the best uniforms matchups of the season. With that in mind, here are the top five football uniforms in the SEC.5. The NBA will finally return on Thursday, and with it, the myriad storylines, trends, and stakes of a season nearly five months in limbo. Along with the return of the game’s familiar rhythms will also come changes for many teams — in style, feel, appearance, and tactical alignment. As rotations shift — and eventually clarify — the following five players could find themselves in expanded and critical roles for teams with lofty ambitions inside the bubble. Why won’t Notre Dame’s football program join a conference? Why does it insist on remaining independent while other Notre Dame athletic programs compete in the ACC? These questions are asked on a perpetual basis, especially in the context of scheduling and College Football Playoff debates. But Notre Dame’s football program has a simple reason for remaining independent. Because it can. Some might call it opportunistic business. Others might call it arrogance. But the truth is Notre Dame football’s brand is strong enough to warrant national attention every year, and the program knows it. NBC knows it, too, which is why the cable network broadcasts all Fighting Irish home football games and reportedly pays Notre Dame $15 million per year...

The Catholic Church raked in at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed loans meant to help small businesses survive the coronavirus pandemic, a new report says. Catholic dioceses, parishes, schools and other entities made extensive use of a loophole in the feds’ Paycheck Protection Program to snag at least 3,500 forgivable loans as the pandemic scuttled worship services across the country, an Associated Press review found. Some $200 million went to roughly 40 dioceses that have paid out hundreds of millions of dollars to victims of sexual abuse in recent years — including the Archdiocese of New York, which got at least $28 million for its executive offices while its iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral received at least $1 million, according...

The dream, of course, is to start on time and play through the fall … straight through the fall … with no disruptions or abbreviations, no suspensions or delays or forfeitures. Any takers? Didn’t think so. The Hotline was always skeptical of 12-game, on-time start, even during the best of these bad times, back in May, when case counts were low and optimism was rising. But as we survey the landscape in early July — even though positive tests are limited in the Pac-12 and we’re unaware of any college football player requiring hospitalization for Covid-19 — the rising curves in big states have cast doubt on the sport’s viability for the fall. The virus is on offense, and it’s...
