Trump trails Biden in national opinion polls ahead of the Nov. 3 election, but is trying to make up ground in Minnesota, a state he lost by about 1.5 percentage points to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Biden toured a union carpenter training center in Hermantown, a suburb of the Lake Superior port city of Duluth, and painted a grim picture of the economic situation in Minnesota’s iron ore mining region, saying the coronavirus...

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to 860,000 but still remains at historically high levels amid the coronavirus pandemic.  New claims for state unemployment benefits totaled 860,000 in the week ending September 12, according to the latest figures released by the Labor Department on Thursday.  Those figures are a decrease of 33,000 from the week prior.  While claims for jobless benefits dropped last week, they are still more than four times their level at the beginning of the year.  Before the pandemic ravaged the economy, the number signing up for jobless aid had never exceeded 700,000 in a week - even in the depths of the 2007-2009 Great Recession.  New claims for state unemployment...

I finally finished season four of “The Wire,” and it was outstanding. As always, I’ll keep this free of spoilers because it’d be hard to enjoy “The Wire” if I just ruined it for you. Having said that, season four was incredible and depressing all at the same time. (REVIEW: ‘Westworld’ Season 3 Ends With The Possible Deaths Of Multiple Characters) It’s also very different from the first three seasons of the hit HBO show. Without giving too much away, we don’t see as much of McNaulty in this season. I found that to be a weird choice from the writers. He was the main character for the first three seasons, and he’s more or less relegated to the...
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden destroyed President Donald Trump as a “climate arsonist” while wildfires rage across the West Coast, faulting him for failing to take responsibility while blaming him for ignoring disasters in blue states. “Too often, the brunt falls disproportionately on communities of color, exacerbating the need for environmental justice,” Biden said. “These interlocking crises of our time require action, not denial. It requires leadership, not scapegoating. It requires the president to meet the threshold duty of the office. To care, to care for everyone. To defend us from every attack, seen and unseen. Always and without exception, because here’s the deal, Hurricanes don’t swerve to avoid red states or blue states. Wildfires don’t skip towns that voted a certain way.”...

It’s been nearly four years since the San Francisco Giants’ postseason hopes still felt legitimate in the month of September. After losing 98 games in 2017 and fading down the stretch in each of the past two seasons, the 2020 Giants have won 15 of their last 20 and enter the last two-plus weeks of the schedule with a chance to secure a playoff spot. The Giants haven’t played pressure-packed, must-win games in September since they locked up a Wildcard berth with four straight victories to close out the 2016 season, but the franchise is finally playing meaningful series again. In an abbreviated 60-game season, it’s little surprise there’s a logjam near the back of the National...

Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito threw his second no-hitter of the season last night. He threw his first in MLB The Show 20. Really. Back in April, Giolito (pitching as himself, naturally) horse-collared Detroit’s Niko Goodrum, when Major League Baseball was running the Players League livestream competition. Last night, Giolito (pitching as himself, again) mowed down the Pittsburgh Pirates, with a 4-0, no-hit shutout. MLB tweeted side-by-side highlights of both feats. In April, he got Dom Thompson-Williams on a bang-bang groundout to second base to seal a no-hitter (but for hitting a batter, it would have been a perfect game). Last night, Erik Gonzalez lined out to right fielder Adam Engel to close it out. The only blemish...

Covid-19 survivors can be reinfected twice, according to doctors in Hong Kong who report the first known case. The healthy 33-year-old patient tested positive for the coronavirus after a mild bout of the disease four months before. Genetic analysis revealed the second infection was caused by a different strain of the coronavirus than the first, after he returned from a trip in Spain. The coronavirus mutates as it spreads round the globe, and these can be detected in genetic sequencing.   Doctors warned their findings prove 're-infection can occur just a few months after recovery'. They said it was likely because immunity is short lives and antibodies against Covid-19 wane quickly. However, the man did not have symptoms of Covid-19 the...

Donald Trump will start his week off in North Carolina Monday as he prepares to speak during the 10:00 p.m. hour all four nights of the Republican National Convention, where he will officially accept his nomination to run for reelection on Thursday. Other than backing Trump, the Republican National Committee has not agreed on any other platform for the 2020 convention as the president is prepared to focus on the accomplishments of his first term rather than presenting plans for a second. In a new resolution adopted Saturday from the previous 2016 platform, the RNC made six declarations and resolved four issues – but otherwise kept the four-year-old platform the same. 'RESOLVED, That the Republican Party has and will continue...
So Donald Trump and co. say they’re going to have an optimistic convention. Optimistic?! About what? Roughly 80 percent of Americans—a percentage that by definition includes millions of Republicans—think the country’s headed in the wrong direction. Optimism will really tap into the national mood. I’ll believe it when I see it. Trump—who, of course, is speaking all four nights, and probably wants a Charles Foster Kane-sized poster of himself as backdrop—doesn’t do optimism. He does carnage.  And he does lies. Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies. Behind nationally by 8 or 10 points and by 5 to 7 points in most key swing states, he has to win back a certain percentage of white suburban voters. He’s not going to do...
On the eve of the Republican National Convention, it’s worth noting that no one has made a greater case for reelecting Donald Trump — if not adding him to the lineup at Mount Rushmore — than the president himself. The Golden State Killer was wheeled into court to face 16 of his victims Tuesday, the first of four days of hearings before he is sentenced to life in prison. Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., 74, in June pleaded guilty to all 13 counts of murder, 13 counts of kidnapping, and confessed to 161 uncharged crimes - many of which were rapes - which go back beyond the statute of limitations.  The daughter of one victim, Patricia Murphy, told the court: 'He is an evil monster with no soul. He is subhuman.'  His sentencing, expected Friday after three days of testimony from his victims and survivors, brings to an end a sinister, decades-long saga of kidnappings, rapes and murders.  The 74-year-old,...

Minority Americans with coronavirus are being hospitalized at far greater rates compared to their share of states' populations.  Researchers found that, in 12 states, there were sizeable disparities in the prevalence of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, among blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans.  In Ohio, for example, about one-third of all people hospitalized with the virus were African-American, despite them making up less one-fifth of the state's population.   The team, from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, says there are several reasons for these inequalities including higher rates of pre-existing conditions like obesity and less access to healthcare compared to white residents.  A new study from the University of Minnesota found...
