CHICAGO (CBS) — It’s a new level of clean for United’s planes. And it’s already happening at O’Hare. It’s a long-lasting anti-microbial solution that once it dries, it forms little needles that puncture microbes. United plans to spray it on all its planes every seven days. That’s on top of the usual disinfecting sprays between almost every flight. United already uses it at O’Hare and plans to roll it out at other airports in the coming months. Peep our friendly new deep-cleaning robot, NovaRover! ✨ Its working hard to keep our planes clean with an antimicrobial spray, which forms a long-lasting protective barrier on aircraft surfaces. HP debuted a value-priced Omen Vector wired gaming mice earlier this summer, but the new Vector Wireless is the company’s high-end option. It’s $99.99 and is available starting today in the US. What stands out about the Vector Wireless is its USB-C charging port that, beyond being convenient, allows for very fast charging speeds. HP claims that 30 seconds is all the charging time it needs to get an hour of battery life. Also according to HP, five minutes of charging time should be enough for it to last through an entire day, while 15 minutes will get you 30 hours of performance. It supposedly takes 90 minutes to fully charge the mouse, yielding up to 180 hours of battery...
Permanent job losses rose sharply in August, the Labor Department said in its monthly employment report Friday, suggesting that the risk of a long-lasting recession is rising. The number of permanent job losers soared to 3.4 million in August, according to the Labor Department, up from roughly 2.9 million the month before. Earlier in the pandemic, the vast majority of job losses were classified as temporary. Tens of millions of retail workers, bartenders, restaurant servers, and movie theater workers were sent home with the hope that they could be called back. In the best-case scenario, those workers would have been kept afloat with federal government relief and then returned to their old jobs in a matter of weeks...
Coronavirus antibodies could last for at least four months and fade more slowly than previously reported, according to a new study. The findings come from a large-scale survey published Tuesday involving more than 30,500 people in Iceland. Billed as the most comprehensive look at the body’s response to the virus, scientists believe it gives hope to achieve immunity through a vaccine. If a vaccine generates antibodies that are as long-lasting, there is “hope that host immunity to this unpredictable and highly contagious virus may not be fleeting and may be similar to that elicited by most other viral infections,” wrote scientists in an editorial on the study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers are still trying to...
A typical flu vaccine is only about 40 to 60 percent effective - but a new study may help scientists change that at long last.  Researchers at Washington University St Louis developed a method that can check whether a flu shot is targeting the right immune cells to trigger a relatively long-lasting response and block infections.  Their work uncovers one reason why some people who get flu shots may get only partial protection against the virus and suggests a way to make a more effective, longer-lasting vaccine.  It comes as scientists around the world work frantically to develop a long-lasting coronavirus vaccine and warn of the looming danger rof COVID-19 combined with the approaching flu season.  Washington University, St...

The Environmental Protection Agency granted emergency approval Monday for the first long-lasting disinfectant against COVID-19 — which could kill the virus on surfaces for days after cleanings. The product, SurfaceWise 2 from the Texas-based company Allied BioScience, has the technology to deactivate the virus on surfaces for up to a week, ABC News reported. “This initial EPA approval clears the way to effectively protect people against COVID-19 as a residual solution proven to provide long-term, non-toxic surface protection from viruses, including coronaviruses,” Allied BioScience CEO Michael Ruley said in a statement. The disinfectant has been approved for use in Texas with American Airlines, the Texas Methodist Health Group and certain Total Orthopedics Sports & Spine locations. “SurfaceWise2 will make the...
The Environmental Protection Agency has approved the first disinfectant that offers long-lasting protection against the coronavirus, continuously killing the virus on surfaces for seven days. Over the next few months, American Airlines will begin applying the product, known as SurfaceWise2, to the interior of its entire aircraft fleet, close to 1,500 planes, said David Seymour, the company’s chief operating officer. Texas-based Total Orthopedics Sports and Spine Clinics will also use the product at two of its facilities. “This is a groundbreaking step [that is] expected to provide longer-lasting protection in public spaces, increasing consumer confidence and resuming normal air travel and other activities,” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said Monday. Currently, the EPA’s approval only applies in Texas for use on...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The coronavirus pandemic has had a dramatic effect on health care in this country. Perhaps the most serious impact has been on primary care doctors and clinics, many of whom are going closing up for good, CBS2’s Dr. Max Gomez reported Thursday. Primary care is how chronic conditions like diabetes and congestive heart failure are managed, vaccinations are given, and cancer screenings are done. That’s why research shows that access to primary care translates into better health and health outcomes. Lost primary care means increased mortality, decreased quality of life, and, ultimately, much greater costs to the health care system. (CNN)We can't quite say sharks can be friends, but new evidence is showing us that sharks form social bonds with others and can work together — to a degree.Gray reef sharks regularly meet up together in the same groups, according to a new study published on Tuesday in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. And some of those social groups remain stable for periods of up to four years."What is surprising is the level of social stability in these sharks. Protesters gather at Lafayette Square Park outside the White House on May 31, 2020 in Washington, DC.Tasos Katopodis/Getty For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters. There is no more tear gas in front of the White House, where for weeks activists had gathered to protest against racial injustice and police brutality after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police on May 25. Though Washington, DC, demonstrations have slowed down since early June—when police violently cleared protesters from Lafayette Square for Trump’s now-infamous Bible photo shoot—groups like Occupy DC still maintain a presence there. But the atmosphere has changed. Now, activist-led yoga classes and group painting sessions draw sympathetic crowds. And the raw frustration that surged across the...
NEW YORK — What sort of staying power does it take for a protest movement to be judged a success? This year, without a centralized team of senior leaders, perhaps the largest protest movement in U.S. history has been unfolding nationwide since the May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. By some calculations, more than 15 million Americans have taken part — decrying racial injustice, reinforcing the message of Black Lives Matter. There’s no way to know now what the movement’s legacy will be — whether it will wither or compel major breakthroughs in curbing racism and inequality. But at this moment, other major protest movements of the past — both in the United States...

Financial advisers help clients achieve a richer, fuller life — and death. Financial planners often urge clients to envision their passing — and its effect on their loved ones. It’s a grim but necessary part of the job. The fear of death can shut down such conversations. Clients may change the subject and refuse to engage, leaving advisers struggling to broach estate planning, life insurance and other priorities. “All of it is uncomfortable,” said Tracy Sherwood, a certified financial planner in Williamsville, N.Y. “No one wants to think of their untimely demise.” Rather than pressure clients to confront the Grim Reaper, Sherwood prefers to proceed in baby steps. She might begin by asking them to complete advance directive forms....

In states like Oregon, the recent growth in coronavirus cases comes in large part from younger people in their 20s and 30s, who have been contracting the virus at higher rates than the at-risk elderly. That may be because younger people have the perception that they are at lower risk for mortality, and thus are less invested in self-quarantining behavior. Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is trying to quash this popular misconception that younger people simply don’t get very bad cases of coronavirus. Indeed, as the CDC pointed out in a report, many young people are suffering severe long-term health consequences after contracting the disease — even though their over rate of mortality is quite low. In its regular Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the Centers...
The consequences of allowing protesters and rioters to call the shots in big cities like Chicago and Portland, Ore., might not always be predictable, Dr. Ben Carson said Friday during an appearance on "Hannity." "The people should recognize that when you invite anarchists into your neighborhood and you join with them, there's going to be long-lasting destruction that you're going to have to deal with your children and everybody else is going to have to deal with," Carson, who serves as President Trump's secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said. During the interview with guest host Jason Chaffetz, Carson addressed multiple topics, including violence in American cities. He also defended the Trump administration's decision to revoke an Obama-era rule purportedly aimed...

GOP Sen. Susan Collins on Thursday urged the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to “immediately rescind” a new policy that would force foreign students to return home if the courses they are enrolled in are entirely online, calling it “unfair and unrealistic.” Collins, R-Maine, in a letter to Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, called for the extension of an exemption adopted by ICE in March through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. The ICE exemption allowed international students with F-1 visas to attend classes online while retaining their visa status.
