As the manhunt for a suspect in connection with last Saturday's “ambush” shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies continued Thursday, the reward offered for information grew to at least $675,000, the sheriff's department said, according to reports. The deputies, a 31-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man, were in their marked patrol vehicle outside a Metro train station in Compton when the suspect approached the passenger-side window, shot the deputies multiple times and ran from the scene around 7 p.m. The reward grew from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ original authorization of $100,000 because of contributions from the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority -- as well as from private donations, according...

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Dijon Kizzee was shot after he picked up a gun. Capt. Kent Wegener said Thursday that the Aug. 31 shooting, which launched protests that at times turned violent, took place after Kizzee, who is black, bent down and picked up a pistol. This contradicts reports that Kizzee was unarmed at the time that he was shot. Wegener said that officers first attempted to detain Kizzee because of a traffic violation he allegedly perpetrated while riding his bicycle. Kizzee fled the scene, fell, abandoned his bike, and ran from deputies, and officers did not know Kizzee was in possession of a loaded 9mm pistol when they found him, he said. According to...

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview on Tuesday it is “disgusting” that vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has yet to condemn the protesting outside the hospital rooms of police officers who were shot in her state in Los Angeles, California. Loeffler spoke to Breitbart News as Harris has yet to condemn those who were wishing for the death of two Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies. After the two sheriff’s deputies were sent to the hospital, Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters blocked the entrance to the emergency room at a Los Angeles hospital and chanted they hoped the officers died. Loeffler quickly came out and denounced the BLM violence against Los Angeles’s police officers, “BLM...

In August, the Los Angeles Times published a series of stories, videos, graphics and archival materials on the Chicano Moratorium. This series of anti-Vietnam War activism ended with a rally in East Los Angeles on Aug. 29, 1970, that attracted over 20,000 attendees. It started in peace but turned into the biggest, bloodiest disturbance in Los Angeles since Watts five years earlier and led to the death of three people, including pioneering Times columnist Ruben Salazar. The response to our series was overwhelming. Many readers admitted they had never heard of these events even though they were Mexican American or had lived their entire lives in Southern California. The only real complaint was a logistical one: Readers who weren’t subscribers...

Last Friday, when we marked the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, one thing that did not get enough attention was the sacrifice of the police, firefighters and other first responders, hundreds of whom were killed that day. First responders is an apt term for them. They are the people who show up. They knowingly charge into the dangers from which most of us flee. Then on Saturday came the atrocious attempted murder of two Los Angeles County deputy sheriffs in Compton, by an assassin who is still at large. Once again, what is striking is the heroism of the police. It is awesome to see, but it is routine heroism if, like me, you’ve spent lots of time around cops. DEPUTY...
On the first Sunday of September, a work crew showed up alongside the Cattaraugus Tunnel, a highway underpass in Los Angeles, and stacked 66 large boulders along its walls. The rocks appeared in the tunnel, which connects the L.A. neighborhoods of Reynier Village and the Culver City Arts District, without notice or forewarning, leaving residents to discover them on their own. The next day, a local organizer snapped a picture of the scene, writing: “What the absolute fuck is this shit?”  The answer was “hostile architecture,” or urban design features ostensibly deployed to deter crime, but which often serve only to limit where unhoused people can sleep. Before the boulders arrived, the tunnel had been home to at least three...
