New Hampshire officials have started mailing absentee ballots to city and town clerks for the Nov. 3 general election; as of Sept. 22, the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office received nearly 134,000 absentee ballot requests, according to WMUR 9. COVID-19 concerns have caused a significant increase in that number, with state officials having eased absentee voting requirements when the coronavirus outbreak made registered voters reconsider casting their ballots in person. Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan told WMUR 9 that once the clerks receive the absentee ballots, they can send them to voters. The voters, in turn, must complete their ballots and send them back as early as possible. “This is by far the earliest that...
New Hampshire Electric Cooperative is making moves to bring broadband internet to rural parts of the Granite State. Plymouth-based NHEC’s bylaws also could change pending the outcome of a special election in which the co-op’s 84,000 customers received their ballots by mail. Initially critics of the proposed change, the co-op’s leaders have since declared their support, the Concord Monitor reported. “That would be important not only to greenlight their own plans, which are pretty ambitious ... but might even have an effect beyond the co-op’s service area,” Richard Knox, a member of a broadband advocacy group, told the Monitor. “The entry of the co-op into broadband would have a good effect on other internet service providers – they...

President Trump's pitch to win New Hampshire and its many independent voters includes an appeal to law and order that the campaign hopes will edge out his Democratic rival Joe Biden in a state that was a "near-miss" in the last election. Trump lost the state to Hillary Clinton by a 0.4% margin in 2016, with 47.62% of the vote to Trump's 47.25%. Only one state, Michigan, was decided by a smaller margin, that one in Trump's favor. Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien pointed to New Hampshire last month as among a handful of states, including Minnesota, Nevada, and Maine, that could be pegged as "near-misses" last cycle. "He lost by 1,700 votes in New Hampshire," Stepien said in...

The state of education in New Hampshire in the age of COVID-19 is a tale of two opposites. Public schools throughout the Granite State are struggling to keep students, while its private schools are enjoying an increase in enrollment. Building Block Commons in Exeter is among the bevy of private schools that are taking the coronavirus in stride. With a student body of 100, social distancing would not be a problem. Teachers have ample amounts of personal protection equipment to use, and classrooms have been upgraded to ensure good air flow and hygiene. Schools like BBC began to appear more appealing to parents who are leery about the more crowded public schools during the ongoing public...
