MIAMI (AP) – Ryan Fitzpatrick emerged early Friday from the Miami Dolphins’ first victorious locker room of the year wearing a tropical print shirt adorned with purple pineapples as a complement to his beachcomber beard. It was a Dad shirt, which is OK because the 37-year-old Fitzpatrick has seven kids. “Being the elder statesman on the team, I’ve adopted more of the senior citizen look in terms of some of the touristy shirts, and my waistband is sitting a little higher than it used to,” Fitzpatrick said. “But I do like the color; I like the flair.” Fitzpatrick doesn’t look like the prototypical NFL quarterback, and that’s true even after the ball is snapped. His style resembled a sandlotter Thursday...
Last year, Oklahoma wasn’t fully focused on Kansas State. After the Sooners left Manhattan with a stunning loss that nearly cost them a shot at the College Football Playoff, there will be no such problem this year. Third-ranked Oklahoma will host the Wildcats on Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. “I think the concern stems from me turning on the film from a year ago and watching us get completely outplayed by that program,” Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said. “And so, it took all of one game to earn complete respect for that coaching staff and how they play.” Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler remembers how the Sooners fell behind by 18 points and rallied before losing...
Protesters in Louisville, Ky., confronted a group of armed militia members Thursday as the city prepares for a second night of demonstrations over the death of Breonna Taylor. A group of Black Lives Matter supporters were marching through the downtown area when some of them confronted armed counter-protesters, some of whom were dressed in military-style clothing and holding long guns, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. One of the counter-protesters told the newspaper he was from North Carolina and was part of the Oath Keepers. On its website, the group described itself as a non-partisan association of current and former police officers, military members and first responders who pledge to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE...
Reuters September 24, 2020 0 Comments Louisville braced for a second night of unrest on Thursday after two policemen were shot and wounded during protests over a grand jury’s decision not to bring homicide charges against any of the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor. Police Chief Robert Schroeder, whose department has been reinforced with state police officers and Kentucky National Guard troops to help enforce a nighttime curfew, said he expected demonstrations to go on through the weekend and for some time. The two police officers shot on Wednesday were expected to recover, he said, and a suspect was taken into custody, one of 127 people arrested during the protests, most for curfew violations or...
After hinting at possible impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday said she is not considering another inquiry, Fox News reported. “I don’t think he’s worth the trouble at this point,” she told reporters on the one-year anniversary of her announcement of the first probe. Pelosi floated the possible second impeachment during a Sunday interview on ABC News’ This Week. Her hint came amid the Republican Party’s push to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which has been met with fierce backlash from Democrats. On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pushed back on Pelosi’s hint at another attempt at impeaching Trump. “I will make you this one promise, listening to the speaker...

Getty Trevon Diggs Make that three Dallas Cowboys cornerbacks on the trainer’s table. As if losing Anthony Brown (IR, ribs) until Week 5 and Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) for “multiple weeks” wasn’t bad enough, the Cowboys are now contending with an injury to impressive rookie Trevon Diggs. Diggs was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday’s Week 3 practice report due to an unspecified shoulder issue. It is somewhat of a mystery as to how, or when, Diggs was injured — a disturbing theme in this young Dallas season. ESPN’s Todd Archer reported the second-round corner “was in full uniform and on the field during the portion of practice open to the media,” and he seemingly emerged unscathed from last...
Dylan GoudgeAs the arduous process continues for the replacement of Line 3, there are many of us in northern Minnesota who are equally as concerned as Julia Nerbonne of Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light. We are concerned about our voices being heard, about the safety and future of our communities, and about our prospects for quality employment. For years we have watched and waited as the most studied and reviewed pipeline project in Minnesota has been protested and delayed, often for reasons that courts have, thankfully, said were wrong. Recent events in Minnesota, across our nation and in our backyard have us equally distressed by the condition of our social fabric and our ability to treat one another with respect...

The Seattle Seahawks defense continues to get bitten by the injury bug, with the latest coming on Sunday night. On Sunday night, the Seattle Seahawks managed to squeak out the 38-35 victory over the New England Patriots. While everyone’s attention was focused on the tremendous NFL quarterback battle between Russell Wilson and Cam Newton, what might’ve been forgotten was that Seattle’s secondary was destroyed with injuries. Less than 24 hours after the contest, a Seahawks defensive back is lost for the season. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reports that Seahawks nickelback Marquise Blair is done for the 2020 campaign, as he’s set to undergo surgery on his right ACL. This comes following the announcement that edge rusher Bruce Irvin is done...

CHICAGO — The Giants should ask the NFL to start next season with a double-bye just to survive into Week 3. For the fourth straight season and the seventh time in eight years under four different head coaches, the Giants opened the season with back-to-back defeats, following a loss to the Steelers with a 17-13 loss Sunday to the Bears. The Giants won a Super Bowl after an 0-2 start in 2007, but haven’t reached the playoffs after any of their past six 0-2 starts. Their playoff berth in 2016 came after a 2-0 start. Since 1993, about 88 percent of teams that start 0-2 miss the playoffs, though there is an extra postseason berth in each conference this season...

Fueled by a subpar performance against the Saints in Week 1, following which Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians wasn’t shy about placing the blame on his new quarterback, Tom Brady appears intent to put it all to rest on the field. NFL Network reported Sunday that the 43-year-old Brady “went to another level” during practice in advance of playing the Carolina Panthers in Week 2. “He doesn’t want to lose at anything,” an unnamed player told NFL Network. “Especially a football game. So we’ve seen him come out to practice just locked in and focused.” Arians was shockingly frank with reporters after the Bucs fell, 34-23, in New Orleans last Sunday. Brady threw two interceptions in the season-opening loss and...

by Robert Romano  Another 1 million Americans left continued unemployment claims the week of Sept. 5 on an unadjusted basis, the latest data from the Department of Labor shows. That brings the number collecting unemployment from its 13.8 million Aug. 29 level, and from its 22.8 million May 9 level, down to its current 12.3 million, an overall decrease of 10.5 million from its peak. The biggest state gains the week of Sept. 5 were in California, with more than 256,000 coming off of continued claims, 115,000 in New York, 57,000 in Texas, 55,000 in Florida, 55,000 in Illinois and 51,000 in Ohio. Phil Mickelson admitted he had played “some of my worst golf” as he tumbled out of the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, scene of surely his biggest golfing nightmare. Fourteen years after he double-bogeyed the 18th to surrender the 2006 U.S. Open to Geoff Ogilvy, when a par would have secured a third straight major, Mickelson failed to make the cut on the same course. Now 50 years old and fresh from a debut on the Champions Tour, Mickelson followed Thursday’s wretched 79 with a more respectable 74 in tough scoring conditions. But at 13 over par he was certain to miss the weekend’s action, and when asked whether he had considered if it might be his final U.S. Open, Mickelson...
Tiger Woods has made enough double bogeys in his career to understand anything in golf is possible, especially in the U.S. Open. But two on the same hole with a pair of fluffed chips in successive rounds? That’s a stat that won’t make the cut when it comes time to review Woods’ spectacular career. Woods didn’t make the cut Friday, either, which was surprising only to his most sycophantic fans. His game was spotty coming in, and if he had to play Winged Foot every week of his pro career he might still be looking for his first win. He missed fairways and he missed putts. He likely missed the thousands of fans who would have cheered his every move...
McConnell is not just not helping, he's a hindrance. It's been 126 days since the House passed the $3.4 trillion HEROES Act, which Sen. Mitch McConnell has refused to take up, and it's 12 days until the government runs out of funding with the end of the fiscal year. Oh, and the election is in 46 days. Lots of tunnels, only a little light. The light is an apparent all-around agreement on government funding, with a vote the House early next week, lasting until Dec. 18. House Democratic leadership has apparently talked about what might happen if Trump decides to contest elections results and decided a deadline for funding before the end of the year is fine. Let's hope their contingency planning...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Brandon Nimmo had a two-RBI tying triple in the sixth inning and hit the go-ahead solo homer in the ninth to lead the New York Mets to a 10-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. Nimmo’s eighth homer of the year landed in the right field seats off reliever Brandon Workman (1-3) for a 7-6 lead and was the latest big hit against the beleaguered Phillies bullpen. Dominic Smith added an RBI triple and Robinson Cano hit a two-run shot in the ninth. Edwin Diaz loaded the bases in the ninth but retired Andrew McCutchen to end the game. Bryce Harper homered twice for the Phillies (24-25), who lost for the fifth time in six...

Evernote used to be the default in note-taking: the fastest, easiest way to keep track of thoughts across devices. Its fall from grace was slow then sudden (as when four executives left in a single month and the firm was declared to be in a “death spiral”), but a recovery of sorts could be on the horizon. This week, Evernote released a completely redesigned app for iOS and says new apps for Android, Windows, Mac will arrive “in the coming weeks.” The new iOS Evernote app is cleaner and simpler to look at than the old one, and comes with a whole bunch of UI changes and new features. There are now real-time search suggestions, easier ways to organize tags,...
Dear Moneyist, My two sisters and I recently paid over $7,000 for the funeral of our uncle, because he had no insurance and his three children claimed they had no money to do so. Soon after the burial, we found out that purchases on their part were being made, mainly an $800 pair of designer shoes and another cousin remodeled his kitchen. Because of this, would it be proper to ask for repayment? I want my share back, one sister doesn’t want to anger our cousins, and the other is undecided. Thank you. J.C. Dear Niece, Funerals can be exhausting, distressing, healing, uplifting — and expensive. The median cost of a funeral is more than $7,300, according to the...
Justin Silvera came off the fire lines in Northern California after a grueling 36 straight days battling wildfires and evacuating residents ahead of the flames. Before that, he and his crew had worked for 20 days, followed by a three-day break. Silvera, a 43-year-old battalion chief with Cal Fire, California’s state firefighting agency, said he’s lost track of the blazes he’s fought this year. He and his crew have sometimes been on duty for 64 hours at a stretch, their only rest coming in 20-minute catnaps. “I’ve been at this 23 years and by far this is the worst I’ve seen,” Silvera said before bunking down at a motel for 24 hours. After working in Santa Cruz County, his next...

CINCINNATI (AP) — Joe Burrow led the Bengals downfield twice with a chance to grab a late lead. Cincinnati fans watching from home were thinking they were about to see their woebegone franchise reach a turning point behind the new quarterback. Nope. Burrow threw an interception on a shovel pass to end one chance. Then, Randy Bullock missed a 31-yard field goal because of a cramp in his calf with 2 seconds left to complete an opening 16-13 loss to the Chargers. No matter who’s the quarterback, the Bengals still can’t get out of their own way. “It never should have come down to that for us,” coach Zac Taylor said Monday. As bad as it was, there were a...

Protected areas of land around the world have become isolated from each other due to human activities such as farming, mining and urbanisation, study finds.   More than 90 per cent of forests, parks and conservation areas are under intense pressure, leaving protected networks of plants and animals disconnected. Researchers from the University of Queensland studied the location of globally protected areas of land as well as the impact of human activity on these areas.  According to the Australian scientists, these gaps in protected areas could devastate ecosystems as they benefit from being interconnected with other healthy habitats.  Lead author Michelle Ward, a conservation biologist, described the findings that 90 per cent of protected areas are isolated as 'alarming'. Prosecutors say all four officers should be tried together because the nature of the charges and evidence is similar and “it is impossible to evaluate any individual Defendant’s conduct in a vacuum.” The former officers are scheduled to appear in court Friday for a hearing on several issues, including the prosecution’s request to hold a joint trial. Other issues that will be argued include defense requests to move the trial away from Minneapolis and to sequester...

The Islanders’ fourth line continues to live up to its name despite another loss By: Rob Taub September 10, 2020 ShareShareTweetThere’s a reason the New York Islanders are known for having the “best fourth line in hockey”. They simply cause havoc and can change the dynamic of a game. It was evident once again last night in the team’s crushing 2-1 loss in game two to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Needing a big-time start, following just an embarrassing effort in game one Monday night, Islanders’ head coach Barry Trotz deployed the Matt Martin, Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck (a game-time decision) trio early in the game. And what did they do,...
Yet another tractor-trailer jackknifed on Route 287, jamming traffic again and spilling a large amount of fluid on the highway Thursday morning. No injuries were reported in the mishap, which closed the left and center lanes on the northbound highway in Oakland just after 9:30 a.m. New Jersey State Police responded, along with Oakland police, firefighters and hazardous cleanup units. It was another in a series of crashes that has plagued that stretch of highway for years and brought pleas for relief from area residents who fear someone has to die before the situation is examined and rectified.
Trevor Lawrence has only lost one game since taking over as Clemson’s starting quarterback in 2018. But that one defeat was a big one — a lopsided 42-25 loss to Louisiana State in last year’s College Football Playoff championship game — and certainly one that has the potential No. 1 NFL draft pick motivated for some measure of redemption this season entering Saturday night’s season opener at Wake Forest. But Lawrence insists he isn’t going to allow himself to be consumed with the task of helping the Tigers reach the title game for the fifth time in six seasons. He’s vowed to enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the destination. “Getting one last year in college, that’s a special...
(CNN)Helen Reddy might seem so 1970s, but her song "I Am Woman" became a feminist anthem of its time, and serves as the title and centerpiece of a reasonably good movie biography, if one that -- perhaps due to the nature of her life -- feels a little like the Hallmark Channel version of "Bohemian Rhapsody."Shot in the singer's native Australia but set in the US, the film features a winning performance from Tilda Cobham-Hervey as Reddy, with Evan Peters as her bull-in-a-china-shop husband/manager Jeff Wald. Chelsea Cullen, meanwhile, sings new versions of Reddy's hits, and just to keep things in the family, there's a new tune sung by Reddy's granddaughter, Lily Donat. That expression, “one person’s junk is another person’s treasure” could certainly be applied to the internet. But when it comes to some controversial content, I’d go a step further to say “one person’s sewer is another person’s rose garden.”  What some people consider to be Larry Magid (Gary Reyes / Mercury News) legitimate political opinions, others call hate speech or disinformation. Depending on where you sit, the internet, especially social media, is either awash with hate speech or is overly censored to protect against anything deemed ‘politically incorrect’ or, as some claim, offensive to the so-called liberal elite that run online services like Google and Facebook. Dr Anthony Fauci set himself at odds with Donald Trump yet again by sharing his disapproval of the president's crowded campaign rallies where hundreds of supporters gather without masks or social distancing.   Fauci, the nation's leading infection disease expert and a member of the White House coronavirus task force, addressed the issue in an interview with CBS This Morning on Wednesday, hours after a massive MAGA rally in North Carolina.  Asked if he was frustrated by scenes showing supporters - and Trump himself - not wearing masks, Fauci said: 'Well, yes, it is. Shedaresthedevil exposed Gamine’s distaste for running a mile and an eighth and never gave in to Swiss Skydiver’s rush, winning by a length and a half. An early four-run Yankees lead vanished from Citi Field, as did a three-run cushion late when Aroldis Chapman gave up a two-out homer to J.D. Davis in the ninth inning that sent Thursday night’s Subway Series game into extra innings. Having used Adam Ottavino, Chad Green, Zack Britton and Chapman in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, Aaron Boone turned to Albert Abreu in extra innings and it wasn’t a fair fight. With Dominic Smith on second as the designated runner, Abreu faced Pete Alonso, who was hitless in four at-bats and looked bad on two strikeouts. After using Britton and Chapman, it was Abreu, who had one big league inning on his résumé, against Alonso. And nobody should...
ATLANTA (AP) — Dustin Johnson is the No. 1 seed and starts with a two-shot lead at the Tour Championship, not nearly enough to tempt him into looking too far ahead at a FedEx Cup title that already has slipped away from him once before. “It’s not like I’ve got a two-shot lead going into the final round,” Johnson said, who speaks from experience of once losing a six-shot lead in the final round of a World Golf Championship. “I’m still going to have to play some really good golf for four days if I want to be a FedEx Cup champion.” And then there are players like Billy Horschel and Mackenzie Hughes, who will be 10 shots behind Johnson...
