The college football landscape will be clearer than ever this week, thanks to the introduction of a third Power 5 conference. The SEC will begin its 2020 schedule on Saturday, starting with the noon doubleheader of No. 5 Florida at Ole Miss and No. 23 Kentucky at No. 8 Auburn. The results of Saturday’s games should give us a clearer picture of the true conference and College Football Playoff contenders, though fans won’t get a true estimate of that until the Big Ten begins its season on Oct. 24. And who knows about the Pac-12? Regardless, there are plenty of games outside the SEC worth watching, including ESPN’s “College GameDay” game of the week: Florida State (0-1) at No....

The Zoom calls for San Jose State’s football team have put most others to shame the past few months. The virtual visits from Kyle Shanahan, Jon Gruden and a number of NFL players provided insight, inspiration and entertainment. Plus, they were just plain cool. But for sheer excitement, the Spartans’ most recent Zoom call with coach Brent Brennan topped them all. Thanks to Thursday night’s Mountain West Conference announcement, Brennan was able to tell his team they’ll get to play this season, after all. “We were just ecstatic to hear that news because we’ve been working out for 10 weeks, but we haven’t necessarily known if we were working out for any particular goal,” said Cade Hall,...

College football has already seen more than enough twists and turns in its 2020 season, and more than half of the teams haven’t even played yet. This season — which is being played amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States — has come with conferences opting out. and then back in. When the Big Ten and Pac-12 rejoined the season, it queued up an endless argument that started when the College Football Playoff was instituted in 2014: Should the four-team playoff expand to eight teams? There have been countless eight-team plans pitched since. But would one of those fit, given the fluid nature of the 2020 season? After all, the Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC all went to...
Coaches, players and team executives don’t exactly shrug when major injuries occur on an NFL field. They don’t bury their heads in the turf about it, and they certainly don’t wave a white flag in surrender. Usually, they label a slew of injuries as part of a collision sport. Even when the names are so recognizable — on Sunday there were Nick Bosa and Saquon Barkley, both recent winners of top rookie awards; All-Pro Christian McCaffrey, perhaps the NFL’s most versatile player — there’s little attempt to reason with something so out of a team’s control. Except 2020 is presenting a myriad of challenges that, in part, have led to such a spike in guys getting hurt. Nearly 140 players...
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — We’re in month seven of full-blown pandemic in the United States, which is something that we all frankly never expected to say or read or even really fathom. Something we also never imagined was that the NFL would somehow be playing football all across the country in the midst of this pandemic, and yet, there it is, filling up our flat screens every Thursday, Sunday and Monday. The reason the NFL aggressively pursued a season in 2020 was obvious: Money. The second most important reason was … checks notes … yup, that was money, too. But if you move your way down the list of the NFL’s reasons to charge full bore into a 2020...

College football teams might not need to win a single game in order to become bowl eligible. Later today, the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors will cast the most significant vote since conference expansion. For the first two weeks of the NFL season, our FanDuel tournament lineup looked for lower-priced QBs to stack with their passing game buddies. This week, we’re going with an on-the-rise Cam Newton and finding value/differentiation elsewhere in our lineup. Newton might be a popular play, but pairing him with Julian Edelman and Damiere Byrd makes a unique enough stack for our Week 3 NFL DFS GPP picks. Again, we’ve found ourselves looking to play some of the best players on the entire slate to create a sound floor with upside, using the trio of Ezekiel Elliott, Dalvin Cook and DeAndre Hopkins. Throwing in a few of the better value plays on this slate creates the right mix of...
A poll finds that more than half of respondents feel that the Big 10’s return to play is due to President Donald Trump’s urging a college football return. A Morning Consult poll released on Monday revealed that 53 percent of respondents give President Trump credit for the Big 10’s decision to return to play. And they also agree with the decision to go back to football. In the breakdown, 19 percent said the president was “completely responsible,” and an additional 34 percent said they felt the president is “somewhat responsible” for the Big 10’s decision. Less than 20 percent gave the president no credit for the return to play. The poll also found that some respondents are now a bit...

Get this — last week’s Yahoo daily fantasy football cash lineup was let down by Lamar Jackson! Yes, the most bankable player in all of fantasy had what’s likely to be his worst fantasy day of the day of the year in our lineup. It’s a shame because we did well with most of our other picks (Austin Ekeler, Jonathan Taylor, DeAndre Hopkins, Amari Cooper, Tyler Higbee, Cardinals D/ST), but Lamar was merely “decent.” We’ll chalk that up to bad luck and look to rebound with our Week 3 Yahoo NFL DFS cash picks. To be fair, our biggest whiff last week wasn’t Jackson — it was Benny Snell, who we stayed with despite knowing James Conner would play....
By The Associated Press The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world: ___ UMass says it will play football this fall, reversing an August decision to postpone the season until the spring.
