From the attractive configuration of the PlayStation 3, there is always the concern that Sony will not be able to build a console. When it came to PlayStation 4, computer architect Mark Cherni took the issue directly, as most studios have suggested. They are happy with the PlayStation 5, There have been some rumors that it will be a headache to work with the Japanese giant’s next gen hardware – especially with regard to the resident Evil Village. Sony’s PlayStation 5 hasn’t really appeared in live photos, making it difficult to gauge the size of the console. However, the game console has finally made a real-world appearance in a filing at Taiwan’s NCC (via The Verge) — and it’s clear the PS5 isn’t meant for small cabinets. While Sony hasn’t been shy about mentioning the PS5’s 15.4-inch length (or height), 10.2-inch depth and 4.1-inch thickness, the NCC’s photos put those dimensions into context. You’ll have to make room for this beast, whether you’re buying the Digital Edition or the disc-based model. As we pointed out in our specs comparison, this should be the largest console to date. It’s much larger overall than the Xbox Series X (if not...
Sony effectively surprise-launched pre-orders for the console. They were supposed to be available on September 17th, but many retailers started pre-orders soon after the PS5 showcase event ended — many gamers were caught unprepared and missed out on a system. Gizmodo also noted that individual retailers had their own headaches, with Amazon warning customers that they might not get their PS5 units on launch day. We’ve also seen reports of retailers cancelling orders. Microsoft appears to organized a more coordinated campaign, with Xbox Series X and S pre-orders starting on September 22nd at a specific time (11AM Eastern) and stores honoring that schedule. This is a problem console makers want to have, to some degree — it makes clear that...
Sony has apologized for PS5 preorders being a bit of a mess. “Let’s be honest: PS5 preorders could have been a lot smoother,” says Sony from the official PlayStation Twitter account. “We truly apologize for that.” Preorders for the new PS5 console began on Wednesday, a day earlier than Sony had said retailers would take orders. It led to a scramble as Walmart and others started randomly opening up their PS5 preorder slots. Some preorders even disappeared after around a minute. Sony now says it will release more PS5 consoles for preorder “over the next few days,” promising that retailers will share more details. It’s not clear if these preorders will be delivered on launch day, and Sony is also...
Sony announced the date of launch and the price of PlayStation 5 just a couple of days back. If you have missed out on the details, PlayStation 5 will start at $399 and would be available in the US on November 12 and on November 19 for the rest of the world. Moreover, Sony also gave us a glimpse of a range of exclusives including Spider-Man ‘Miles Morales’ and Hogwarts Legacy. But, the date of commencement of pre-order wasn’t mentioned anywhere. The news of the pre-order of PS5 was brought out by Geoff Keighley. He posted an update on Twitter which said that the pre-orders would begin on September 17 at select retailers. However, Sony did confirm the news later...
PlayStation 5 pre-orders are going to start again in a few hours but there is a condition. The console price was revealed on the 16th and pre-orders began right after the showcase was over. Within minutes all the units were sold out and many complained they did not get a chance to order the console. Among these were YouTube and Twitch personalities who were disappointed at not being able to land a unit. Since being sold out we did not hear any news from Sony as to when more units would be available. Sony revealed earlier today that the new pre-order session is going to start soon. Unfortunately this time around, everybody cannot go ahead and order a unit. This...
Sony’s PlayStation 4 had the perfect foil in the Xbox One. In 2013, Microsoft came out with a confused, entertainment-centric pitch: The new Xbox would be the all-in-one entertainment hub of your living room, delivering live television, apps, NFL football, and video games to early console adopters. In every box, Microsoft packed a Kinect motion controller, the gadget that brought the Xbox to Ellen and Oprah. Steven Spielberg was going to make a Halo TV series for Microsoft, which … maybe you could watch on your new Xbox? The PlayStation 4, on the other hand, would play video games. And, in the early days of the new generation, the PS4 would play games better and more cheaply than Microsoft’s new...
On Wednesday, Sony hosted the PlayStation 5 Showcase. The livestream showed off several new games, some for the first time. It also revealed how much the PlayStation 5’s two versions would cost and when they would be released. But as excited as fans were about Sony’s new info, the company may have left more questions unanswered than answered. The most obvious one was, “When can people pre-order the console?” Unfortunately, this question turned into an information nightmare with all kinds of different reports swirling around; retailers spontaneously started accepting pre-orders sometime Wednesday evening, and soon, the entire process descended into chaos. Pre-order shenanigans aside though, here are all the biggest questions that Sony left unanswered after the PlayStation...
It seemed a little too good to be true the other night when Amazon successfully processed a bunch of PlayStation 5 preorders after other retailers dropped the ball spectacularly. And, well, maybe it was. Today, the company has sent out an email to many who preordered a PS5 — both the regular and Digital Edition consoles — advising that shipments might not arrive in time for the November 12th release date. “We’re contacting you about your order of PlayStation 5 to let you know in advance that you may not receive this item on the day it is released due to high demand,” the email reads. “We’ll make every effort to get the item to you as soon as...
Sony revealed the most important details about the PlayStation 5 — its price and release dates — during Wednesday’s PlayStation 5 Showcase. But one thing the company didn’t discuss at all is backward compatibility, which is perhaps the biggest remaining question mark about the PS5. We got a tiny update from PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan this week, courtesy of an interview with the Washington Post. Ryan said that out of the thousands of PlayStation 4 games that Sony has so far tested with the PS5, “99 percent” are compatible with the next-gen console. “The PS4 community will continue to be incredibly important to us for three or four years,” Ryan said. “Many will transition to PS5, we hope if we...

Instomniak Games may be the most exciting studio in games right now, as it is simultaneously on the PlayStation 5 titles except Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morals and Ratchet & Clank: Split. The new edition includes the full original campaign with City That Never Sleeps DLC campaigns. This is definitely great news for PS5 fans and could spell trouble for the folks over at Microsoft. Over the past couple of days, multiple rumors suggested that the PlayStation 5 would be priced lower than the Xbox Series X. A Bloomberg analyst had suggested it would be $399 for the digital-only and $449 for the disc+digital version of the PS5. Sony has finally announced the price for PlayStation 5, and it was perhaps the best bit of a brilliant showcase. With the PS5 disk edition priced at $499 and the digital edition priced at $399, Sony may well have already won the war of next-gen consoles. Microsoft had revealed the price for Xbox Series X and Series S a week ago to be $499 and $299, respectively. The real game-changer is possibly the price of the digital version of PS5. Although the Xbox Series S is priced at a lowly $299, it is a far inferior machine compared to the Series X and PS5. It is likely gamers wouldn’t mind shelling out an extra $100 to get their hands...

Sony revealed the price and release date for the PlayStation 5 on Wednesday, and the company’s most loyal customers used it as an opportunity to mock the upcoming Xbox Series X on social media. While Sony will start selling the PlayStation 5 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea on November 12th, it plans to release the console in Europe and other parts of the world on November 19th. That means most people will have to wait an additional week to try and get their hands on the company’s next-generation console. When the system does make its way to the continent, it will start at €400 throughout the European Union and £360 in the UK. Sony didn’t offer a reason for the delay, but a recent Bloomberg report said the company expects to manufacture 11 million PS5 units by March 2021, four million fewer than it had previously...

By MAE ANDERSON, AP Technology Writer Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 video game console will cost $500 and launch Nov. 12, the company said Wednesday, setting up a holiday battle with Microsoft's Xbox Series X over whose new console will turn up under more trees this year. Video game fans have been chomping at the bit for the new consoles, and not just because they've been stuck inside since March. The roughly 7-year life cycle of a video game console has been nearing an end. Both predecessor consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, launched in 2013. You won’t need to upgrade to a PlayStation 5 to play one of its big upcoming titles. Sony revealed today it plans to release Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4. What’s more, if you do end up buying the game on PS4, you’ll get a free upgrade to the PS5 version. Sony plans the same treatment for SackBoy A Big Adventure and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. “While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch,” the company said.
Alongside the reveal of the PlayStation 5’s $399 and $499 price tags and November 12th release date, Sony also announced how much the various accessories for the upcoming console will cost. The most important price is that of Sony’s new DualSense controller, which will cost $69.99 for additional gamepads. That’s a $10 increase compared to the $59.99 MSRP for the DualShock 4 — apparently all the fancy haptic feedback technology and adaptive triggers that Sony is adding don’t come cheap. And the charging station, which can recharge two DualSense controllers at once, is set to cost $29.99. Meanwhile, the Pulse 3D wireless headset — which will support Sony’s big push for 3D audio — is...

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, games from “our own Worldwide Studios titles will be priced from US$49.99 to US$69.99.” Although not unexpected, the price point is a jump from the current era of consoles, which typically run about $60 for a new game. Launch day titles such as Bluepoint’s Demon’s Souls remake and Destruction All Stars will be the first to carry the new price point. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Mile Morales Ultimate Edition — another launch day title that acts as an expanded version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for $49.99 — will be available...

Check out the table below for all the specs we know to date — we still don’t have the exact size dimensions or weight of either PlayStation model, though we’ll be sure to update this post once that info is revealed. And there’s a key visual enhancement, too: real-time ray tracing, Capcom said in a PlayStation Blog post. Players will have...

Sony ended its PlayStation 5 showcase with a quick tease for what seems to be a follow-up to the highly-lauded God of War reboot on the PS5. Beyond the year — 2021 — we don’t yet know much about the title. It seems reasonable to assume that Kratos, along with Sony Santa Monica, will both make a return, however. The follow-up will likely continue pulling on Norse mythology as well. A Ragnarok-focused sequel makes sense; not only has it been teased before, God of War left plenty of room for another game in that world. In our review of the 2018 game, which focused on an older and wiser Kratos, we said that the reboot had “plenty of gore, but...
The long-rumored Harry Potter open-world game finally has a release date. Hogwarts Legacy will come out sometime in 2021. Sony shared a lengthy cinematic trailer during its PlayStation 5 showcase detailing what you’ll do the game. You’ll play as a wizard of your own creation in an 1800s version of Hogwarts. While much of it will take place in the school, you’ll be able to explore the wider Harry Potter world too. Hogwarts Legacy is reportedly the game that convinced AT&T not to sell Warner Bros. gaming division to another company. You’ll be able to play Hogwarts Legacy on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC.
Harry Potter fans will study witchcraft and wizardry at Hogwarts School in Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world adventure game coming soon for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Announced during Wednesday’s PlayStation showcase, fans were introduced to Hogwarts in the 1800s, where they will play a student “who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.” The game’s official site promises that players will “discover the feeling of living at Hogwarts as you make allies, battle Dark wizards, and ultimately decide the fate of the wizarding world.” They will be faced with a good-versus-evil choice in resolving Hogwarts Legacy ’s central conflict. Bloomberg reports Sony will make about 4 million fewer PlayStation 5 systems in its current fiscal year, a production cut attributed to a weakened supply chain that provides the console’s motherboard. Sony now expects to make about 11 million units, Bloomberg said, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans. Those sources said that production yields for the PS5’s custom-designed silicon have gone as low as 50%. While those yields have improved, they haven’t stabilized at a reliable level. Sony, in April, planned on making 5 to 6 million PS5s, according to internal plans reported by Bloomberg at the time. But the company more than doubled those plans following a summer when quarantine lifestyle pushed its PlayStation Plus subscriptions to record...

Sony has taken numerous opportunities to show off PlayStation 5 gameplay ahead of the console’s launch, but it’s ready for another. The company has announced a PlayStation 5 games showcase event that will stream live on Twitch and YouTube on September 16th at 4PM Eastern. It didn’t tease what games would appear, but the 40-minute virtual presentation would include titles from Sony’s Worldwide Studios and “development partners” and include games arriving on launch “and beyond.” Of course, there’s a lingering question: what about price and availability for the PS5 itself? Now that Microsoft has revealed Xbox Series X and S pricing and ship dates, Sony doesn’t have much of an excuse to keep quiet on PS5 release details. There’s no...

The last two console generations from Microsoft and Sony — spanning from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 all the way to the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X — have been transformative in terms of audio quality. Consumers have been able to move away from high-fidelity tuners and sprawling surround-sound speaker systems to relatively inexpensive and high-quality headphones. That means many consumers, myself included, have laid out some serious coin for new cans. But will your audio investment pay off with the next generation of consoles? We talked to four major manufacturers to get some answers. Turns out, things are still a little bit up in the air. “We’re dependent upon [Microsoft and Sony] to kind of tell...
Star Wars: Squadrons is shaping up to be dream game, not just for Star Wars fans but for space and flight simulation fans as well. While developer Motive Studios already announced that the PC would support HOTAS controls, on Friday it announced that support for throttle and joystick options are coming to consoles as well. HOTAS is a shorthand term for a controller that allows pilots to keep both “hands on throttle-and-stick.” In the context of gaming, this means that players will be able to play Star Wars: Squadrons using throttle and joystick peripherals, giving them more precise control of any X-Wings and TIE-Fighters they might be piloting in the game. HOTAS controls aren’t totally foreign to PC...
Owners of Control’s Digital Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 4 reported Thursday that they briefly had access to the game’s recently launched Ultimate Edition — which contradicts an explanation publisher 505 Games gave in August for why Digital Deluxe owners could not be upgraded to Control’s version for the next-generation consoles. Consumers already upset by what they perceive to be a fishy explanation about upgrades are now even more riled up. Users in a couple of ResetEra threads first noticed the access early Thursday morning, around the time of Control Ultimate Edition’s midnight Sept. 10 launch. One commenter reported that PSN told them they owned Control’s Ultimate Edition, and after deleting it from their console in order to test what would...
