USC said Monday that Arnett died Saturday of heart failure in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Arnett earned the nickname “Jaguar Jon” for his acrobatic agility and elusiveness running the ball that he honed as a youth gymnast. He lettered at USC from 1954-56. He earned All-American and All-Pacific Coast Conference first-team honors as a junior. He received the Voit Trophy as the West Coast’s most outstanding player. In 1955, Arnett led the Trojans in rushing (672 yards), total offense (822 yards), scoring (108 points), kickoff returns (418 yards) and punt returns (282 yards). He also completed 12 passes for 150 yards. As a senior co-captain playing just half of the 1956 season, Arnett rushed for 625 yards and...

Tampa Bay had listed three players as questionable — running back Ronald Jones (quadricep, finger), safety Jordan Whitehead (knee) and defensive back Andrew Adams (not injury related) — but all three were active. The Saints also deactivated receiver Juwan Johnson, cornerback Ken Crawley, offensive lineman Derrick Kelly, defensive tackle Malcolm Roach and defensive back Patrick Robinson. Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones is about to get paid, one way or another. If the Green Bay Packers do not pay running back Aaron Jones in his impending NFL free agency, then one of the other 31 franchises surely will. Jones is in the fourth year of his rookie contract out of UTEP. The former fifth-rounder has flourished in head coach Matt LaFleur’s run-heavy Packers offense. He is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, including his first Pro Bowl nod in 2020. Jones will be a hot commodity in free agency, so the Packers have a big decision to make: Is he part of their long-term plans or not? Mike Jinks is ready for some brutal honesty. After the worst season USC has had on the field in two decades, an especially brutal assessment of his running game and running back coach is warranted. The Trojans finished last in the Pac-12 and 120th in the nation in rushing yards per game (97), and Jinks, the man who presides over that backfield, understands there’s no reason for such a staggering drop. « We are not in the business of making excuses, » Jinks said in a telephone interview Thursday. “At the end of the day, we didn’t do as well as we would have liked. That is something that needs to be addressed. An assistant has already been fired in an attempt to deal with those problems. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — When Leonard Fournette suddenly found himself out of work, one of the first people who reached out to the former Jacksonville Jaguars running back was Tom Brady. The six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback thought he’d be a nice addition to a talented group of playmakers being assembled around him in Tampa Bay. So, he encouraged the fourth-year pro to consider joining the Buccaneers. “I knew I could come in and help the team out,” Fournette said, reflecting on his surprise release by the Jaguars in early September and getting an opportunity to restart his career with a team with championship aspirations. Four months later, he has no regrets. Heading into their second round playoff matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday, the biggest question surrounding the Buffalo Bills is who will fill the void at the running back position after Zack Moss suffered an ankle injury last weekend. Bills head coach Sean McDermott delivered the answer on Thursday when he met with the media before practice and said that veteran running back TJ Yeldon would step into Moss’ role. “TJ is gonna be the one that is thrown up into Zack’s spot,” McDermott said on Thursday during a video conference call. “But we do have a lot of confidence in Antonio (Williams) and we were really impressed by what we saw in that game against Miami.” Yeldon has only played in three games this season and he’s carried the ball...

At any given moment, players could retire, stars could begin to dwindle and stars that fans have grown to love could go out the door. Pittsburgh will have several free agents to pay this offseason. When looking at the salary cap heading into 2021, the Steelers won’t be able to pay many names without using the franchise tag. And if the team has accepted their status...
Getty Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs. The offseason hasn’t gotten off to a great start for Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs. It was reported earlier in the week that he was arrested for an alleged DUI while driving at the McCarran airport in Las Vegas. The lawyers for the running back denied the allegations but based on an image that has been acquired by TMZ Sports, Jacobs is fortunate that his injuries weren’t more severe. The mugshot for Jacobs has circulated online and it shows a major gash on his forehead. Michigan State football has had some big turnover in the transfer portal, but now they’ve landed a talented running back out of the ACC. With 14 exits from the 2020 team via the NCAA transfer portal already, Michigan State has now landed five transfers to help replenish the roster for 2021. On Wednesday, Wake Forest running back Kenneth Walker III announced he is headed to East Lansing to continue his college career. Walker played two seasons at Wake Forest. In 2020 he rushed for 579 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and 13 touchdowns in seven games, with three 100-yard games and a six-game scoring streak. In early December, he opted out of the rest of the season and did not play in the last two games for the Demon Deacons (including the Mayo Bowl against Wisconsin). As a freshman in 2019, Walker averaged 5.9 yards per carry with four touchdowns...
Getty The Buccaneers signed former Seahawks running back C.J. Prosise. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added more depth at running back just in time for the playoffs as the team signed longtime Seahawks rusher C.J. Prosise. Most recently, Prosise played in 10 games this season for the Texans but received limited carries notching 19 rushing yards along with five receptions for 18 yards and a touchdown. The Bucs had been without a running back on their practice squad since promoting Kenjon Barner in early-December, per Buccaneers.com. Prosise played his first three seasons with the Seahawks but struggled to stay healthy throughout his NFL career as this season marked the only time in four years he played in double-digit games. The running back’s rookie season was the best of his career posting 17 receptions for 208 yards along with 30 carries for 172 rushing yards and a touchdown. ...
The Atlanta Falcons put running back Warrick Dunn in their Ring of Fame in 2017, and the video of him finding out is pure gold.  To be named to a team’s Ring of Honor, one has to a legend. If you ask Atlanta Falcons fans, there might not be a better running back in franchise history than Warrick Dunn. A staple of the franchise and all-around good guy, Dunn was one of the league’s best running backs during his time with the Dirty Birds. He was well-liked by all and respected by many for his speed and explosive running styles. On his birthday, Falcons owner Arthur Blank granted him the birthday present of a lifetime back in 2017. The team’s social media staff was able to capture the moment and it was special, and while it was a few years back, the team tweeted it out today. Watching it again on Dunn’s...

Getty Eric Bieniemy, offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs Eric Bieniemy. The Falcons kicked off their offseason by interviewing Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy via Zoom, of course. Bieniemy has been with the Chiefs for eight seasons but 2020 marked his third year as KC’s offensive coordinator. The former Eagles running back previously served as the Chiefs’ running backs coach. For the past two offseasons, NFL teams have offered Bieniemy an interview for a number of jobs, but every single time, they have picked a different candidate, thus leaving Bieniemy to prosper in Kansas City. Dolphins head coach Brian Flores believes it is times up, and “If EB’s not a head coach here soon, something’s wrong.” This year, Bienemy is still a head coaching candidate and it’s, most likely, the year he lands a spot somewhere and if you are a Falcons fan, you better hope...
It’s going to come down to the wire whether Alvin Kamara returns for the Saints’ wild-card playoff game. Kamara missed Week 17 after he tested positive for the coronavirus and was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list. Such a situation requires a minimum of 10 days before an asymptomatic player can return after a positive test. Saints head coach Sean Payton didn’t give much away during his Monday news conference. “We’ll see,” Payton said, according to the the Chicago Sun-Times. “I think it would depend on the player and the situation. A lot of that will be our decision based on where we think we are with the week, the player. We’ve got to be smart.” New Orleans is scheduled to play the Bears on Sunday, Jan. 10. If the Saints had been scheduled for a Saturday game, Kamara would’ve been ineligible, but the Sunday game gives him a chance to get back on...

Next1 of 2Prev postUse your ← → (arrows) to browse Alabama Crimson Tide RB Najee Harris (Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images) Najee Harris has been shooting up draft boards this season, and he is expected to be picked at the end of the first round. Considering the lineage of great backs that Nick Saban has coached at Alabama, it should really raise some eyebrows when Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris placed himself near the top of that hypothetical list with a dominant 2020 season. Harris came into Alabama’s Rose Bowl matchup against Notre Dame with 1,578 yards from scrimmage and an insane 27 total touchdowns, 24 of which came on the ground, in just 11 games. Given his 6-2, 230-pound frame and exceptional speed, one of these five teams could either pick him in the first round or trade up to get him. These five teams need to take a...
Jeff Wilson’s 183 rushing yards last game locked him in as the 49ers’ leading rusher this season. Not a bad way to seek a pay raise on a team that will be pinching pennies this offseason. Wilson now has 524 yards this season (106 carries) and coach Kyle Shanahan said he’s “excited to see him out there Sunday,” when the 49ers (6-9) host the Seattle Seahawks (11-4) at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Wilson’s stats assure him of finishing just ahead of Raheem Mostert, who has nearly identical numbers (521 yards, 104 carries) but is on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Of all the potential issues swirling around the 49ers’ 2021 plans, they’re set with their top two running backs in Mostert and Wilson. “I’m very excited about those guys. Everyone knows how good they’ve done once healthy,” Shanahan said Friday on a video...
The first of the College Football Playoff semifinal games is set to take place between No. 1 Alabama and No. 4 Notre Dame. The top-ranked Crimson Tide — favored by nearly three touchdowns against the Fighting Irish — are historic favorites in their Rose Bowl Game matchup, and a lot of that has to do with their incredible offense. That starts with quarterback Doak Walker Award finalist Najee Harris, Heisman finalist Mac Jones and Sporting News Player of the Year DeVonta Smith. How much success will they see against an Irish defense that ranks 21st nationally in total defense and 14th in scoring defense? Conversely, Notre Dame will look to quarterback Ian Book, running back Kyren Williams and several talented tight ends — a group that put up 47 points against No. 2 Clemson in a regular season win — to keep Alabama off balance. The Crimson Tide defense...

Part of being a successful fantasy football owner is to go back and take stock of the mistakes you made during the season. Win or lose, everyone makes them from time to time. Whether it was your overall draft strategy, the lack of depth on your roster or maybe just errors in judgment regarding your weekly lineup decisions, learning from your mistakes helps pave the way for your next title. This season, one of the biggest mistakes fantasy owners made was underestimating the impact of not having a preseason, particularly with regard to the rookie running backs. When the NFL draft finished up, fantasy owners were salivating over the prospects of Clyde Edwards-Helaire in an Andy Reid offense, Cam Akers finally getting to run behind a solid offensive line and Jonathan Taylor bruising defensive lines as the featured back for the Colts. J.K. Dobbins was feeling the love after...
If you thought that making start ’em, sit ’em decisions in Week 16 was hard, just wait until you see what Week 17 has in store for you. There are a lot of handcuffs and sleepers that have moved into starting roles this week, and our Week 17 fantasy RB rankings are a good demonstration of why most fantasy football leagues treat Week 16 as their championship week. There are already enough banged-up RBs across the NFL in a normal week, but late in the year, teams that are out of contention tend to sit or limit players at the RB position whether they’re hurt or not. So what does that mean for fantasy owners? It’s going to be hard to find true RB2s and navigate the ever-changing RB landscape. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The 18th-ranked Miami Hurricanes hope to redeem themselves when they face Oklahoma State in the Cheez-It Bowl. A lopsided loss to end the regular season cost coach Manny Diaz’s team a spot in a major bowl. Instead, the Hurricanes (8-2) will finish their best season in years on a smaller stage on Tuesday night. Rebounding to win a postseason game for the first time since 2016 will not be easy against an Oklahoma State offense that features one of the nation’s best running games, especially considering Miami yielded 554 yards on the ground to North Carolina in a 62-26 setback on Dec. 12. That loss likely kept the Hurricanes out of a New Year’s Six bowl game. Diaz said his team will be motivated to bounce back. “It always starts with controlling the run,” Diaz said. “It’s simple, basic football. It’s a lot easier trying to...

Getty Lions running back D'Andre Swift celebrates with his teammates. The Detroit Lions don’t look to have much to feel good about in terms of their future, but one spot they should at least have some confidence is at running back. Even as the team is playing out the string in a lost season, Swift continues to show signs of a player who will be a major piece for the team in the future. Last week, he scored a pair of touchdowns and this week, Swift had a nice highlight to his credit that showed his major skills. Swift ran the ball early in the game and cut on a dime for a very nice play. It’s not a stretch to say the run was Detroit’s lone highlight from what became a lost and ugly afternoon.
