The South Carolina coach will be pulling double duty leading the fourth-ranked Gamecocks and running a USA Basketball training camp at the school from Feb. 4-7. “It’s been a year since we’ve been together for a training camp, and I’m excited to step back on the court with the USA National Team,” said Staley, who is also the U.S. Olympic team coach. “We’ve got a great mix of veteran leadership and younger players, most of whom know how I run practices, and I anticipate we’ll have four extremely competitive days of practice here in South Carolina. We’re missing a few pieces of the puzzle, we have 36 players in our pool, but it will be incredibly helpful in our preparations for the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.” Staley’s college team will be playing at Auburn on the first night of...

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern added another quarterback last week when Ryan Hilinski announced he was transferring from South Carolina. If he makes as big an impact as Peyton Ramsey last season, the Wildcats will take it. Ramsey led the Wildcats to a 7-2 record, the Big Ten West championship and a Citrus Bowl victory as a graduate transfer from Indiana. Hilinski threw for 2,357 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions as a freshman at South Carolina in 2019. He lost a competition for the starting job last season after Collin Hill joined the Gamecocks as a graduate transfer from Colorado State, and appeared in just two games. Hilinski is involved with the “Hilinski’s Hope Foundation,” which aims to destigmatize mental illness among college athletes. The foundation was started by his parents Mark and Kym after his brother Tyler, a quarterback at Washington State, committed suicide in 2018. ___ More...
He has only played in five games this season, but Auburn guard Sharife Cooper is making a strong case as the top freshman in college basketball for the 2020-21 season. Cooper, a five-star recruit in the class of 2020 and its No. 24 overall player, missed the Tigers’ first 12 games — and 78 practices — as the NCAA investigated his eligibility. He was declared eligible on Jan. 9, the same day Auburn played rival Alabama. Cooper suited up for the first time this season and, despite playing in a losing effort, immediately showed why he was a consensus top-25 player among recruiting boards. Cooper shot 8 of 19 from the field (42.1 percent) for 26 points, adding nine assists, four rebounds and three steals in the loss. And he hasn’t slowed down since. South Carolina has reportedly paid former football coach Will Muschamp a huge buyout. According to Mike UVA, the Gamecocks have paid Muschamp a buyout of $12.9 million. The number is actually a little lower than the contract called for, which was $15.3 million. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) However, coaches agreeing to slightly smaller buyouts isn’t unheard of. Coaches get their money immediately and it avoids any potential legal battles. USC has paid former Gamecock football coach Will Muschamp $12.9M under a settlement. President Trump's new attorney for his expected impeachment trial isn't a household name. Senator Lindsey Graham confirmed to reporters Thursday that South Carolina attorney Butch Bowers will join the Trump legal team as the "anchor tenant." So, who is Butch Bowers? Bowers, a South Carolina native and graduate of Tulane University School of Law, is no stranger to defending politicians embroiled in ethical scandals. Although, as would be the case for nearly anyone, representing a former president in a Senate impeachment trial for incitement of insurrection is a new level entirely.  Butch Bowers, whose given name is Karl Smith Bowers Jr., is perhaps best known for representing then-South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford in 2009. The GOP-majority legislature considered impeaching the Republican governor when he admitted to lying to aides about hiking the Appalachian trail but was actually with his mistress in Argentina. Sanford was ultimately censured instead.  Bowers also...
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Butch Bowers is used to defending public officials in ethics cases. But he’s never faced anything quite like this. It’s up to Bowers, a South Carolina elections and ethics lawyer, to rise and defend Donald Trump as the Senate plunges next week into an impeachment trial unlike any other, centered on accusations that the former president incited the mob that rampaged through the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. For Trump, the first president twice impeached, the stakes are enormous: If convicted, he could be barred from holding public office again, ending any hopes of mounting another White House bid in 2024. Trump turned to Bowers, a familiar figure in Republican legal circles, after other legal allies passed on the case. That’s a notable departure from his first impeachment trial in 2020, when he had a stable of prominent attorneys — including Alan Dershowitz, Jay Sekulow, who...
A bill that would outlaw most abortions in South Carolina was approved narrowly Thursday by the Senate Medical Affairs Committee and is headed to the Senate floor for debate. Senate Bill 1 would make it a felony to perform an abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, except in medical emergencies. A fetal heartbeat usually can be detected about six weeks after conception before many women realize they are pregnant. Members of the Medical Affairs Committee approved the bill in a 9-8 vote. The bill would require abortion providers to conduct an ultrasound and listen for a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion and to advise the woman of alternatives to an abortion, such as adoption or foster care. Performing an abortion when there is a detectable fetal heartbeat would become a felony punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to two years in prison....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s state senators, emboldened by their newly expanded GOP majority, are nearing floor debate on a bill that would ban almost all abortions in the state without exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest. Bills seeking stricter abortion limits have been debated for years in the General Assembly, regularly failing when Senate Republicans couldn’t get enough votes to clear a procedural hurdle. But abortion foes have expressed confidence this year will be different after Republicans flipped three Senate seats for a 30-16 advantage. The “South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act” was sent to the full Senate by a key committee on Thursday. It would require doctors to use an ultrasound to search for a fetal heartbeat if a woman appears to be at least eight weeks pregnant. If a heartbeat is detected, which is typically around the sixth week of a...

Former President Donald Trump has picked a South Carolina attorney to represent him in his impending Senate impeachment trial, according to a close ally. Butch Bowers, of Bowers Law Office, will represent the president, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said on a Senate GOP conference call on Thursday, Punchbowl News first reported. He did not immediately return a request for comment from the Washington Examiner. Trump was impeached last week for "incitement of insurrection" after he encouraged his supporters who attended a rally in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6 to march to the U.S. Capitol to express their displeasure with Congress's intent to certify Biden's electoral victory. Rioters, many of which were Trump supporters, breached the building, resulting in five deaths and a widespread investigation leading to arrests and charges. Bowers previously served as counsel to the governor of North Carolina a number of times regarding HB2 litigation...

Kodak Black could have a new jail cell in his future as prosecutors in South Carolina prepare to 'aggressively' pursue a sexual assault charge against him after he was pardoned by President Donald Trump in a separate federal case.  The 23-year-old rapper, whose real name is Bill Kahan Kapri, has spent the past two years in a federal penitentiary after being convicted of making a false statement in order to buy a firearm in 2019. Kodak is now set to be released halfway through his 46-month sentence after receiving one of the dozens of pardons Trump issued this week hours before leaving office.  But his legal woes are far from over, because Trump's pardon doesn't shield him from the pending sexual assault case he's facing in state court in Florence County, South Carolina.   Kodak was indicted on a felony charge of first-degree sexual misconduct after prosecutors said he raped an...

Leading Off ● SC-07: After making national headlines for his surprising vote to impeach Donald Trump last week, South Carolina Rep. Tom Rice has, rather less surprisingly, come in for attack from fellow Republicans and may just net a primary challenge for his trouble. Horry County School Board chair Ken Richardson, whom the Post and Courier describes as "a well-known former Mercedes-Benz car dealer" in the 7th District, says supporters have asked him to run and promised, "I know one thing for sure. He will be primaried." Meanwhile, it sounds like former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride is considering a bid, and though he...

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster on Monday warned of a move to shut down elective surgeries in a bid to free up hospital staff and administer more COVID-19 vaccines, according to a report. The news comes after McMaster penned a letter last week to the South Carolina Hospital Association, asking hospitals to voluntarily lower the number of nonessential procedures amid staff shortages and a rising demand for a faster vaccination pace. Fox News has requested comment from the association. "Right now we have doses that have not been given that are sitting on the shelf," McMaster said Monday, per The Post and Courier. "That ends. That is over. We’re not doing that anymore ... even if I have to order ending elective surgeries in some hospitals to free up staff to give those shots." A bill that would criminalize most abortions in South Carolina passed the first hurdle of legislative approval Thursday. Senate Bill 1 would make it a felony to perform an abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, except in medical emergencies. A fetal heartbeat usually can be detected about six weeks after conception before many women realize they are pregnant. After listening to four hours of testimony Thursday, members of the Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee – joined at one point by Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette – approved the bill with an amendment, 3-2. The bill would require abortion providers to conduct an ultrasound and listen for a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion. Performing an abortion when there is a detectable fetal heartbeat would become a felony punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to two years in prison. Several other states have passed so-called...

Reuters January 14, 2021 0 Comments  President-elect Joe Biden has picked former South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison to head the Democratic National Committee, Biden’s office said in a statement on Thursday. Harrison was a successful fundraiser as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in South Carolina, amassing a stunning $109 million war chest for his 2020 campaign before ultimately losing his bid to unseat Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. In November’s election, Democrats held their majority, although reduced, in the U.S. House of Representatives, and gained razor-thin control of the U.S. Senate after winning two runoff elections last week in Georgia. But they are bracing for tough congressional elections in 2022. The current DNC chairman, Tom Perez, has said he would not seek another term. Harrison, an associate chairman for the DNC, formerly worked for U.S. Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, whose early backing of Biden...

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to name Jaime Harrison, who challenged Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in the 2020 elections, as the next Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair. Biden’s pick is part of an effort to build up the committee ahead of the 2022 midterm elections for the party, the New York Times reported. Harrison, a former chairman of the South Carolina Democrat Party, attained political stardom last year when he shattered fundraising records in his race against Graham, raising $57 million in the third quarter of 2020. Even though Harrison lost to Graham in November, pulling in 44 percent of the vote to Graham’s 55 percent of the vote, Harrison gained a lot of support from the Democrat Party. Harrison is also well-known to members and staff at the DNC when he was in charge of the South Carolina state party and attempted to become chairman of the party in...
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Tom Rice, who hid in an office as rioters overran the U.S. Capitol last week, acknowledged Thursday that his vote to impeach President Donald Trump could cost him reelection as a conservative Republican but he said Trump’s failure to calm the mob left him no other choice. Rice represents a South Carolina district fiercely loyal to Trump, yet on Wednesday night, the congressman became one of just 10 Republicans to join Democrats in voting to impeach the president, in a stunning reversal from his position days earlier. The rare Republican votes to make Trump only the first president ever impeached twice drew angry outbursts and calls to state Republicans that made clear that splitting from Trump could come at a heavy political price. Interviewed by The Associated Press, Rice said he ultimately came to the conclusion that what he characterized as Trump’s inaction...
Jaime Harrison, the former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate from South Carolina who raised record sums of money in his failed bid to unseat GOP Senator Lindsey Graham, is expected to be nominated by President-elect Joe Biden to serve as the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee, two people familiar with the plans tell CBS News. A formal announcement from Mr. Biden is expected as soon as this week. According to tradition, an incoming Democratic president gets to choose who should serve as chairman of the DNC and the choice is usually approved with little opposition by party leaders. Harrison, 44, is the former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, a former senior DNC official and a close friend of House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, Democrat of South Carolina, for whom he once worked. Clyburn has emerged as an even more influential Democratic Party powerbroker after he helped revive...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina lawmakers are again considering a bill that would ban most abortions in the state and it seems much more likely to pass this time thanks to conservative gains in the General Assembly and at the U.S. Supreme Court. The ban on abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around six weeks after conception, have passed in several other states, but can’t be enforced because of court challenges. For years, the “South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act ” has made it through the House and all the way to the full Senate. But backers could not get two-thirds of senators to agree to overcome a procedural hurdle and vote on the ban. Some supporters of the bill were also hesitant to pass it because of the risk and expense of having it thrown out by the courts. Two things...

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Jaime Harrison, the failed South Carolina Senate candidate and longtime Democratic Party official, is President-elect Joe Biden’s choice to lead the national party, according to multiple party officials. Harrison is expected to be elected without any significant opposition when the Democratic National Committee convenes next Thursday in a virtual session, a day after Biden is inaugurated. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision hasn’t been announced. The 44-year-old comes to the job with strong support from state party chairs around the country and from House Minority Whip Jim Clyburn, a close Biden ally and the highest-ranking Black member of Congress. Harrison is also Black, giving Biden a boost in his pledge to assemble a racially and ethnically diverse Cabinet and leadership team. “Everyone cleared the field for Jaime,” said Texas Democratic Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa. “Everybody was supportive of this. Jaime Harrison may have failed to unseat South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, but he's President-elect Joe Biden's reported pick to become the next chair of the Democratic National Committee. Harrison will likely lead the Democrats' push to keep both the House and Senate after the 2022 elections. The party underperformed this cycle down-ballot. While Harrison has long been favored by Biden for the role, thanks in part to House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn's endorsement, he will still need to win a rank-and-file member vote this month. Neither a Biden transition nor a DNC spokesman immediately responded to the Washington Examiner's requests for comment. Harrison was a fundraising powerhouse last year. He brought in $100 million for his unsuccessful Senate campaign, losing to Graham by double digits. Polling had suggested the contest was a toss-up. Harrison is a DNC associate chair and senior counselor. He's also a former chairman...
Gov. McMaster presented his fourth State of the State address Wednesday evening to a joint session of lawmakers at the state Capitol in Columbia. “This year, school districts in our state have received over $1.2 billion in COVID-19 relief from the federal government,” McMaster said. “Along with state funds, school districts have been provided the resources necessary to operate full-time, and teach in-person, five days a week. I ask the General Assembly to quickly send to my desk legislation for my signature that will require unwilling school districts to reopen their classrooms.” McMaster also requested the Legislature to approve funding for $3,000 pay raises...
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina was one of only 10 House Republican to join with Democrats on Wednesday in voting to impeach President Donald Trump, a stunning reversal from his position just days earlier. In a statement released Wednesday evening, Rice said he didn’t know if Trump’s speech “amounted to incitement of a riot, but any reasonable person could see the potential for violence.” But saying that Trump ”communicated only on Twitter and offered only weak requests for restraint” as the violence continued, Rice — who was in the House as the riot went on — said it “is only by the grace of God and the blood of the Capitol Police that the death toll was not much, much higher.” Rice represents South Carolina’s 7th Congressional District, an area near Myrtle Beach that has gone heavily for Trump. The House Ways and Means Committee approved the recommendations after little discussion, 20-3. “It's time for us to deal with this issue for once and for all,” Ways and Means Committee Chairperson Murrell Smith, R-Sumter, said. “I’ve yet to find anyone in here that says Santee Cooper ought to continue as is.” The legislation would authorize the General Assembly to sell Santee Cooper and lays out a mechanism for such a sale. Leaders said they want to see...
