Children can be infected with the novel coronavirus, but have antibodies against the disease in their blood at the same time, a new study suggests. Researchers found that 15 percent of pediatric patients had the virus and a built up immune response simultaneously. Younger patients also took twice as long as to clear the coronavirus from their systems than patients in their teens and early 20s. The team, from Children's National Hospital, in Washington, DC, says the findings still leave many questions unanswered such as how long children are infectious for and and at what point do they start making antibodies that work against COVID-19.  In a new study, 15% of children tested positive for both the novel coronavirus...

Andrew Cuomo announced on August 13 that the state had hit its fifth straight day of a coronavirus infection rate below 1%. Of 87,900 tests performed, 737 came back positive for a rate of .84%. “New York State continues to stay vigilant in the face of an ongoing crisis across the country as we pursue a phased reopening,” Cuomo said. “Yesterday we did a record-high number of tests – which is critical to our cautious, data-driven reopening strategy – and we’ll keep closely monitoring the numbers we receive daily. Nearly 100,000 children tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks of July, just weeks ahead of schools reopening in some states amid the pandemic. In total 97,000 children tested positive for the novel coronavirus from July 16 to July 30, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Today there are more than five million cases of COVID-19 in the country and over 162,000 deaths. Out of those infections more than 338,000 were children. Dr. Tina Hartert of Vanderbilt University says increased testing of children will be the key to determining their role in transmitting the virus – data more important than ever as some school districts return to in-person class this month. LANSING, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order Friday to reinstate protections for Michigan workers as the state continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. This comes after the federal government allowed federal pandemic unemployment assistance for Americans who have lost work as a result of this virus to lapse at the end of July, putting pressure on more people to return to work, even if they’re sick. Under this executive order: The governor prohibits employers from discharging, disciplining, or retaliating against employees who make the responsible choice to stay home when they or their close contacts are sick. Employers must treat employees who stay home when they are sick as if...
California officials are desperate to reduce the spread of coronavirus in the workplace, which has been one reason for a surge in cases. Los Angeles wants to pay people who test positive for coronavirus to quarantine - even if they are in the country illegally. City councillor David Ryu has proposed setting aside $25million for the 'salary replacement' scheme, which would pay to keep people at home for two weeks. To make the situation even more difficult, one of the boys is medically fragile. “He was starting to get sick, he was retching,” said Jeff Carlton. RANCHO CORDOVA (AP) – Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday urged an agricultural Southern California county to reimpose stay-home orders amid a surge in positive coronavirus tests there as officials in several counties also expressed concern over rising positive test rates and hospitalizations. He said Imperial County leaders would be permitted to decide on how to proceed, but if they don’t agree to act “I am committed to intervening.” The county, with a population of 175,000 people on the Mexican border, has been the slowest in the state to reopen amid continued high positive rates, which the state health director said have averaged 23% in the last week, compared with 5.7% statewide. President Donald Trump decided earlier this month to move the Republican Party's national convention from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Jacksonville, Florida, because of the latter's less stringent social distancing policies for large gatherings. But the Sunshine State's laxer approach is already causing problems for local restaurants — a pattern visible in many parts of the country as the resurgent coronavirus forces eateries and other businesses that had reopened to close their doors anew. Lynch's Irish Pub in Jacksonville was forced to close on June 13 after more than 20 customers and workers were reportedly infected with the virus. Although it has since reopened after several days of cleaning, other restaurants and bars in the Jacksonville area, and more broadly across the U.S.,...

But he wouldn't criminally enforce it."I think people want to know that we're going to support their constitutional rights," he told the newspaper.
