Former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice said on Monday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “All In” that President Donald Trump had “refused to understand the world that we live in, the nature of the threats we face.” She cited the coronavirus pandemic. Rice said, “I think American voters who are focussed on our international standing have to be extraordinarily dismayed. Poll after poll shows that our allies don’t trust us, that our confidence and approval of the people is in the gutter. And, yet, more importantly, we are not seeing out of the president the leadership that we need to keep us safe. National security is about keeping the American people safe, and we have lost over 200,000 Americans to COVID-19. The...
Credit should go to Michael McFaul for letting the cat out of the bag. Or maybe, we should say, that McFaul, an anti-Trump Democrat who’s a fixture on cable news, has just let the State out of the Deep. That is, he has made the Deep State into the Obvious State.   And now, of course, we have the latest surfacing of the Deep State, in the form of whoever, or whatever, leaked what are said to President Trump’s tax returns to the New York Times. The Times assures us that whoever had the returns in the first place had them “legally,” but didn’t say anything about the legality of the transmittal of them to the Times—that’s certainly highly illegal. So maybe that’s...
White Sox star Jose Abreu finally getting the chance to play in the postseason For the first six years of his Major League career, Jose Abreu toiled in relative anonymity on Chicago’s South Side, overshadowed by the White Sox crosstown neighbors and his club’s mediocrity. That will finally change on Tuesday, when Abreu, a front-runner for American League Most Valuable Player this season, plays in the first postseason game of his career. Abreu and the White Sox travel to Oakland to play the Athletics in the best-of-three Wild Card series. Manager Rick Renteria knew what kind of player his first baseman was. So did the players in his clubhouse. But Abreu introduced himself to the wider public this season, leading...
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the New York Times report on President Trump's tax returns comes with broad national security implications. The California Democrat wondered whether foreign governments might have “leverage” on Trump during an interview with NBC News on Monday as the president has hundreds of millions of dollars in loans coming due in the next few years. “This president appears to have over $400 million in debt. To whom? Different countries? What is the leverage they have? So, for me, this is a national security question,” Pelosi said. “We take an oath to protect and defend. This president is commander in chief. He has exposure to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, to whom?...

(CNN)As the world braces for a possible second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is also growing concern in the counterterrorism, scientific and global public health communities over the potential future threat posed by bio-engineered pathogens.A few weeks ago, scientists at the US Military Academy at West Point warned that "the wide availability of the protocols, procedures, and techniques necessary to produce and modify living organisms combined with an exponential increase in the availability of genetic data is leading to a revolution in science affecting the threat landscape that can be rivaled only by the development of the atomic bomb." One scenario prompting particular concern is a contagious virus created or modified by a terrorist group or other bad actor...

POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE – About 200 sign-carrying protestors came to one of Marin’s most historic dairy farms Sunday to demonstrate against what they say is mismanagement of a beloved national park located an hour from San Francisco. The latest battle at the 71,000-acre Point Reyes National Seashore could be characterized as “cows versus tule elk,” but as with many decisions at Point Reyes, the issues are as complex as they are contentious. Competing interests intersected Sunday to underscore the prickly position park rangers face in trying to manage a land of wild coastal beaches and headlands, plunging cliffs and estuaries – as well as 24 generational ranches that were here before California became a state. Bradley Cortright September 27, 2020 0 Comments President Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster is ruling out the possibility that the military would be involved in a presidential transfer of power after the election. During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press” on Sunday, McMaster was asked about reports that senior Military officials are concerned that the armed forces may be dragged into the process of a potential transfer of power. “The Military will have no role in a transition. In fact, to even talk about it, I think is irresponsible,” McMaster responded. He continued, “If you detect some reticence on the part of senior military leaders or people in the Pentagon to talk about it, it’s...
Attorneys for TikTok argued Sunday morning during a dial-in hearing that a ban by the Trump administration would be “devastating,” and urged a judge to block it until the entire case can be decided. TikTok’s attorney said the ban that would prevent new downloads of TikTok from Apple and Google’s app stores at 11:59PM ET today was essentially “shutting down speech.” But the government’s lawyers argued that First Amendment claims by TikTok don’t apply, because the Trump administration considers the app a national security risk. On August 6th, President Trump issued an order saying the security concerns about TikTok and WeChat, both China-based apps, constituted a national emergency. He invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which lets...
There’s clearly a pragmatic incentive to allow reused rockets. The Space Force expects to save $52.7 million for the GPS III missions alone. It might also be difficult to insist on brand new rockets. SpaceX is shifting its focus to Starship, and might not be eager to make more Falcon 9 rockets than necessary. This also reflects added trust in SpaceX. Although the company has clearly played a crucial role in US government launches through projects like Crew Dragon, the contract represents another level of confidence.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden assured U.S. mayors on Saturday he would be an active partner in the White House in helping them respond to racial justice protests and the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. "If I am elected, you will have direct access to the White House," Biden, who is challenging Republican Donald Trump in the Nov. 3 election, told the fall leadership meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in a virtual address from his home in Delaware. "It is all from the bottom up. It doesn't go from the top down," he said. "Whether your city is red or blue, I'm going to be there, I promise you." Biden, who served as vice...
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The United States now has more than seven million coronavirus cases, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is projecting there will be up to 226,000 COVID-19 deaths by mid-October. Locally, New Jersey continues to see an increase in cases. Compared to many parts of the country, New Jersey is in pretty good shape, but Gov. Phil Murphy is worried about the steady increase of COVID-19 cases the state has seen over the past two weeks. “I have extended the public health emergency,” Murphy said. It’s the seventh time Murphy has extended the emergency order, keeping in place the state’s ability to take action to fight COVID-19. After a sustained decline, cases in September have been...

Joe Biden “is the leader our nation needs,” according to 489 retired generals, admirals, senior noncommissioned officers, ambassadors, and senior civilian national security officials. “We love our country,” the group, which included Republicans and independents as well as Democrats, wrote in an open letter. “Unfortunately, we also fear for it.” Nowhere does the letter mention Donald Trump by name, though throughout it cites Biden’s good qualities in ways obviously distinguishing him from Trump: empathy, honesty, “experience and wisdom,” personal responsibility, “sound judgment, thorough understanding, and fundamental values.” Biden’s good qualities overwhelm policy differences, the 489 former officials write. “While some of us may have different opinions on particular policy matters, we trust Joe Biden’s positions are rooted in sound judgment, thorough understanding,...

(CNN) — Oregon, Washington and other areas of the West will get a welcome break from dry weather Thursday and Friday, with some rain in the forecast. But for the wildfire-weary, another bout of dry weather returns this weekend and could last weeks. Along with already dry fuel on the ground, the forecast will mean more hazardous fire conditions in a season that has already broken records. “A ridiculously long-lasting upper ridge of high pressure will likely deliver 1-2 weeks of warm to hot and dry weather to the drought- and wildfire-stricken forecast area Sunday through the foreseeable future,” the Medford, Oregon, National Weather Service says. The Florida State Seminoles and Miami Hurricanes square off this Saturday but the rivalry game doesn’t have the same cache as it did in the 80s and 90s during their heyday. The rivalry between Florida State and Miami used to be one of the best in all of college football. It was at its peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s with one of the biggest games coming in 1987 when both were ranked in the top four and vying for a national championship. The Hurricanes are 11-point favorites over the Seminoles and will likely have another pretty big victory over their in-state foes. While the rivalry will always be a rivalry, it just doesn’t have the same feel anymore,...

The Republican National Committee spent hundreds of thousands of dollars last month on books by Donald Trump Jr. and Fox News personality Sean Hannity, federal records show. The RNC’s August expenditure report filed with the Federal Election Commission shows that the committee spent $405,404 on “donor mementos” from book retailers Barnes & Noble, booksamillion.com and Porchlight Books. The RNC promoted Hannity‘s book, titled “Live Free or Die,” in early August, offering signed “priority access” copies as an incentive for political donations of $75 or higher. Around the same time, the committee launched a similar promotion for Trump Jr.’s new book, “Liberal Privilege,” which it awarded to donors at the same price point. Emails sent from an RNC address in late July suggested that the committee would make bulk pre-orders of the books, and it appears to have reported...

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán warned Monday that European institutions do not serve the interests of the citizens of Europe, but rather those of prominent billionaire disrupter George Soros. Europeans must reaffirm their national sovereignty against the pretensions of globalist liberals, Mr. Orbán said in a strongly worded message. “According to the liberals, it is best to cede our national governments’ powers to international organisations – and as many of those powers as possible,” Mr. Orbán warned. “In this they see universal ideals, European values and universal human rights being given further encouragement and recognition.” Yet these organisations are “inevitably prone to a despotism which they tend to call ‘the rule of law’ but which is simply ‘the rule of...

Many arguing against aggressive stimulus spending from the federal government cite one critical reason: the national debt. Now totaling over $26.7 trillion, the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio is one of the highest in the world. Top economics and policymakers, however, are not concerned.  When asked about the staggering number, Nobel laureate Esther Duflo told CNBC, "That is not something that the general public should be worried about for the time being at all." She continued, explaining that American credit is one of the safest assets to hold, so in a sense, it is unlikely that the government will ever have to repay this debt. AFL-CIO chief economist William Spriggs asked us to consider if the national debt is creating money...

When Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and new manager Gabe Kapler arrived at the Winter Meetings in San Diego in December, the team’s leaders refused to use the word “rebuild.” After three consecutive losing seasons, the Giants were making significant changes to the organization and clearly eager to rely on younger and inexperienced talent in the year ahead, but Zaidi and Kapler never shied away from their desire to remain as competitive as possible. With exactly one week remaining in the regular season, the Giants still have a chance to sneak into the postseason. Following a resounding 14-2 victory over the A’s on Sunday in which shortstop Brandon Crawford, left fielder Darin Ruf and catcher...

Getty President Donald Trump (left) and Chief of Staff Mark Meadows (right). From the 2020 presidential election to arguments over which party should be allowed to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, President Trump and Democrats have not agreed on much. However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Trump both agree that they want to provide Americans with more stimulus checks. Chicago TV station WGN-9 reported that Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke on the phone on September 16 to discuss restarting negotiations and both sides considered the Problem Solvers Caucus‘ bipartisan framework progress. However, hangups about the national debt may be holding many Senate Republicans back on supporting a coronavirus...

Way back in April, which is like 237 years ago in COVID time, I wrote about the importance of Omaha, Nebraska, this presidential season. Beijing is accusing Washington of “hegemony and provocation” — for telling the truth about China’s ever-more-aggressive moves toward hegemony and provocation. It’d be laughable, except the Chinese Communist Party’s increasing crackdowns at home and influence-seeking abroad are no joke. China’s criticism was an answer to the Pentagon’s latest “China Military Power Report,” which notes the regime has “marshaled the resources, technology, and political will over the past two decades to strengthen and modernize [its army] in nearly every respect.” In fact, “China is already ahead of the United States in certain areas.” The CCP now controls the world’s largest navy. And it’s obsessively growing its nuclear and missile arsenal. The report warns that the goal of this military buildup is...

Joe Biden is sending mixed, if not contradictory, messages about what legal form his national mask mandate would take amid uncertainty about whether the president has any authority to mandate the wearing of face coverings. President Barack Obama faced criticism while in office when he projected not having to wait for Congress to make sweeping changes across the country, saying, “I’ve got a pen, and I’ve got a phone” — the “pen” referencing his ability to sign executive actions and the “phone,” his power to court support for his agenda. The former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee has been clear that he would utilize the “phone” to ask state and local officials to implement mask policies, but...

With COVID-19 blazing through the nation and no federal response in sight, Donald Trump temporarily affixed Mike Pence’s name on a Coronavirus Task Force before deciding that group was more useful to leverage news coverage for his own benefit. Behind the scenes, both Pence and medical experts were sidelined. As Trump turned the task force into a daily mini-rally, it was actually Jared Kushner who was left to manage development of a national testing plan, a national case tracing plan, and the distribution of protective gear and medical supplies. And what happened then wasn’t simply that Kushner didn’t fail to plan. He actually planned to fail.  In July, Vanity Fair reporter Katherine Eban reported on how a national testing strategy had been ready to...

The gender pay gap within the White House is reportedly worse than the national average, according to an analysis by nonprofit news organization The 19th. Analysis by the website found salaries in President Trump's White House had a $33,300 difference between the median salary for male staffers and the median salary for female staffers. This year, male staffers earned a median salary of around $106,000, and female staffers' median was about $72,700. The statistics indicate women working for the administration make around 69 cents on the male dollar, which is less than the national gender pay gap of 82 cents on the dollar. Still, both the national numbers and the White House numbers reflect the "raw" gender pay gap, which does not...
