Thousands of New York City tenants were potentially “left in the cold” because of a glitch with the city’s tracking system that “wrongly” ignored new heat and hot water complaints, a stinging state audit released Thursday claims. The Department of Housing Preservation & Development code requires landlords to provide heat from Oct. 1 to May 31, and hot water 24 hours a day. Having no heat or hot water is a hazard that is supposed to be addressed within 24 hours, said state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The problem is that HPD was lumping new or additional heat and hot water complaints from the same apartment complexes with the earlier complaints already on file, auditors said. As a result of this...
When it comes to creative solutions, you’ve got to hand it to Shannon and Scott Guggenheim. Since 3Below Theaters — which the Guggenheims operate in downtown San Jose — has been closed since March, the couple has been tirelessly working to come up with ideas to keep their livelihood going and provide people with much needed entertainment. I’m honestly blown away by what they’ve come up with: “Up on the Roof,” four weeks of curated movies starting Oct. 8 that will be screened on the top floor of the city-owned parking garage above 3Below Theaters on Second and San Carlos streets. The movies selected are more than just popular entertainment; they include selections that address the social justice issues we’re...
Washington (CNN)The two Republican members of the North Carolina State Board of Elections abruptly resigned Wednesday, saying in separate letters that they felt misled by the state attorney general's office and board staff when they agreed to a settlement that would allow voters to fix absentee ballots with missing information. Election 101The stunning departures, less than six weeks before Election Day in a hotly contested battleground state, come one day after the five-member board said it unanimously agreed to the settlement, which still must be approved by a court. A hearing has been set for October 2 regarding the settlement, which also allows ballots postmarked on Election Day to be received six days later. In a statement, the board said it...
Cops have given out just one ticket to a straphanger for refusing to wear a mask on transit since Gov. Andrew Cuomo instituted a $50 fine last week, officials said Wednesday. MTA police officers issued the single summons at Penn Station on Saturday to a drunk customer who harassed an employee, then showed cops a fake ID when they tried to issue him a summons, the agency said. The unnamed man had previously refused to mask-up while loitering outside a Long Island Rail Road ticket window, an agency spokesman said. NYPD cops, meanwhile, had not given out any mask summonses of Wednesday, the department said. Transit officials and police leaders have said the purpose of the $50 penalty is to...
The chief of the Environmental Protection Agency has threatened to relocate the bureau's Manhattan office, claiming federal workers are not safe in the city following a summer of violent protests. In a scathing letter to Governor Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday, administrator Andrew Wheeler accused the pair of failing to protect its employees after rioters targeted the EPA headquarters during a demonstration in July.  Wheeler, who was first appointed as deputy by President Trump in 2018, also said staff at the 290 Broadway office were forced to work from home last week amid fears for their safety when anti-ICE protests broke out in Lower Manhattan. EPA chief Andrew Wheeler threatened to relocate the agency's New York...
By REBECCA BOONE, Associated Press BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Thirty-seven jails and juvenile detention centers across Idaho charge more for inmates and families to make in-state calls than they can legally charge for out-of-state phone calls, according to data from the Federal Communications Commission. That means the vast majority of inmate calls are charged at what the FCC calls “exorbitantly high rates." Federal Communication Commission Chairman Ajit Pai asked U.S. governors on Tuesday to lower the rates in their states. The agency can limit how much jails and prisons charge inmates to make out-of-state calls but doesn't have the same authority over intrastate calls. In 2015 the FCC created rate caps for in-state inmate calls as well, but telecom companies...

The space agency published the Artemis Plan, which will see the first woman land on the lunar surface, as well as the next man. To date, only 12 people, all Americans, have landed on the moon. “With bipartisan support from Congress, our 21st century push to the Moon is well within America’s reach,” Bridenstine said in a statement. “As we’ve solidified more of our exploration plans in recent months, we’ve continued to refine our budget and architecture. We’re going back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits. "As we build up a sustainable...

An aurora has been spotted surrounding a comet orbiting Jupiter - the first time the glowing emissions have been seen around a cosmic snowball.  Astronomers from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) identified the shimmering phenomenon using instruments on the European Space Agency (ESA) Rosetta spacecraft.  Rosetta was the first space mission to place a lander on the surface of a comet, the first to orbit a comet nucleus and the first to follow it into the inner solar system.  On the Earth, auroras are formed when charged particles from the Sun follow the planet's magnetic field lines to the north and south poles where they strike atoms in the atmosphere and create a shimmering curtain of colourful lights in the...

The federal judge who shut down Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's sabotage of the U.S. Postal Service sort of just scratched the surface when he said the case presented to him showed that DeJoy and Donald Trump are “involved in a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service” and said “this attack on the Postal Service is likely to irreparably harm the states’ ability to administer the 2020 general election.” There are a lot of rocks being turned over right now, and every one of them reveals a teeming mass of corruption, not just with DeJoy but also with USPS Board of Governors Chairman Robert "Mike" Duncan, a major Republican donor, former RNC chairman, and great friend of...

The controversial guidance for testing for coronavirus as published on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website was not approved by the agency's scientists, it has been revealed.   Officials told the New York Times that the advice published August 24 was seen by CDC experts for review but was rewritten only by the Department of Human and Health Services and quietly made public.  The new advice sparked controversy and was slammed by public health experts for suggesting that a person without coronavirus symptoms does not need to be tested, even if they have had known contact with an infected person.     Thursday's report sparked further concerns as to the independence of the CDC after Politico reported last week that political appointees...
Savannah Rychcik September 17, 2020 0 Comments A judge and Obama appointee is putting a stop to Postal Service changes that have hindered the delivery of mail across the nation. He revealed he is issuing a nationwide preliminary injunction after 14 states challenged the changes. States challenged the “leave mail behind” policy, which permits carriers to leave mail at distribution centers if it delays their routes. They also called on the agency to to treat mail-in ballots as First Class mail. He added the changes...
A bombshell report in The Washington Post today details the ongoing feud between the Trump administration and the US Postal Service, and it provides insight into just how lucrative Amazon’s business is for the agency. According to documents obtained by watchdog group American Oversight, Amazon generated $1.6 billion in profit and $3.9 billion in revenue for the USPS in fiscal year 2019, with the postal service delivering 1.54 billion packages for the e-commerce giant. That represented about 30 percent of Amazon’s total volume last year, and, according to the Post, revenue has increased this year. President Trump has complained for at least the last two years — without citing evidence — that the USPS loses “$1.50 on average...
Attorney General Bill Barr asserted his authority to intervene in politically-charged cases and castigated career Justice Department staff in a Wednesday speech. “What exactly am I interfering with? Under the law, all prosecutorial power is invested in the attorney general,” Barr said in the speech at Hillsdale College, a conservative Michigan institution. The attorney general mocked the idea that such decisions should be at the discretion of less-senior DOJ attorneys, according to The Washington Post. “Letting the most junior members set the agenda might be a good philosophy for a Montessori preschool, but it is no way to run a federal agency,” he said. The attorney general also attacked state shutdown measures during the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter...

London (CNN Business)The huge shock to many of the world's biggest economies from the coronavirus pandemic may not be quite as bad as economists feared just a few months ago.In a report published on Wednesday, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development upgraded its forecast for global economic output this year, noting that while declines were still "unprecedented in recent history," the outlook has improved slightly since June. The Paris-based agency said it now expects the world economy to shrink by 4.5% in 2020 before expanding by 5% in 2021. Previously, the OECD said it thought the global economy would contract by 6% this year and grow 5.2% next year. But the agency, which represents the world's biggest economies, warned that headline...
Bill Gates no longer trusts US regulators - and questions whether the Food and Drug Administration's eventual approval of a coronavirus vaccine will mean the shot is safe.  'The FDA lost a lot of credibility,' the billionaire philanthropist told Bloomberg Television, referring to the agency's series of prematurely positive outlook on various COVID-19 treatments, and subsequent retractions.  Confidence in a vaccine from the long-time investor in public health initiatives could help to encourage Americans to get the shot that is likely the world's best hope to combat the pandemic.  But right now, Gates has little confidence that the FDA will sufficiently vet vaccines, and his skepticism is mirrored in the American public.  Meanwhile, Gates's own foundation published a report on Monday...
Jim Reilly had only been in charge of the US Geological Survey for seven months, and already things were getting hot. It was December 13, 2018, and he was about to give a keynote at the American Geophysical Union’s annual conference, billed as the largest gathering of earth and space scientists in the world. Reilly is a petroleum geologist and former astronaut who has logged more than 850 hours in space, 22 days in deep-sea research submarines, and four months on the glaciers of West Antarctica. But among the more than 8,000 government employees who now served under him—many of whom were in attendance at the conference—the affable, lanky Texan was something of a stranger. So when he approached the...

A political appointee of President Trump has been interfering with COVID-19 reports by health experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because their data doesn’t match the ‘optimistic messages’ sought by the White House. In one instance, CDC Director Robert Redfield and his scientists were accused of trying to ‘hurt the president’ with their reports about COVID-19, according to POLITICO. The reported interference was learned a day after it was revealed that the same group of Trump loyalists were seeking to muzzle Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert.  Since being named spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, Michael Caputo, the Republican Party operative and former Trump campaign official, and his staff have...

In addition, Disney thanked the Turpan Bureau of Public Security in the movie's credits. Turpan runs the camps, which are branded by the government as "re-education" camps, despite evidence and testimonies of the human rights atrocities that are inflicted upon the Uighur population. When Georgia passed an anti-abortion law in 2019 to ban abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, banning most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, Disney President Bob Iger suggested Disney may have to boycott filming in the state...

Though they managed to extend their Eastern Conference semifinal series with a Game 4 win over the Heat, it seems to be a matter of when, not if, the Bucks will be eliminated from the 2020 NBA playoffs. Milwaukee lost the first three games of the series, and no NBA team has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit. As soon as the final buzzer goes off to signal the end of the Bucks’ 2019-20 campaign, one of the most important offseasons in franchise history will begin. It’s a bury good way to get rid of the city’s most hated transit hub. Many of the 250,000 commuters who use the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Eighth Avenue daily would love to see the ugly, inefficient facility disappear. An audacious replacement proposal submitted by a major engineering and design firm would give them their wish by moving it underground. But the public never heard about it — until now. The PA wants to replace the obsolete, overcrowded terminal, which agency executive director Pat Foye gently calls “functionally obsolete.” Comic John Oliver more colorfully termed it “the single worst place on planet earth.” The PA is considering three alternatives for either modernizing the terminal and putting an office...

Everything he touches dies. In covering administration appointees to various government agencies, it seems like certain phrases are coming up a lot more often then they used to. We seem to quite often be hearing that a new Donald Trump hire is "paranoid," or "obsessed," or the shrieking offspring of a wolverine and a industrial shredder, or "carries a whip around his government office for some reason." The phrase "This person is supremely qualified for the job they now hold," however, seems to have gone the way of the thylacine. Apropos of that, we've been waiting to see what the results would be from Trump's installation of a Steve Bannon-associated hack as head of the U.S. Agency of Global Media (USAGM),...
Reuters September 3, 2020 0 Comments The head of the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday accused Democrats of hurting the poor with policies aimed at fighting climate change, and said the agency would keep supporting development and deregulation if President Donald Trump is re-elected. The speech, on the EPA’s 50th anniversary, laid out agency priorities if Trump wins a second term in office. It reflected the gaping ideological divide between Democrats and the administration, which has loosened regulations for pollution and vehicle fuel efficiency and promoted oil and gas drilling. “Some members of former administrations and progressives in Congress have elevated single issue advocacy – in many cases focused just on climate change … over the interests of communities...

With Carmelo Anthony set to be a free agent this offseason, there appears to be interest from the Knicks in bringing him back to New York.  When Carmelo Anthony used to play for the New York Knicks, he’d light up Madison Square Garden on a nightly basis. Matter of fact, if you bring up his name on 7th Avenue in Manhattan, there’s a good chance the food vendors will continue to sing his praises. That’s how much ‘Melo’ meant to the city back when he was draining 3-pointers from all over the floor. With all that being said, could we end up seeing back in New York at the start of next season? In an era when there are near-daily calls for reforms in policing and the justice system as a whole, we don’t give nearly enough attention to the role the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has in what happens after an officer involved shooting. The agency has full discretion to decide whether or not – and to what degree – an officer is held accountable in use of force investigations, yet hardly anyone considers that the GBI has assumed a duty that was never delegated.  It used to be that...
No, that's not a living dinosaur. It's a 100-pound alligator snapping turtle. Researchers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission captured the rambunctious, prehistoric-looking reptile near Gainesville, Fla. The Suwannee alligator snapping turtle, also known as Macrochelys suwanniensis, is a new species the agency helped describe in 2014, according to a Facebook post. In one trap, the government agency caught a 100-pound male and a 46-pound female. Another trap captured a 64-pound male. Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) had five minutes to question President Donald Trump’s hand-picked Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Monday afternoon and she didn’t waste a second of it.  The congresswoman’s first question seemed like a softball. “What is the cost of a first-class postage stamp?” she asked. DeJoy got that one right by answering $0.55, but it went downhill fast from there. He didn’t know how much it cost to send a postcard or a square envelope. Laughing uncomfortably, DeJoy admitted, “I will submit that I know very little about postage and stamps.”  After DeJoy failed to answer a few more basic inquiries about the agency he runs, Porter got to a more salient question. “Do you know, about within a...

Washington (CNN)Watching television in his private dining room earlier this month, President Donald Trump was surprised at the latest federal entity being skewered in a segment on cable news: his own United States Postal Service.Of all the government agencies, Trump mused to aides, according to a person familiar with the encounter, how had the Post Office become so controversial? It's a question with a long answer that rests partly on Trump's own actions. Once an aspect of daily life so reliable it went mostly unnoticed, the Postal Service now finds itself at the center of a political scandal so grave that, according to election officials and voting experts, the integrity of the election is at stake. This week, Trump privately shrugged off...

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a high-dollar donor to President Donald Trump, appeared to contradict the warnings his own agency made to 46 states three weeks ago about its ability to deliver election mail on time as he testified Friday before the Senate. “The Postal Service will deliver every ballot,” DeJoy, who has given more than $1 million to the GOP and committees supporting the president, told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. DeJoy added that he supports mail-in voting by mail — a practice which Trump has routinely attacked without evidence as vulnerable to rampant fraud while availing himself of the practice — and plans to vote by mail himself this November. “The American people can feel confident that the Postal Service will deliver on this election,” DeJoy told the committee, committing to Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., that his agency would deliver 95% of mail within 24...
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has emerged as a central figure in basically everything that's gone wrong at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS)—from selection of an unqualified postmaster general right down to the mysterious removal of mailboxes across the country. As leader of the White House task force to overhaul the agency, Mnuchin's role appears to be total. The latest piece of information came from former USPS Inspector General David Williams, who told the Congressional Progressive Caucus at a hearing that Mnuchin had a hand in the recent removal of iconic blue mailboxes across the country. Williams called removal of the blue boxes "the most interesting of all," saying his understanding was that "Secretary Mnuchin wanted that...
Gleyber Torres’ defensive issues are becoming a big issue for the Yankees. In the end, they could cost New York the services of D.J. LeMahieu. The Yankees moved Gleyber Torres back to shortstop this season with the hopes that he could develop into a quality defender. Instead, he’s played like the worst defensive shortstop in baseball. His inability to defend the infield’s most important position could become a big problem for the Yankees when the offseason arrives. Defense has never been Torres’ strong suit, but Yankees officials hoped for his athleticism to translate better to his glovework in 2020. The reality is that Torres leads American League shortstops with six errors this season. His six errors have put undue stress...

Igor Derysh August 21, 2020 9:00AM (UTC) Maine farmers have blamed recent changes at the U.S. Postal Service after receiving thousands of dead baby chicks due to shipping delays. The state's postal workers blamed the slowdown on a bill championed by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, that "weakened the Postal Service" — and faces a tough re-election battle this fall. At least 4,800 chicks shipped to Maine farmers through the USPS have arrived dead in recent weeks, the Portland Press Herald reported. : "It's one more of the consequences of this disorganization, this sort of chaos they've created at the post office and nobody thought through when they were thinking of slowing down the mail," Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, told the...

Hours after landing along with a CFSL team, the central agency by afternoon had already met with the Mumbai Police, collected documents, including Sushant’s diary, laptop and mobile and also interrogated a few of the key witnesses. Two months and a week since Sushant was found dead at his Bandra home, the CBI team has sped up the investigation after the Supreme Court’s nod on Wednesday to the federal agency probe. The CBI team is expected to camp in Mumbai for 10 days, and they have their plans ready as they grouped into several teams, each with its task deliniated. Sushant Singh Rajput’s Sister...

As relayed by The Athletic‘s Fred Katz via Twitter, Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard spoke about his desire to retain Bertans during his year-end press conference on Wednesday. “He’s been a priority. Now left with a “skeleton crew” to process vital paperwork like naturalization forms, a former Obama adviser tells Forbes, the layoffs are set to fulfill a goal of White House aide and noted white supremacist Stephen Miller and force the nation’s legal immigration system “to a halt.” USCIS had initially been set to furlough employees on Aug. 3 until revised estimates showed the agency...
As the coronavirus pandemic hit, workers around the country flooded the office of a federal watchdog with reports that they’d been punished for speaking out about unsafe workplace conditions. But that office had just slashed its staff and has been unable to handle the huge influx of complaints. That was the key finding of a report released on Tuesday by the inspector general for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the agency tasked with protecting and promoting workplace safety. The IG’s office found a massive spike in whistleblower complaints submitted to the agency since the coronavirus outbreak began, many alleging employer retaliation against workers who reported unsafe working conditions.  But OSHA’s whistleblower office was significantly understaffed, the IG found, and...
At this point, it should come as no surprise that the vast majority of Congressional Republicans have responded to the Trump administration’s gutting of the U.S. Postal Service with near silence. The president openly admitted last week that he is blocking additional funding to the USPS to undermine its ability to handle the coming surge of mail-in votes this fall. U.S. mail delivery has also slowed down dramatically nationwide since his handpicked postmaster general, Louis DeJoy, a major GOP donor who has been in frequent communication with the Republican National Committee, began instituting a raft of new policies for reasons of “efficiency.” These have included cutting overtime pay for postal workers, removing sorting machines from postal facilities, and eliminating mail boxes. Yet...
Washington — Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will testify before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Friday, amid rising concerns about recent operational changes to the U.S. Postal Service which have led to delays in mail delivery. "As Ranking Member on the only Senate Committee with oversight of the Postal Service, I will continue pressing for answers on Mr. DeJoy's recent directives and their impacts on all Americans, who rely on the Postal Service for prescriptions, running...

By Jason Lange (Reuters) - A U.S. Postal Service internal watchdog is looking into service disruptions that have slowed mail delivery ahead of a presidential election that could see up to half of U.S. voters casting ballots by mail. The new Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, has ordered changes in mail delivery policies since taking the reins at the agency in June, which has fueled concerns over the Postal Service's ability to handle the ballots. Here is a summary of the changes: * Starting in July, delivery drivers have had to leave at scheduled times even if their trucks are not fully loaded with mail, according to internal Postal Service documents and officers at postal unions. Previously, trucks often waited for...
(CNN)For once, Donald Trump is right in claiming that he has done something nobody else has been able to do. He has put the US Postal Service on the front pages of every newspaper in the country. That is not to say that what the Postal Service has been doing since before our country was even officially established did not matter — it did, of course. It is just that until now, it was largely taken for granted. With less than three months to go until Nov. 3, the cash-strapped United States Postal Service has been thrust into the center of the presidential election. The independent federal agency is facing financial setbacks made worse by the coronavirus pandemic — as well as fears of disenfranchisement with more and more COVID-19-wary voters turning to mail-in ballots. Here’s a look into how USPS’s crisis unfolded. How is the USPS funded? Congress created the USPS to replace the old Post Office Department in 1972, making it a permanent fixture of the federal government. The agency, however, isn’t funded by tax dollars — it instead “relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations,” according to its website....
We can blame the coronavirus pandemic and shelter-in-place order for a lot of things, but thankfully, it has not produced a sudden invasion of rats. We might be more aware of them than usual, in our home-all-the-time state, but the number of rats we have now is about the same as in any given year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had warned of waves of rats flooding into residential areas early on in the pandemic, and some cities, including New York and New Orleans, saw masses of rats pouring into areas in search of food. Officials cited the closure of restaurants and thus the emptier garbage bins, a rat’s favorite dining spot, as the cause. Without their usual...

Nancy Pelosi is recalling the House from its summer recess to vote on a bill prohibiting the U.S. Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service, as the removal of mailboxes across the country sparks fears that Donald Trump's appointee to run the service is deliberately slowing deliveries.  The action comes amid growing concerns that the Trump White House is trying to undermine the agency during the coronavirus pandemic while states expand mail-in voting options. In a letter to Democratic lawmakers Sunday evening, Pelosi also called on her colleagues to appear at a post office in their district on Tuesday for a coordinated news event. “In a time of a pandemic, the Postal Service is Election Central....

In the battle for air supremacy, a bald eagle just proved that technology is no match for brute strength. The giant bird recently attacked a drone, destroying it and sending it to the bottom of Lake Michigan. A bald eagle in Michigan's Upper Peninsula "launched an airborne attack" on a drone operated by the state's Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) late last month, the department said Thursday. During the squabble, the eagle tore off the drone's propeller, making the device plummet 162 feet through the air and into the lake.  The "brazen" eagle versus EGLE clash took place while environmental quality analyst and drone pilot Hunter King was mapping erosion along the shoreline.
