SAN ANTONIO – As San Antonio continues to grow you might have noticed a new building on Broadway just north of downtown that looks like it’s made of glass and wood. It’s called The Soto and it is one of the most technologically and ecologically high-end buildings in San Antonio. “It’s Good for the environment, not only in San Antonio but the whole world,” John S. Beauchamp of Hixon Properties said. The timber makes the building looks sleek, modern and cool, but it is so much more than that. “When you’re building out of mass timber you’re building out of young farm grown trees, taking carbon dioxide out of the air which is then being stored in the building -- our building actually has...

NORTH LAWNDALE — Village Leadership Academy students celebrated a historic victory recently after persuading the Chicago Park District Board to rename Douglas Park in honor of Frederick Douglass and Anna Murray Douglass. This is the first time a Chicago public park has been renamed, setting a precedent for the city to strip the names of other controversial historical figures from parks, streets, schools and libraries. It was a years-long battle starting in 2017 when the students, many of whom live in North Lawndale, first learned their neighborhood park was named not for abolitionist Frederick Douglass but for Stephen A. Douglas, who advocated for the expansion of slavery. Douglas, a Civil War-era senator from Illinois, is not known to have owned slaves...
SAN ANTONIO – Just getting on stage takes a lot of courage; now imagine doing it by yourself in front of an audience. That’s what some local performers are preparing to do during this season at The Public Theater of San Antonio. Actor Rick Sanchez, who put on the first one-person show of the theatre season, says a lot goes on behind the scenes to perform solo. “(You have) to demand the stage for so long, and there’s nobody there to help you or to or to guide you or to interact with,” Sanchez said. “It just required a lot of attention and stamina for sure.” Sanchez was the lead actor for the “Buyer & Cellar” show that ran for...
After successfully acquiring Paul George and Kawhi Leonard last summer, the Los Angeles Clippers have managed to turn themselves from an average team to a legitimate title contender in the Western Conference. With two All-Stars and a quality supporting cast, most people considered the Clippers as the heavy favorites to bring home the Larry O’Brien Trophy in the 2019-20 NBA season. Unfortunately, they failed to live up to expectations. Aside from failing to capture their first NBA championship title, the Clippers were even unable to advance to the Western Conference Finals after being upset by the Denver Nuggets in the second round. After suffering a huge disappointment, the drama has started to build around George and the Clippers. Aside from...
The 2020 Emmys were on fire — almost literally. For one, it was the first mostly-virtual ceremony in the event’s 72 years, as it had to adjust to the pandemic. For another, Zendaya made history at 24 as the youngest woman to win the Best Actress in a drama prize — even if her fans railed against The Post for misinterpreting the word “upset” in our reporting on her surprise triumph over the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Laura Linney. But it also nearly burned down the venue, LA’s Staples Center. Host Jimmy Kimmel, 52, did a bit with Aniston, 51, where they sprayed an envelope with Lysol and set it on fire to “sanitize it.” Although they had...

Some people think they’ve hit a dead-end when the industry in which they’ve built their career downsizes, temporarily closes or shuts down. But “there’s no reason to lose hope,” said Kenneth Johnson, president of East Coast Executives, a recruitment firm based in Harlem. “Individuals in any industry can learn to pull out their transferable skills and use them to get a job.” The hard part is identifying what you have to offer. You’ll need to open your mind to how your skills could apply to jobs off your radar, and be willing to ask for help. The good news is that many people have done it successfully. Here’s proof. Acting out March 13 was a terrible day for 34-year-old Jay...
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Walkers, bikers, runners and skaters took advantage Saturday of a new ‘car free’ route stretching from the east end of Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach. Officials said the Golden Gate Park Slow Streets project will provide the last link in a protected path for cyclists stretching from the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. The route — part of a plan by the city to give residents safe, socially distanced exercise options during the COVID-19 pandemic — was unveiled Friday and goes into full effect this weekend. “Slow Streets has been a great program for San Franciscans during COVID, and this expansion will provide more room for our residents to get out, exercise,...
A climber without any safety equipment tonight used his bare hands to climb up the tallest skyscraper in central Paris - before being arrested at the top. Videos posted on social media showed the unidentified man scaling the 689ft Montparnasse Tower on Friday evening, as emergency services including police cars and ambulances scrambled to the iconic building in the French capital. 'He set off from the bottom soon after 7pm and didn't stop,' said one of numerous onlookers who snatched pictures and video and posted them on social media. 'It looked incredibly dangerous, and some thought it might be a suicide attempt, but he just kept going.' The man wore a white T-shirt and shorts as he hauled...
Late Thursday evening, a video was uploaded to Reddit’s PublicFreakout forum, showcasing a recent robbery at a Little Caesars. Employees recorded the burglar while he struggled to open a cash register. In the background, one staff member can be heard calling the police while the other staff member jokingly critiques the robber for his ineffective method. Hide The nearly one and a half minute clip is both suspenseful and hilarious. “That’s all you got, bro? $60, bro…,” an employee asks the robber who is still struggling to reach all of the money in the machine. After nearly a minute of trying to pull the register’s drawer completely open, the robber gives up. “That’s all you’re gonna take?” the employee asks...
A security guard at a federal building for the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in New York City pointed a gun at protesters in a shocking threat caught on video. On Wednesday a protest to abolish ICE unfolded in Manhattan following a whistleblower complaint that immigrant women detained in Georgia allegedly received hysterectomies without consent. Demonstrators gathered inside the Jacob K. Javits Federal building at 26 Federal Plaza to decry the allegedly forced gynecological procedures where they raised their fists, chanted in unison and blared blowhorns. Video from the protest shows the moment a female security guard brandishes a gun and points it directly at the protesters. A female security guard at the Javits Federal building in...
A Massachusetts inspector found in March that the elevator that killed a university lecturer had a stop-switch problem, according to information released by the Office of Public Safety and Inspections.  Boston University lecturer, Carrier O'Connor, 38, was crushed to death Monday evening while trying to load a bed frame and a mattress into the elevator of her 1920s building at 1140 Commonwealth Avenue in Allston. At the time of the accident, management at the building confirmed that the elevator had been inspected recently.  And according to the Boston Business Journal, which obtained the report from the inspections office, an inspector found a stop-switch problem with the elevator on March 26 during the elevator's annual inspection.  According to the violation notice,...

The NBA head coaching carousel never stops spinning. Despite the New York Knicks (Tom Thibodeau), Brooklyn Nets (Steve Nash) and Cleveland Cavaliers (J.B. Bickerstaff) all filling their vacancies over the last few months, the league still currently has six job openings. As something of a Russell Westbrook whisperer (or at least, as close as one can get to assuming that title), Donovan is used to building an offense around a superstar who can’t shoot. That might help him to some degree in Philadelphia, since neither Ben Simmons nor Joel Embiid is a capable...

Donald Trump has a long track record of pushing officials in New York and other cities to yield to his demands, but he doesn’t always get his way. Take the case of an old building in Los Angeles that he bought a stake in, where the local school board thwarted Trump’s attempt to build yet another massive tower. The building was the Ambassador Hotel, a rundown property most...
A Boston University lecturer had just moved into her apartment and was moving a bed frame and mattress when the building's elevator crushed her to death. Carrie O'Connor, 38, was taking her belongings to her apartment in the 1920s building on Monday evening when the accident occurred.  Authorities said she became trapped in the doorway of the first floor and the elevator, according to a police report, obtained by the Boston Globe.  O'Connor was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was extracted by Boston firefighters.  In the report, police wrote that O'Connor's 'mattress and frame were also removed from the scene and held in the garage area'. The items are being held at this time 'as evidence,' police...
Beirut faced fresh misery today as a third fire broke out in the space of a week in a city still reeling from the catastrophic port explosion which killed nearly 200 people last month.  Black clouds of smoke were pouring from the futuristic Zaha Hadid-designed shopping centre today on the main road that passes by the port in central Beirut.  The cause of the fire is not clear, but firefighters doused the bright red flames with water hoses fired from a crane into the smouldering facade of the building.  Three fires in the last week have brought fresh anguish to a city still in shock from the August 4 blast that devastated Beirut and unleashed a wave of outrage at...
CHICAGO (CBS)– Six people were injured in a high-rise fire in The Loop early Tuesday morning. The building, located near Maggie Daley Park, caught fire sometime after 12:30 a.m. The fire started on the 32nd floor and it appears to be electrical in nature, but the cause is unknown. While responding to the fire, five firefighters became stuck in an elevator. Two people who lived on the 32nd floor of the building are in the hospital in serious to critical condition. Most of the people injured are suffering from smoke inhalation. A resident’s pet died in the fire.
The number of New York  parents asking that their kids only attend class remotely this year has jumped past 40 percent just days before the start of the new COVID-19-battered academic year, the Department of Education said Monday. A total of 422,190 — or 42 percent — of city kids have now opted for the format, new numbers show. The remote-only requests have risen by 158,000 in the past four weeks, according to DOE figures. That compares to the 579,698 students — or roughly 58 percent — who are now planning to  alternate between attending class inside their school’s building and remote instruction. That’s down sharply from 74 percent in mid-August. Mayor de Blasio has staunchly backed a partial...
A new documentary premiering Sept. 15 on PBS will ensure that you never look at construction the same way again. Produced and directed by Texas filmmaker Chelsea Hernandez, Building the American Dream tells the story of Texas’ deadly construction industry through the tragedies and triumphs of immigrant and mixed-status families, some of whom lost loved ones on the job. Viewers learn about the toxic stew brewing in Texas—its anti-union lawmakers, desperation to attract business, and limited regulations—that puts undocumented workers in the crosshairs, forcing them to battle harsh working conditions with almost no workplace protections. Hernandez started kicking around the idea for the documentary when she returned to her hometown of Austin in 2009 after living in New...

As Bruce Karstadt sat on the front porch of his apartment building, gazing across the street at the locked-down American Swedish Institute and longing to get back inside, he learned something that surprised him. COVID had closed ASI’s campus, shutting the doors on the palatial Turnblad Mansion and the sleek Nelson addition and leaving the large parking lot empty. Except, as the president and CEO noticed, “It was empty of cars, but it was really pretty full of vibrant activity. “There were Somali families there with their kids who were learning how to ride a bicycle or rollerblade. Every now and then, you’d see someone giving parking lessons to someone who must have been preparing for a driver’s test. It...
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Southern California’s Jewish community is set to ring in the Jewish New Year with a new twist on an ancient tradition. On Sunday, Sept. 20, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles along with IKAR will hold its first-ever “Shofar Wave”, which will involve placing people on various street corners around L.A. and asking them to blow the shofar – a ram’s horn used like a trumpet – to mark Rosh Hashanah. Traditionally, synagogues across the city and the world would be packed for what is one of Judaism’s high holy days, when religious leaders say synagogue attendance would be at its highest. The construction of Trump Tower may have been Donald Trump’s greatest achievement, but it was a disaster for the city’s artistic legacy. To build his skyscraper, Trump first had to knock down the Bonwit Teller building, a luxurious limestone building erected in 1929. The face of the building featured two huge Art Deco friezes that the Metropolitan Museum of Art wanted to preserve. The museum asked Trump...
SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio city staff and the city council are expected to move into a renovated historic City Hall building by December 2020. Assistant City Manager Rod Sanchez says there have been a few delays along the way, but growing pains are expected when you deal with bringing an 1800s-era building to 2020 standards. “That building has a great rich history, but it really hasn’t been touched for almost 90 years. The building itself is about a hundred thirty years old,” Sanchez said. Renovations by Guido Brothers Construction Company started back in the summer of 2018 and were initially expected to take around 18 months from start to finish. The city council approved a budget of $38 million...
(CBS Miami) — The Miami Dolphins last won the AFC East in 2008. The division has belonged to the New England Patriots for over a decade, with the Buffalo Bills making a little noise last season. The New York Jets have been an afterthought, albeit an interesting one. But this season could be different. For starters, the AFC East is wide open. Tom Brady is no longer the Patriots quarterback. And it’s unclear whether the duo of Bill Belichick and Cam Newton, who will take over, will be as effective. The Bills, coming off a wild card appearance, are legitimate contenders. And the Jets should show some improvement. Most importantly, the Fins have made the right moves to set themselves...
Last week, Westword celebrated — in what passes for a celebration these days — its 43rd anniversary in a new headquarters that’s a far cry from the space where we created our first weekly issue, which hit the streets on September 1, 1977. Our office then was on the second floor of a Victorian storefront at 1439 Market Street, right above a waterbed/hologram store, in a run-down part of downtown that had yet to be dubbed LoDo. Almost a century earlier, the space had been home to a brothel. Which, then and now, can sometimes seem like a far more respectable business than a newspaper. But don’t tell that to our new landlord: the Colorado State Land Board. Related Stories Westword...

British journalist Selina Scott found that out the hard way when she challenged his false claim that he wholly owned the Empire State Building. During a “reparations rebellion” protest in London, Extinction Rebellion and BLM climate change activists demanded that financial institutions pay reparations for their role in the slave trade. On Friday, the eco-warrior group took to the streets of the City of London for a so-called ‘Walk of Shame’ to denounce the historical ties to slavery between the Bank of England and other British financial institutions. In a Breitbart London exclusive video, one activist called for money in offshore accounts to be taken and handed out as reparations. The XR activist went on to suggest that the British Museum return all the artefacts that were “stolen” and transform the building into the “British Museum of Slavery and Empire”. Later in the protest,...

The thought that one more person might have survived the bombing was a glimmer of hope in the downtrodden city. Those hopes were shattered on Saturday when the Chilean team said no one was alive beneath the rubble of the lead search and rescue efforts. “Unfortunately, today, we can say that there is no sign inside the building,” Francisco Lermonta, head of the Chilean rescue team Tobos, told reporters at a news conference. The owner of a Minneapolis salon set on fire during riots over George Floyd's death in May, said recently that rather than helping her rebuild her business, state and local officials opted to tear down the building and stick her with the bill. "I haven't gotten anything, not a penny," Flora Westbrooks, the owner of Flora's Hair Designs, told "Fox & Friends" on Thursday after host Peter Doocy asked her how much aid she had received from the government. "[The] bill is going to be over $200,000 just for tearing things down and putting up a fence there,...
If this headline seems very familiar, that's because it is. 2020's Ridiculously Resilient Ridge of heat in the Western U.S. is back for an encore this weekend, and in some areas the heat will be even more intense than the historic heat wave just weeks ago, when Death Valley reached the highest temperature ever reliably measured on Earth: 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The Los Angeles National Weather Service issued a strongly worded statement to Southern Californians on Wednesday warning of an "exceptionally dangerous event" — explaining that it will be even hotter than the recent mid-August heat wave.  "Temperatures this high, and this widespread, are rarely ever seen in the area. All daytime outdoor activities should be limited or cancelled," the...

Turkish authorities razed to the ground the historic St. Georgios Christian church late Wednesday, an iconic structure known as the “Hagia Sophia of Bursa.” The Greek Orthodox Church of St. Georgios had been restored and transformed into a cultural center by the Nilüfer Municipality in Bursa. The municipality took over the church in 2006 and invested some 2 million Turkish lira in restorations, reopening it as the Özlüce Cultural House. Seven years ago, however, an Islamic organization called the regional Directorate General of Pious Foundations filed a lawsuit to gain ownership rights over the church and in 2013 proprietorship was assigned to the İnesiye Village Mosque Foundation. After the transfer, the building received no regular maintenance and was allowed to...

Shutterstock Every state has a skyscraper that locals hate.  Some buildings are considered ugly because they have weird design quirks, like the AT&T Building in Nashville and the ultra-thin Wells Fargo building in Salt Lake City.  Others are too bland and thus considered eyesores, like One Shell Square in New Orleans, Louisiana, and SunTrust Plaza in Richmond, Virginia.  Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. All across the country, there are tall and striking buildings ... but not all of them are visually appealing.  Just like every state is home to an ugly building, every state has an ugly skyscraper. Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell looks at Mayor Ted Wheeler during a press conference on August 30, 2020. Nathan Howard/Getty Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell released a statement on Tuesday, calling on elected officials to "do their part to draw a line in the sand and hold people accountable."  Lovell's statement came after another night of riots in the city, in which protesters threw burning newspapers at a storefront on the bottom of the mayor's apartment building.  Lovell didn't specify who he meant, but the local district attorney has been criticized for not prosecuting low-level offenders arrested at the protests.  Protests have been held nightly in the city since the police killing of Black man George Floyd in...

Beijing — The discovery of the coronavirus in the bathroom of a vacant apartment in southern China is being taken as evidence that the pathogen spread up through sewage pipes after a toilet was flushed in another unit. The finding is adding to concerns over the virus' ability to spread in tiny airborne particles in enclosed spaces, and not just in the same room, or even on the same floor. The Chinese still remember the SARS virus outbreak caused by a man who visited the Amoy Gardens apartment building in Hong Kong 17 years ago. His visit to one apartment eventually left more than 300 people in the building sick, and the virus, similar to the one that causes COVID-19, is...

An 86-year-old woman is seen waiting for the elevator in the hallway as the man stands next to her with a cell phone in his hand. When the elevator door opens, the woman begins walking toward it. That’s when the man is seen reaching for her necklace and yanking it off of her neck after a brief struggle. ...
WEST RIDGE — RefugeeOne has helped newly arrived refugees resettle in Chicago, often finding them housing and jobs in the nonprofit’s home base of Uptown, for more than three decades. But the center of refugee life in Chicago has shifted from Uptown — where development and gentrification have driven up housing prices — to neighborhoods like West Ridge, Rogers Park and Albany Park. Forced to leave its longtime Uptown offices to make way for redevelopment, RefugeeOne has moved into the West Ridge community, thanks to the help of a donor who gifted the group an office building. “In the last 10 years, Uptown has become more expensive,” said Jims Porter, advocacy manager for RefugeeOne. “It’s been years since...

On the second night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump resorted once again to the favorite trick in his bag: a televised surprise.  An impromptu naturalization ceremony put on as part of the Tuesday night festivities was, as a political matter, an attempt to show a softer side of a president with one of the most anti-immigration records in recent memory.  It also appeared to be a finely tuned bit of trolling: the act itself was likely a violation of federal law that prohibits government employees from using taxpayer resources for political purposes (though the White House insisted it wasn't). And it gave Trump and its legions of devoted fans a reason to tweet American flag emojis and make...

As a result of the negligence by the owners and the city, 'the defendants robbed Erica Tishman of her life, they robbed Steven Tishman of his wife, they robbed three children of their mother and a grandchild of his grandmother,' the court papers allege.  Tishman...
A small, rainbow colored meteorite discovered in Costa Rica last year may be harboring the building blocks of life. The cosmic rock was once connected to washing machine-sized asteroid that fell to the Earth on April 23, 2019, scattering across two villages – La Palmera and Aguas Zarcas. The asteroid was a remnant of the early solar system and the meteorite, called Aguas Zarcas, could be made of complex carbon compounds. Scientists believe it could contain complex organic compounds because it is made of the same dust from the early Milky Way that was found in a separate meteor that exploded over Murchison, Australia in 1969, which was found to have amino acids. However the team hopes to find proteins...

MOUNTAIN VIEW — A 407-unit apartment complex project poised to be one of the densest and tallest residential developments in the city is moving closer to actually being built after making several design changes. First proposed in 2018 as a 412-unit, 116-foot tall residential building on a 2.5-acre site at 400 Logue Avenue to replace a dilapidated suburban office park in the city’s East Whisman neighborhood, the project is likely to go through even more changes before it reaches the city council. But the building — now revised to stand 95-feet tall — is not the only high-density housing project the city is taking on: A 583-unit apartment complex on San Antonio Road is under construction, as are the 623-unit apartments...
“In France, we build more with concrete and stone than with wood,” he said. “When I learned about Japanese building culture, I realized how fantastic structures could be built with wood. This material that we considered an old material, without innovation, was actually super smart. This excited me. “ In 2016, Boitouzet founded the materials science company Woodoo in Paris, France, which modernizes wood to give it new properties. Its aim is to transform the construction industry by replacing steel with wood, for example. Unlike other building materials, such as stone or concrete that contains sand, wood is a renewable resource, making it an attractive sustainable building material. Building more with trees could also help curb the construction industry’s large...

Kolfage first launched the "Trump Wall" campaign in December, and $20 million was pledged from more than 300,000 people. His original goal was to raise $1 billion and hand over the money to the federal government to subsidize the cost of the wall. But last Friday, Kolfage changed course and announced...
There are no laptops at meetings in the Pentagon. There are no whiteboards, either. No connectivity, and almost no diversity. These problems damage the speed and quality of our military planning and decisionmaking. If we don’t correct them soon, we will jeopardize our national security. Take connectivity. Even though my office was in the E-Ring, the cynosure of American military power, I had no Wi-Fi access. To call someone, I had to use a hard line. To access the internet, I had to jack my computer into the wall. This was not the result of heightened...

As a graduate social work student, advocacy is a big part of my work. I recently read a MinnPost article, “The fence restricting access to the Minnesota State Capitol isn’t coming down anytime soon after all,” written by Peter Callaghan, and it raised some concerns for me. The fence around the Capitol is an impediment to the people and it is keeping us out of our own house. I understand that precautions are necessary at this time due to the global pandemic to reduce risk for personnel who work in the Capitol building and the public visitors. However, I find the fence to be a very literal barrier for the citizens of this city to feel that they are involved...
