The Pac-12 is having its Big Ten moment. The unified group of conference executives, presidents, athletic directors and coaches that had navigated the pandemic for six months has fractured, with deep frustration at multiple levels, sources told the Hotline. The aggravation boiled over after the presidents declined Friday to set a start date for the season, likely delaying the season openers until Nov. 7. Many teams had hoped to play Oct. 31. They felt they could do it safely, thanks to the daily antigen tests available at the end of this month. They felt the players could be ready, at least at many schools. And some officials wanted to break the news to the public this morning, sources said, grabbing...

Pac-12 football in 2020 remains on hold, at least officially. The university presidents and chancellors did not vote Friday on a return to competition but are expected to reconvene in coming days. It is widely expected that they will approve a fall season with either Oct. 31 or Nov. 7 as the start date and the conference championship on Dec. 19. The CEOs also declined Friday to approve a return for Pac-12 basketball, which has been postponed through 2020. However, with the NCAA pushing the season back two weeks, to Nov. 25, the conference likely will revise its calendar to align with the rest of major college basketball. Meanwhile, the Pac-12 is the only member of the Power Five currently...

Many Puerto Ricans relocated to Florida after Hurricane Maria and could be key in deciding the outcome of the critical swing state. Donald Trump on Friday claimed he was the "best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico," despite personally blocking funding to the U.S. territory for years, even as the island tried to rebuild from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. At a White House news conference, Trump announced a new aid package supposedly intended to help Puerto Rico's recovery process. The money, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement earlier on Friday, will be used to "replace thousands of miles of transmission and distribution...
MOSINEE, Wis. -- President Donald Trump stepped up his rhetoric on cultural issues, aiming to boost enthusiasm among rural Wisconsin voters as he tries to repeat his path to victory four years ago.Making his fifth visit to the pivotal battleground state this year, Trump views success in the state's less-populated counties as critical to another term. He held a rally Thursday evening in Mosinee, in central Wisconsin, an area of the state that shifted dramatically toward Republicans in 2016, enabling Trump to overcome even greater deficits in urban and suburban parts of the state.Trump has increasingly used his public appearances to elevate cultural issues important to his generally whiter and older base, as he hinges his campaign on turning out...

Projecting how a collection of university presidents and chancellors will rule on athletic matters is a fool’s game of the highest order. The Hotline is going there anyhow — not because we want to but because trying to guess what the Pac-12’s CEOs will decide this afternoon is an effective vehicle for explaining the myriad issues and complexities. First off, the timing of the meeting is essential to understanding what might not happen. It was scheduled before the developments Wednesday, when governors Gavin Newsom and Kate Brown provided high-level clearance for the California and Oregon schools, respectively, to return to practice in good old 11-on-11 fashion and not just against air. The meeting was scheduled for today because of basketball....
Lakers vs. Nuggets isn’t the Western Conference Finals we were expecting. These are the lineup, matchup and strategic issues that will decide a winner. The Western Conference Finals are here. It’s not the Battle for Los Angeles that many envisioned since last July, but instead, the Lakers taking on the Denver Nuggets for the right to represent their conference against the winner of Celtics vs. Heat. There are any number of factors that will contribute to who advances, but we want to focus on these four questions in particular. LA’s defense was slightly more solid with Davis at center (106.7 points per 100 non-garbage time possessions, per Cleaning the Glass) than power forward (107.8) during the regular season. NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – This weekend should have been a blank slate — a bye week for every football team in the Big 12. Instead, there are two unexpected games scheduled for Saturday. The opening was meant to give all 10 teams a break between the pandemic-delayed season last weekend and the start of conference games September 26. The change in schedule of course was due to delays and postponements because of players testing positive for the novel coronavirus. THE GAMES — Baylor vs. Houston. The former Southwest Conference rivals are playing for the first time since 1995, the last season of that league. This sudden reunion, plus an additional home-and-home series, only came about last weekend after the Bears...

There never has been much doubt a 2020-21 Division I college basketball season would occur in some form, with an NCAA Tournament and a majority of programs finding a way to participate. The NCAA’s announcement Wednesday of a Nov. 25 start date for men’s and women’s basketball — with guidelines and requirements for staging a season — made that official. The NCAA was not in position, however, to offer a substantial degree of clarity regarding many of the variables. Will there be bubbles? Will there be non-conference games and early season tournaments? What impact will the loss of non-conference revenue have on programs in less wealthy conferences? What will the NCAA Tournament look like? Will it expand or contract? Will any conferences choose...

There has been much confusion about what the California teams are or aren’t allowed to do with regard to competing under state health restrictions. Gov. Gavin Newsom said in his news conference today that, “There is nothing in the state guidelines that denies the Pac-12 from having conference games” and he called any reporting to the contrary a “misrepresentation of the facts.” That’s true, a health department official confirmed to the Hotline after the news conference. Technically, he said, the state allows games to be played at the intercollegiate level: Full-squad, full-contact 22-man games. The problem — and it’s a super-colossal problem — is with practice. According to Section 5 of the guidelines: “IHEs...

As the United States continues to face the novel coronavirus pandemic with no significant guidance from the Trump administration, states and cities have operated with a number of different guidelines (or lack thereof) in order to contain the virus and keep people safe. As colleges have begun reopening for in-person classes, we’ve seen spikes in coronavirus cases leading to campus quarantines and semester closures. Related to colleges, people have hotly debated whether college athletics—and particularly Big Ten college football—will resume amid the pandemic. As of Wednesday morning, the Big Ten presidents and chancellors voted unanimously to resume the football season the weekend of Oct. 24, as reported by the Star Tribune.  As of now, the conference plans for an eight-week season, with a Big...

I’m sure the NBA league office wanted the Western Conference Finals to be a battle of Los Angeles. A big-market rivalry with elite star power on display? Yes, please. Instead, the league will have the near-anonymous Denver Nuggets taking on LeBron James and the Lakers after the Clippers choked away a 3-1 series lead. It’s official: The Big Ten is back, as of Oct. 23. Your move, Pac-12. The next few weeks are critical — no, they’re beyond critical: they’re everything. The conference cannot force-feed the narrative that it cares less about football than its Power Five peers. It cannot let the jokes about there being a ‘Power Four’ become reality. It cannot get left behind. Pac-12 football must return this fall. There is no choice. Forget a winter season. Playing in January would be difficult to pull off with a partner. But all alone — with the other conferences having completed their seasons, with a national champion having been crowned — it makes zero sense. Actually, it would make bad sense. Imagine the...

The Big Ten is apparently set to reverse its decision to postpone football season until springtime amid the pandemic, according to University of Nebraska president Ted Carter, who let the information slip on a hot microphone at a press conference on Tuesday. By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — We’ll be breaking down the Celtics-Heat matchup in the very near future, with the two teams set to square off in the Eastern Conference Finals starting Tuesday night. But for now, let’s focus on a feud away from the court between the two figureheads of both franchises. Of course we’re talking about the scintillating bad blood between Danny Ainge and Pat Riley. These guys really don’t like each other, and are not afraid to discuss that disdain. This feud means very little toward how the upcoming series will play out, but it’s always fun to see the vitriol between two of the NBA’s smartest and wisest architects. Riley detests Ainge for his...
The Pac-12’s return to competition depends on one unexpected development solving two momentous problems. The late September arrival of rapid-response antigen tests — two months earlier than anticipated — will allow football teams to test players for Covid-19 immediately before practice and games, thereby preventing on-field transmission by pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic players. Those same antigen tests, courtesy of a partnership with San Diego-based Quidel Corp., are central to clearing the other hurdle: Convincing health officials in Oregon and California to lift state restrictions and allow the six teams to move forward with practice and competition. The three NFL teams in California long ago received exemptions from the state, in large part because of their ability to test players on a...
Heat vs. Celtics is the Eastern Conference Finals matchup no one expected. These are the lineup, matchup and strategic issues that will decide a winner. The Eastern Conference Finals are finally set, and the matchup is a familiar one: Celtics vs. Heat. These two franchises met in the playoffs in 2010, 2011, and 2012, though obviously the participants in those games were markedly different than the ones that will decide this series. Virtually the only thing that is the same about either of the two teams is that the Heat are still coached by Erik Spoelstra and Udonis Haslem is still hanging around on the end of Miami’s bench. Fast forward to the Bucks series, and that group played …...

As pressure mounts on the Big Ten conference to hold its college football season this fall, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost thinks that Ohio State University should sue the Big Ten conference if the conference does not reverse course to start the fall college football season. Yost, a Republican, told CBS News in an interview that Ohio State has the legal basis to sue the Big Ten over a breach of contract. Yost said his office is researching contracts and they hope to have the conference's governing documents on Friday.  He added that his legal team "has seen enough" to determine that there is a cause for action and are "ready to recommend to Ohio State that they seek their legal...

The bar is high for Michael Schill, the new chair of the Pac-12 CEO Group. On July 1, he replaced Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano, whose two-year run in charge of the conference’s governing board produced significant changes on two key fronts: 1. Better collaboration between conference executives and campus officials — in particular, enhanced involvement of athletic directors on policy matters and decision making. 2. Increased transparency with regard to the complicated financial structure of the conference. Thus far, Schill appears intent on continuing the approach established by his predecessor. The conference side lost 13 employees to furloughs and five to layoffs. All told, Pac-12 headquarters went from 190 full-time employees to a remaining staff of 96.
