I’m getting to the point where there’s so much to stream that I don’t know what to watch first, old shows I want to catch up on, or new shows/movies so I can keep up with all the references on Twitter. But! I am filled with hope for the coming weeks, as there are a slew of interesting-looking trailers for movies I have been waiting to see. The United States vs. Billie Holiday I sort of wish this movie had been named “Strange Fruit” after Holiday’s 1939 song that drew the ire of the FBI, but guessing a lot of people don’t know about this part of Holiday’s life. The great jazz singer who struggled with drug addiction saw the government wreck her career using an undercover sting operation, all over a controversial song. The weekend before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is typically filled with community service events and gatherings to honor Dr. King's lifetime career of social justice work. In Virginia, that weekend also featured a holiday that commemorated the lives of two Confederate generals — until now.  Friday marked the first time in over 100 years that the Commonwealth of Virginia did not officially celebrate the former state holiday, Lee-Jackson Day. The holiday traditionally consisted of multiple days of parades and community events to honor Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson for being "defenders of causes."  Lee, according to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, was a commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and general in the Confederate Army. A slave owner, Lee is commonly revered for fighting against the north on behalf of his home state of Virginia.  After the Confederacy lost the Civil War, he...

Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson as "defenders of causes." OAKLAND (CBS SF) — There was some hopeful news Tuesday from Alameda County’s health officer — COVID-19 case rates rose after the holidays but may be stabilizing. Speaking to the Board of Supervisors at their regular meeting, Health Officer Dr. Nicholas Moss said the unadjusted case rate in the county was 35.5 per 100,000. The number of new cases in the county has dropped in recent days from a high 1,296 on Thursday to 413 on Monday, according to the county’s dashboard. “We might be through the worst,” Moss said. Still, stay-at-home orders remain in place for the county, region and state and it’s unclear when they will be lifted. Regionally, that’s because the capacity of beds in intensive care units is below the 15 percent required to lift the order. In the Bay Area region, ICU bed capacity was just 4.7 percent on Tuesday. Biographical dramas in the cinema that revolve around the life stories of musicians and singers have gained great strength in recent years. These films that revive the origins and careers of these artists usually end up being a mainly musical tribute, however, little is known about those who also had an impact on political and social movements. Now, we are about to know a key moment of the life of a historical voice of jazz and racial struggle in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, a film directed by Oscar nominee Lee Daniels that recently released its trailer. The film focuses on the moment that singer Billie Holiday first performed the song Strange Fruit in 1939 in front of a mostly white audience. Although to date the song has become an anthem against racism in the United States, at that time the performance was extremely controversial and triggered an endless...

Parts of the US are beginning to feel the brunt of last month’s holiday celebrations — at a time when hospital systems are already at their breaking point. Experts warned holiday travels and gatherings could help fuel another surge of Covid-19 infections. Yet millions of Americans traveled anyway — with more than 1.3 million people — a pandemic record — screened by the TSA on Sunday alone. That’s as hospitalizations hit another grim record Monday, with more than 128,200 Covid-19 patients, according to the COVID Tracking Project. But some states are warning the worst may be yet ahead. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said the state had “more patients with Covid in ICU beds at the end of last week than we have had at any other period throughout this pandemic.” And he expects “some very large numbers with the spread from the holiday gatherings combined with the backlog and testing...

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris recently tweeted: “Our Kwanzaa celebrations are one of my favorite childhood memories. The whole family would gather around across multiple generations and we’d tell stories and light the candles. Whether you’re celebrating this year with those you live with or over Zoom, happy Kwanzaa!” Post some pictures, Kamala! We’d love to see your Brahmin and Jamaican grandparents sitting around the Kwanzaa candles recalling celebrations way back when they were three or four years younger. (Would that the Washington Post’s “Fact Checker” would start counting Kamala’s lies!) In a Wednesday op-ed for CNN, authoritarianism expert and historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat claimed that Donald Trump Jr.’s holiday video with his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle revealed a habit of the family’s brand of politics. The columnist pointed in particular to a comment by Trump Jr. that appeared to insult his girlfriend. “I’ve managed to maintain a very low bar with Kimberly. I don’t want her to get too big an ego, or accustomed to kindness. I want to keep her tough,” he said. According to Ben-Ghiat, the comment — which she admitted could be “charitably interpreted as a joke” — revealed the “dynamics of emotional domination” that have come to define the Trump family’s politics both in public and private. The columnist noted that the president is known for putting down not just his top officials and advisers but also his supporters, who he notoriously left stranded in the cold on...

Biden was more critical of President Donald Trump’s administration for failing to vaccinate enough Americans before the end of the year. “The Trump administration’s plan to distribute vaccines is falling behind, far behind,” he claimed. He promised to ramp up vaccinations dramatically after taking office in January, demanding more funding from Congress. He congratulated...

What’s the best thing you can get your friends this holiday season? Slightly stoned, it seems. According to a rep, Kate Hudson sent bottles of her King St. Vodka to pals including Kris Jenner, Molly Sims and Elle Fanning — along with cans of tonic water that’s spiked with a microdose of cannabis. The cranberry and sage flavored “social tonic” is made by Cann, which, we’re told, is the “fastest growing THC-infused beverage to date.” Filed under gifts ,  holiday gifts ,  kate hudson ,  marijuana ,  12/28/20

The unabated surge in coronavirus cases will likely result in extended stay-at-home orders for Southern California and other areas, as intensive care beds remain in dangerously short supply. The earliest date that Southern California could have become eligible to exit the existing order was Monday, but state officials said Sunday that the region and several other areas would likely have to continue following the restrictions for several more weeks as the recent surge is pushing hospitals to the breaking point. The restrictions include reduced capacity at retail stores; the closure of some businesses including hair salons, nail salons, card rooms, museums, zoos and aquariums; and a prohibition on most gatherings, hotel stays for tourism and outdoor restaurant dining. Stay-at-home orders will remain in effect until the region’s projected ICU capacity is equal to or greater than 15%, according to state guidance. The Staples Singers. During this holiday season, many of us cannot gather together with family and friends due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Some of us will be spending time alone, missing those we’ve either lost or who are far away. Holidays have always been a family affair, and it made me think about musicians who are family; brothers and sisters, parents and cousins who have brought us so much soulful family magic over the years. This #BlackMusicSunday, join me in celebrating one of my favorite musical families: the Staples Singers and the woman who has carried their message forward: Mavis Staples. I want to also thank the family of readers and music lovers who have sustained and participated in this series since it started in April of 2020, as we move into 2021. When COVID-19 hit the Bay Area earlier this year, the staff at Brighter Beginnings transformed their organization into a sort of emergency center. Brighter Beginnings, which offers a Head Start early education program to help families prepare their young kids to be successful in school and provides basic medical services at its clinics, started providing a wider array of services as the region shut down. “We turned our offices into a mini food bank,” said Angelica Ayala, senior program manager for the Head Start programs at Brighter Beginnings. The staff worked to do safe drop-offs of food, diapers and other supplies that families needed, and they helped families file for unemployment. It was a huge challenge, Ayala explained. At a time when families need the services of the organization more than ever, the dangers of the virus make coordinating logistics harder than ever. But the staff has continued on, finding...

I wasn’t entirely wrong about the second part, but my grasp of the holiday was notional at best. So to ask a question I should have posed more than a decade ago: What is Boxing Day?  Boxing Day is part of year-round, global, tradition: the rich trying to appease the poor without parting with a meaningful share of wealth.  This much we can say: Officially, it’s a bank holiday after Christmas that’s observed in the United Kingdom and other parts of the Commonwealth, and—in normal times—a chance to watch sports, go to the pub, and shop. The quality of the CG animation is about what you’d expect from people working under insane time pressure, using software designed to be simple enough for children, guided by a non-technical and mostly absent director in the very early 2000s. In terms of graphical fidelity, it’s pretty mind-boggling to think of how far we’ve come since then, but perhaps not as mind-boggling as the decision to put this on TV in the first place. To add an extra-thick layer of absurdity to the mix, the movie’s cast was surprisingly star-studded: Thapliyal points out that the film features two Disney Princesses, Nancy Cartwright (otherwise known as Bart Simpson), MadTV star Debra Wilson, original Power Ranger Walter Emanuel Jones, and, uh, Mark Hamill. Apparently, all it took to get Luke Skywalker himself onboard was to hire a limo that would ferry him to and from recording sessions. I strongly recommend you read...
