Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has many achievements to his name. Whether it’s as a successful pro-wrestler, budding businessman, or charming actor, The Rock has done it all. Now, the former WWE Superstar has added gate-ripping to his resume. The Rock took to Instagram to address a situation which was both impressive and hilarious at the same time. He used his “superhuman” strength to rip off the gate of his house from the wall and shoved it aside. “So I did what I had to do. I pushed, pulled and ripped the gate completely off myself. Ripped it completely out of the brick wall, severed the steel hydraulics and threw it on the grass.” Now, before there are assumptions about why...

A series of leaked emails obtained by the New York Post show that the row exploded over the wording of talking points prepared for the mayor after they were sent to staffers ahead of the briefing on August 26. The briefing was to include a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution, which prohibited states and the federal government from denying citizens the right to vote based on sex. One of the talking points included in...

CV Vitolo-Haddad, currently a PhD candidate in journalism and mass communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, had been conditionally offered a tenure-track position at the Central Valley campus of the California State University, pending a background check, the university said. But after allegations surfaced that Vitolo-Haddad, who uses the gender pronoun they, had identified as Black and Latinx without belonging to either group, the university reversed course. “The University will always uphold its core values of discovery, diversity and distinction,” it said in a statement last week. “We are taking this matter seriously and acknowledge the...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A survey on the criminalization of Black young people in Allegheny County has some shocking results. One of the key findings is that black girls are ten times more likely than white girls to be referred to juvenile justice in Allegheny County. The Black Girls Equity Alliance analyzed data for the last four years and found systemic reasons Black girls are ending up in the juvenile justice system, which can then affect them for years to come, and it also provided suggestions for solutions. Part of being a teenager is making mistakes, but this study found that typical teenage behavior can follow Black girls in Allegheny County for years when minor infractions, like vaping on campus or...
Capitalism must be abolished in order for black lives to matter, Alicia Garza, a co-founder of Black Lives Matter, said at a conference in 2015. Black Lives Matter has experienced a resurgence of support in 2020 following the May 25 death of George Floyd. Celebrities and large corporations have poured millions of dollars into Black Lives Matter Global Network — BLM’s national arm — and other organizations that support defunding the police. “It’s not possible for a world to emerge where black lives matter if it’s under capitalism,” Garza said in 2015 at the left-wing convention Left Forum. “And it’s not possible to abolish capitalism without a struggle against national oppression and gender oppression,” she added. By DAVID SHARP, Associated Press PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine lawmakers can start addressing racial disparities by passing more than two dozen bills that are already awaiting action, a panel said. Those 26 bills that deserve immediate attention can begin erasing gaps in wages, health and incarceration rates, among other things, according to the first report by the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous and Maine Tribal Populations. The report, released Monday, concluded that discussions around race “have never been a central part of legislation” even though data in the report demonstrates Maine is not immune from institutional discrimination that affects American Indians and racial minorities. “For far too long, we have allowed our laws to uphold a...

“Difficult” is not a word that one should have to use in connection with their Emmy nomination. And yet, as excited as Billy Porter is feeling about his second best actor nod for FX’s Pose, that is how he described what it’s like to finally feel seen while the establishment continues to deny your colleagues the recognition they deserve. Despite Porter’s back-to-back nominations—and his victory at last year’s ceremony, which he says “actually changed my life”—the trans women who perform alongside him in FX’s groundbreaking series have been ignored. Again. Even Mj Rodriguez, who gives the show its unflappable spirit as ensemble lead Blanca—and who, as Porter puts it, “carries this show on her back, like Jesus and that cross...
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Clark County School Board has voted to rename a central Las Vegas elementary school after the district's first Black female principal. The board voted 5-1 Thursday to rescind the name of Kit Carson Elementary School, expressing concerns over Carson's role in the death of hundreds of Native Americans during the colonization of the West. Carson led the Long Walk of the Navajo in 1864, forcing Navajo people to walk from modern-day Arizona to New Mexico in the middle of winter. At least 200 Navajo people died of starvation and exposure. The board said this week that the school will be named after Helen Anderson Toland, 94, who was the principal of the elementary school in...

This was a conversation long in the making. Soon after George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, died under the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer, we wanted to bring together Black business leaders in the D.C. region to talk about what steps must take place to address racial justice and bring about real, substantive change in this business community. So, we invited seven prominent executives and entrepreneurs to a roundtable discussion moderated by Publisher Alex Orfinger and Editor-in-Chief Vandana Sinha.  But this conversation is not enough. We can’t just ask Black business leaders about what change they hope to see — a conversation many have already had ad nauseam given that their struggle long preceded the death of Floyd...

Black Americans are almost three times as likely to be vegan than white Americans. Why is this alternative diet so popular? When Louis Hunter woke up on the morning of 31 May he didn't know what to do. His hometown of Minneapolis was in disarray after a week of protests following the death of George Floyd, and many businesses - including his own restaurant, Trio Plant-Based - were shut down. "God just touched me and told me to go out and pass out all the food that I had prepared the day before," he told the BBC. In total, Mr Hunter gave away 300 vegan meals and bottles of water to Black Lives Matter protesters. The cause and his...

Make no mistake, Kamala Harris, not Joe Biden, is on the Democratic ticket as the face of the leadership the country is demanding now. Her vice presidential candidacy, in essence, is a bid to become America’s second Black president. Biden is running as the Democrats’ fix-it man, pledging to restore normalcy and decency to American politics. Harris’ role is symbolic, as veep choices usually are, but what she represents is truly substantive this time: Harris, a Black woman, embodies the most dependable constituency of the Democratic Party, a voting bloc that is finally rising in power and getting its due. Harris also clearly understands her connection to Black Lives Matter and other grassroots racial justice movements that have been pushing...
