Five of the six largest wildfires in California state history have been sparked in the past two months — and they’re all still raging. The state’s most aggressive fire, August Complex, has so far scorched nearly 860,000 acres of NorCal’s Tehama County — nearly doubling the now second-largest Mendocino Complex in 2018, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Rounding out the all-time top six are four other blazes still currently burning, according to the agency and The Sacramento Bee, which first reported the staggering toll. The SCU Lightning Complex has now consumed 396,624 acres near Santa Clara and Alameda counties, while the LNU Lightning Complex has decimated 363,220 acres around Sonoma and Napa counties. Meanwhile, the...

It’s a Tyranno-score. Next month, Christie’s is auctioning off one of the most complete and largest Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever discovered — a 40-foot-long monster named Stan. “It’s just terrifying to behold,” said Christie’s representative James Hyslop about the titanic T. rex, which roamed Earth 67 million years ago. Now, Stan is on display at the auction house’s flagship in New York City, where he’s projected to fetch between $6 million and $8 million when bidding kicks off on Oct. 6, reported CNN. The price may seem rex-pensive, but buyers would be getting a lot of fang for their buck. At about 13 feet tall with 11-inch serrated teeth, Stan is among the largest Tyrannosaurus rex specimens ever found. Paleontologists...

Several people flee the refugee camp Moria with their belongings after fires already almost completely destroyed the camp on Wednesday. Socrates Baltagiannis/picture alliance via Getty Images A second fire swept through the Greece's Moria refugee camp, destroying what was left after an earlier fire devastated the site. More than 12,000 people were living in the notoriously overcrowded camp, long seen as a symbol of Europe's failed migrant policies. Authorities blocked access to nearby towns, leaving people to sleep on roads and in fields, some reports claimed. Greece's migration and asylum minister said the fire "began with the asylum seekers" but did not elaborate, and some migrants said far-right Greeks started the fires. The 2020 Venice Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday, September 2, and while this year’s event might look quite different from previous fests — face masks, temperature checks and social distancing rules will all be strictly enforced, for starters — the fashion’s back in full force. And while many American celebs will likely choose to stay home this year due to the ongoing pandemic, we can expect plenty of stellar looks from fashion icons like Cate Blanchett (who’s serving as jury chair) and Tilda Swinton (who’s receiving a lifetime achievement award) in the week to come. Here, see...
First Lady Melania Trump stole the show on the second evening of the Republican National Convention (RNC) in the Rose Garden, speaking about her passions in public life, wearing a sharp ensemble that has become a go-to aesthetic in her wardrobe. Melania Trump delivered the speech in full Alexander McQueen with metallic brown Christian Louboutin stilettos. The look’s jutting shoulders, cinched leather-belted waist, notched lapel, and olive khaki cotton is a familiar tone for Mrs. Trump who has often chosen uniform and military-inspired fashions over the last three and half years. This particular ensemble is reminiscent of a Joseph Altuzarra skirt suit in a similar shade of olive that Mrs. Trump wore in 2017 while meeting Argentina’s leader at the White House....

The stunning meteors are leftover particles from the comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed through the inner solar system in 1992. Astrophotographers around the world are sharing their best photos of the celestial event. But, it's not too late to check out the meteor...
Beirut has endured many horrors in its 5,000-year history, but nothing like the massive explosion that ripped through the ancient Mediterranean port city on Tuesday, leaving thousands of casualties, 300,000 homeless, and over $10 billion in damage in its wake. Now the indomitable Lebanese are digging themselves out from the rumble and demanding answers from their political elites. Lebanon’s capital city confronted a scene of utter devastation Wednesday, with smoke still rising from the port. The blast tore out a crater 200 yards across that filled with seawater, as if the Mediterranean had taken a bite out of the port and swallowed buildings with it. A massive explosion rocked Beirut on Tuesday, flattening much of the city’s port, damaging buildings across the capital and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky. More than 70 people were killed and 3,000 injured, with bodies buried in the rubble, officials said. It was not clear what caused the blast, which struck with the force of a 3.5 magnitude earthquake, according to Germany’s geosciences center GFZ, and was heard and felt as far away as Cyprus more than 180 miles across the Mediterranean. Interior Minister Mohammed Fahmi told a local TV station that it appeared the blast was caused by the detonation of more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been stored in a warehouse at...

Talladega Superspeedway has hosted some pretty wild Cup Series races over the years, but this Sunday’s could be one of the craziest yet. Sean Gardner/Getty Images The Geico 500 is being held without practice or qualifying due to challenges caused by the coronavirus pandemic, so the drivers really won’t know how their cars are running until the green flag flies. Given the track’s history with “big one” crashes due to the close racing that takes place, NASCAR even decided to prohibit would-be first-time driver James Davison from competing, instead of throwing him into the deep end. Chase Elliott is the defending champ of the spring race, which is his only win at the track. So who has the most?BRAD...
